Pascual President SUBJECT Call for Nominations to the 2nd Gawad Pangulo: A Competition for Progressive Teaching and Learning Award We are pleased to announce the call for nominations to the 2nd Gawad Pangulo: A Competition for Progressive Teaching and Learning Award. The UP System competition aims to recognize faculty members who have shown outstanding accomplishments in course development and teaching. This competition will be held in two rounds. The finalists from the first round will be awarded P50,000 each to prepare teaching and learning materials that will be presented at the second round at a UP System-wide competition event. The Gawad Pangulo winners (maximum of three) will be awarded P150,000 each. The details of the competition are in the attached guidelines including the appropriate forms to be filled out by the nominees and the unit heads. These will also be available in the UP System website. The deadline for submission of nominations to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs is on 31 July 2015. Please take note of the schedule of events of the competition. We are pleased to announce the call for nominations to the 2nd Gawad Pangulo: ACompetition for Progressive Teaching and Learning Award.

The UP System competition aims to recognize faculty members who have shownoutstanding accomplishments in course development and teaching. This competition will beheld in two rounds. Gawad Pangulo: A Competition for Progressive Teaching and Learning Award

Background and RationaleAs part of its mandate under the 2008 Charter, the University of the Philippines seeks to beinnovative and become productive in all aspects of its academic life, to fulfill its mission as aNational University serving the Filipino people, and to become a globally competitiveUniversity. At the heart of the University are the faculty members who inspire and mentorthe students, instilling in them the love of learning, and infusing courses with materialsintegrated from their own creative work, research and public service.

There is a need to showcase as models the university's outstanding educators who enrichthe course content and innovate in pedagogy while continuing to uphold the fundamentalvalue and relevance of their courses. There is a need to promote progressive teaching andlearning that will sharpen the minds and excite the imagination of our students, encouragecritical thinking, hone their physical, social and mental skills, broaden their perspectives, andencourage them to make use of technology effectively and responsibly to pursue knowledgeand nurture their innovative and creative spirit.

The UPSystem Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching and Learning is a competitionwhich aims to recognize faculty who are outstanding in course development and teaching.The one-time competition will be held in two rounds. The finalists from the first round willbe awarded PSO,OOOeach to prepare materials that will be presented at the second roundat a UP System-wide competition event. The Gawad Pangulo winners (maximum of three)will be awarded P1S0,OOOeach.

Eligibility1. A regular faculty member who has been teaching for at least 2 years, a 3-unit

undergraduate majors lecture course or a 3-unit graduate lecture course in anydiscipline, that is offered at least once a year, can participate in the competition.

2. The faculty member is responsible for preparing at least one-half of the coursesyllabus and materials.

3. The faculty member teaches at least one-third of the course.

RequirementsRound 1:

1. nomination by the degree program coordinator and unit head2. certification by the co-teachers, if any, and the degree program coordinator and unit

head, that the nominee is eligible for the nomination (1-3 above)3. SET(Student Evaluation of Teachers)scoresof the nominee in the last two years4. number of students of the nominee in the course in the last 2 years5. teaching-learning philosophy and strategy of the nominee (750words)6. course description, objectives and syllabus; highlight the fundamental and new

knowledge presented in the course7. course materials; provide examplesof fundamental and updated reading materials,

including materials on one's creative work and/or research and/or public service,used in the course

8. course plan and schedule of activities; provide examples of traditional andinnovative activities; e.g., lectures (video or audio excerpts), exams, problem sets,case studies, group discussions, special projects and other assignments

9. student consultation and communication plan10. student evaluation tools and basis for grading11. information on three possible judges with expertise in the discipline or a closely

related discipline (faculty members from the following: the home unit, UPoutsidethe home unit, outside UP);

Round 2:1. one studio-quality video of the finalist's most important or core lecture in the course2. two studio-quality audios (and script/text) of lectures of the finalist with

synchronized power point slides3. one "advertisement" of the importance and relevance ofthe course to students in

relation to a degree program and to a career path4. plan for assigningfundamental and updated reading materials in the course5. plan for non-didactic activities; readings, critiques and group discussions,a plan for

laboratory-, field-, OJT-,community-based activities, relevant site visits, onlineengagement

6. plan for team-teaching the course and inviting expert guest lecturers (UPand non­UPprofessors, including foreign professors and resource persons)

7. plan for using MOOCs(massiveonline open courses)of Filipino and world experts ontopics in the course

8. other progressive, innovative course strategies and activities9. proposed revisions of SETfor the course to properly evaluate new progressive

teaching and learning10. proposed revisions of faculty teaching workload of the course that considers new

progressive teaching and learning11. 30-minute presentation by the finalist of the highlights of the requirements for

Rounds1 and 2 in a UPSystem-wide competition event, including a 10-minute livelecture on a specific topic in the course

Processand Timeline1. The deadline for submission of materials for Round 1will be on 31 July 2015. (Submit

OVPAAGawad PanguloRound 1 Form 9.1 and Annexesto OVPAA.)2. The board of judges will evaluate the entries from 01-31 August.3. The finalists will be announced on 01 September.4. The PsO,OOOaward will be given to each finalist by 15September.5. The money will be used by the finalist to prepare the requirements for Round 2, e.g.,

videos and audios prepared at the DILC(Diliman Interactive LearningCenter)*, UPOU (Open University)**, UPDFilmCenter or other studios, for travel to the studioand the Round 2 competition event.

6. The deadline for submission of materials for Round 2 will be on 31 October. (SubmitOVPAA Gawad Pangulo Round 2 Form 9.2 and Annexes to OVPAA.)

7. The Round 2 competition will be a public event held in UP Diliman in the third weekof November. Each finalist will give a thirty-minute presentation of the highlights ofthe requirements for Rounds 1 and 2, including a 10-minute live lecture on a specifictopic in the course. The final guidelines will be given to the finalist on 10 November.

8. The board of judges will announce the winners on the day of the competition andthe winners will each receive the Gawad Pangulo for Progressive Teaching andLearning of P150,OOO.The awardee is encouraged to share a portion of the awardwith co-teacher/s and others who contributed significantly to the awarded course,and the home unit.

9. The Gawad Pangulo finalists and winners will be featured in UP publications as wellas in national and international publications.

10. Materials prepared by finalists and winners will be uploaded in the websites of thehome CU (Constituent Unit) and home unit, and in the UP System website. Thesematerials are intended to become the seeds and models of progressive (pervasiveand dynamic) teaching and learning of courses that can be accessed by studentsthrough e-UP (with controlled levels of access). Other faculty members will beencouraged to use these materials as models for their own courses.

11. Gawad Pangulo awardees will be encouraged and supported to participate ininternational teaching-learning competitions.

Board of JudgesFor both rounds, the board of judges for each entry will consist of the VPAA and the twoAVPAAs, and four other judges (two faculty and two students/graduates), with at least onefaculty chosen from among the nominee's suggested faculty experts in the field, and two UPstudents or recent graduates chosen by the OVPAA, who have taken the course or a relatedcourse (and are not connected with the nominee or finalist currently and in the last 2 years).If a judge cannot be physically present at the Round 2 competition event, the OVPAA willselect another judge.
