outstanding coaching staff that infO()l8AIL I eludes several former USO players.

Offensive Coordinator Larry Caudillo is in his eighth year on the Torero staff and Kevin McGarry, this year's Defensive Coordinator, is in his fifth year on the USO football staff.

Other former Torero football players now on the coaching staff are Joe Amidon (Receiver Coach), Nils Ericson (Backfield Coach), Tom Strickland (Defensive Line Coach), Tim Call (Quarterback Coach) and Guy Ricciardulli (Linebacker Coach).

Jack Duby (Cal Western) enters his fourth year as USD's offensive l ine coach. The lone newcomer to this year's staff is Skip Wood, who will coach the kickers.

1982 USD FOOTBALL OUTLOOK

1981 was the banner year In the history of University of San Diego football with the Toreros going 9-1 and al one time ranked as high as seventh nationally at the NCAA Division Ill polls. The 1982 squad has Its work cut out for Itself.

Head Coach BIii WIiiiams, In his seventh year at the helm, Is hoping the Toreros can repeat last year's per1ormance. The offense should be on a par with last season when USO averaged 29 points per game and 381 yards total offense. Four starters return to the offensive line, Including two senior guards BIii Haley and Craig Beaver, Junior tackle John Amarillas, and Junior center Gary Holley. Returnees or some highly touted newcomers are expected to capably 1111 In the one tackle and tight end spots.

The wide receiver corps return starter Mike Rush (Junior), averaging 21.4 yards per reception last year while leading the team In touchdowns with si x. Senior BIii Vinovlch also saw a good deal of action last year and averaged 18.0 yards per reception. Sophomores Rob HIiiier and Mike Sears will also be returning to bolster the receiving crew, along with several high school and J.C. transfers.

USO's running attack loses its top three runners from last year, but sophomore Mike Corradl (4.7 yds./gama) showed flashes of brllllance and much Is expected from him by the coaching staff. Sophomore reserve lull back Rick Butler (2.8 yds.lgame) also returns and should help bolster the running game.

Senior Eric Sweet, the starter In five games at quarterback In 1981 returns attar completing 65 of 132 attempts for 1022 yards and 8 T.D.'s. His competition for that spot will come from Chris Kemple (sophomore), Greg Rolan (sophomore), and newcomer Tracy Gallagher (Imperial Valley College).

Defensively, all but one of the Toreros' entire starting llnebacklng corps returns. Senior Tracy Davis hopes to be at the outside llnebacklng position, while BIii Thomas and Don Nlklas have the Jump on the Inside llnebacklng spots. John Noonan (Inside) and Don Garcia (outside) will push the Incumbents.

Fitzhugh Dinkins returns at defensive tackle, along with reserve defensive linemen Rudy Angiano, Louis Sanchez, and Andy Allman. Junior. College transfers are being counted on to add strength to this unit In '82.

Byron Roth and Ray Stuberg are hoping to anchor the strong safety and one comerback spot In the secondary, while Greg Stein should also be pushing for a starting nod. Just how strong the secondary wlll be Is going to depend heavily on how quickly Incoming freshmen and J.C. transfers can contribute.

The USO kicking game should remain strong with the return of sophomore place kicker Robert Lozzi, one of the nation's leaders at the Division Ill level In '81. It's hoped that transfer Jay Mlllburg (Citrus JC) wlll be able to take over the punting chores.

The 1982 schedule wlll challenge the Toreros and Includes Whittler College (SCIAC 1981 Cham• plons), Azusa-Pacific (NAIA Division II power), University of Southern Calllornla's JV team, and NCAA Division II members Cal Poly Pomona and St. Mary's College (Moraga, CA).

USO FOOTBALL STADIUM

The USO Football Stadium was built in 1955, to provide students the opportunity to play intercollegiate football and other outdoor sports.

Set in a natural bowl , the Stadium has 4,000 permanent seats located behind the home side of the field. The seats are set in cement and consist of wooden bleachers, painted Torero blue.

There is a four-foot wall surrounding the playing surface that was built in 1976, in order to keep the field free from potential mud slides.

At the open end of the stadium is the scoreboard, which was generously donated by the Pepsi Bottling Company of San Diego.

Located above the stands are restrooms, a concession stand and the press box. The concession stand is run by the USO Gridiron Club, with all proceeds donated to the USO football program.

The press box, which is completely enclosed by glass, houses the official timer, statesmen, the USO coaches and members of the local and visiting media.

The University of San Diego hopes you enjoy your visit to the USO Football Stadium and that you will be back soon.
