The University of Porto is open to the world. Every year, a growing numberof students and scientists from the five continents choose the University ofPorto as their preferred teaching and research institution.Similarly, several hundred students and researchers from the University ofPorto use the unique opportunity at their disposal thanks to over 500international cooperation agreements in place at the institution in order toexperiment with a period of studies outside of Portugal.

scientific articlespublished each year.
The University of Porto dominates the portuguese scientific production, andis internationally recognised in various fields of research. Over 22% of thescientific articles produced each year in Portugal come from research unitswithin the University of Porto.Nearly half of these were classified as “Excellent” or “Very Good” by thelatest independent evaluations. In fact, the University of Porto has some ofthe most advanced and internationally renowned Portuguese R&D centres.

Partnerships between the University of Porto and industry have already resultedin several successful products on national and international markets, from thefeatherweight gas canisters to new alcohol-free beers.The innovation produced by the University of Porto has also led to the start-up of several new businesses. The institution is responsible for 31 patents,21 of which were recorded during the three-year period from 2005 to 2007.
Just in service provision, the Universityhas secured revenue of 12,2 millionEuros for 2008, 34,5% higher thanrecorded revenue from this source in2007.These figures show the focus of theUniversity in terms of providing greatereconomic value to its scientificproduction.

the city and the region.
The University of Porto has made a great deal of effort to contribute more activelyin the field of social and cultural development in the community.Every year, around 25.000 young people at secondary and primary schools attendthe science dissemination events held by the University of Porto. Initiatives suchas “Junior University” and “Science, Teaching and Innovation Show” have openedclassrooms and laboratories to a new generation of young scientists.
Furthermore, initiatives such as the “University Study Programme for Seniors” or the400 continuous training courses organised each year by the University of Porto haveopened the university’s doors to a new range of the population.The University of Porto has once again established itself as a hub for cultural creationand dissemination, with many of its facilities having joined in the artistic circuit ofthe city, with an extensive programme of exhibitions, performances and conferences,which have been freely available to the whole community.
