Being part of the Global Business cohort in Oxford is a truly international experience. In our class we have at least 17 different nationalities with a variety of expertise, lending the learning a truly global flavour. My personal experience studying in this institution is a holistic journey. It not only nourished my intellectual yearning but also proved to be character-building.

Balancing a full-time job, a family with three kids and overseas studies is no small feat. The whole process taught me time management, prioritisation, perseverance and humility.

Programme outline

Drawing on Oxford’s experience of educating leaders for 800 years, the Diploma combines the highest standards of academic rigour with a practical understanding of conducting business in a global environment. With a hands-on approach to learning, with simulations, role plays and case studies throughout, the programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to compete internationally for senior management roles.

Academic assessment

The Diploma is built on four core courses that are completed module by module within one year. Each module begins on a Wednesday and concludes on Saturday afternoon, allowing participants to combine work with study. All four modules are assessed by a mixture of examinations and assignments. Participants must pass all four modules in order to be awarded the Diploma. Participants who pass and are awarded the Diploma are offered the opportunity to receive their Diploma at a traditional Oxford University ceremony.

Module One: Global strategy7-10 March 2018

An appreciation of the global context is a pre-requisite for managing and leading at a strategic level in any sector. Despite advances in global economic integration, differences between national markets remain critically important. The objective of this first module is to provide the tools and frameworks to evaluate opportunities and risks of global expansion and to implement a global strategy. The module aims to develop participants’ ability to make strategic decisions about global expansion, and to manage operations across national borders.

This module will cover:

Module Two: Risk and reputation25-28 April 2018

Managing an international business with many intangible assets, across multiple cultures with geographic dispersion, creates a situation of high organisational risk. An awareness of the reputational risks an international business faces may begin with a better understanding of the rules of engagement with internal and external stakeholders. This module grounds such understanding in broad social sciences (economics, philosophy, psychology, political theory), and considers implications for implementing global strategies in a sustainable manner. Tools and frameworks will be provided for stakeholder analysis and engagement, in order to manage risk and reputation associated with global expansion.

This module will cover:

• Developing leadership styles to manage corporate reputation effectively

• Risk analysis and scenarios thinking• Power and influence in global companies• Stakeholder engagement and crisis

management

Module Three: Corporate diplomacy in a global context4-7 July 2018

Business leaders use corporate diplomacy to influence external players with a view to advancing their corporate interests. These players include politicians, regulators, bureaucrats, investors, analysts, lawyers, journalists, consumers and activists as well as competitors and suppliers. In order to secure a favourable outcome, business leaders may work on these stakeholders’ opinions, perceptions, and behaviour by deploying a variety of methods in global influence games. This module covers the interdisciplinary foundations of corporate diplomacy, and surveys a range of successful and failed case studies of corporate diplomacy at the host-country and international levels. Participants will develop an ability to formulate strategies for engaging with the state and NGOs to achieve business advantage.

This module will cover:

• Business relations with states and NGOs• Corporate diplomacy: business as a

political actor• Dealing effectively with the multiple

regulator problem• Measuring and mitigating political risks• Government outsourcing

Module Four: The challenges of business in emerging markets3-6 October 2018

Emerging markets are immensely challenging places to do business. The rules of the game are not always the same as in advanced capitalist economies, rules are subject to frequent change, and markets can be volatile. Often, firms must fundamentally rethink their approach to business in order to compete in these markets. One key theme of the module will focus on how the interaction of the states and markets shapes firm strategy in developing countries. Another key theme will be innovation in emerging markets. The purpose of this module is to understand both the challenges and the opportunities emerging markets create for multinational and indigenous firms. The module will offer a framework for understanding the rapidly changing business context of emerging markets and equip participants with the tools to do business in them.

This module will cover:

• The rise of state capitalism and its impact on business-government relations

• Dynamics of competition between local and foreign firms in emerging markets

• Inclusive innovation at the bottom and the middle of the pyramid

• Rise of emerging markets and the future of global economic order

Pathway to the Oxford Executive MBA

The Diploma can be the beginning of a longer relationship with Oxford. Some Diploma participants may already hold an MBA; others may be seeking to broaden their knowledge through this general management qualification. For those considering further study there is a proven pathway from the Diplomas to the prestigious Oxford Executive MBA programme. Successful applicants to the EMBA receive a reduction in fees, equivalent to 60% of the value of their Diploma course fee. There is also an option to take exemptions from the Diploma onto the EMBA. Selected facultyOur research produces cutting-edge knowledge and changes the way leaders think and act.

Marc Szepan, Academic Director Marc Szepan is a Lecturer in International Business. His areas of expertise include the aviation industry, strategic management of multi-national enterprises, and business in China. Marc is a scholar-practitioner who brings extensive experience in running global aviation businesses to his research and teaching. His most recent academic research has examined China’s aviation industry, cross-border M&A, post-acquisition integration, and knowledge transfer management. Marc’s primary professional experience has been in leading technical aviation service businesses in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. In 2012, Marc was recognised as one of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s “40 Under Forty: Rising Stars of Aerospace and Aviation”.

Eric Thun, International Business Dr Thun is Peter Moores Lecturer in Chinese Business Studies and lectures on the School’s Executive MBA programme. A political scientist by training, Eric’s research focuses on issues of industrial development in China. Recently, he has investigated the development of the Chinese automotive industry, the globalisation strategies of Chinese firms, and China’s integration into global production networks.

Gerard D Drenth, Scenarios Planning Gerard is an Associate Fellow and Senior Partner and MD at NormannPartners, a strategy consultancy. He has lectured on scenario planning at other institutions, including ICL, LBS, and Cambridge University. He previously worked as Vice President in the European Strategy Group for Morgan Stanley, and for Shell in the scenario planning team. Gerard holds an EMBA degree from London Business School and a MSc degree in Computer Science with Operational Research from the VU University Amsterdam.

Hiram Samel, International Business Hiram Samel is an Associate Professor of International Business and a Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford. His research draws on multiple disciplines including comparative political economy, technology strategy, the economics of innovation and labor studies. His work appears in Regulation & Governance, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Mechanical Engineering and he has co-authored a book on ethical consumption, Looking Behind the Label: Global Industries and the Conscientious Consumer. He brings extensive management experience to his research, having been an entrepreneur for 25 years before receiving his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2013.

Marc Stears, Ethics, Organisation and Leadership Marc Stears is Chief Executive of the New Economics Foundation. Previously he was a Fellow in Politics at University College, Oxford. His interests are in political philosophy, leadership, organisational change, public-private partnership, social responsibility, and corporate reputation. He has worked with senior leaders in a number of major corporations, including BP, GlaxoSmithKline, and Shell.

Paul M Vaaler, International Business Paul Vaaler is a Visiting Fellow and the former Sanjaya Lall Visiting Professor of Business and Development. He is also the Mooty Chair in Law & Business at the University of Minnesota’s Law School and Carlson School of Management. His interests are in the management of risk and investment in developing countries. He has worked as a lawyer and consultant to MNEs, governments and the World Bank.

Andrew Spicer, Business and Politics in Russia Dr Andrew Spicer is an Associate Professor of International Business in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina and Associate Fellow at Oxford Saïd. His focus is on the intersection of business and society in a global economy. His research has examined privatisation policies and outcomes in Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, and the role of Western ideas and international organisations in shaping market reform policies in transition economies.

Simon Evenett, Corporate Diplomacy Simon Evenett is Professor of International Trade and Economic Development at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland and Programme Director of the International Trade and Regional Economics Programme of the Centre of Economic Policy Research. He is an expert in the commercial policy and strategies of the USA, EU, and the rising economic powers, such as China. He was Director of Economic Research at the World Trade Institute, and has twice served as a World Bank official.

Mari Sako, International BusinessMari Sako is Professor of Management Studies for Saïd Business School. An expert on global strategy, her research focuses on the connections between global corporate strategy, comparative business systems, and human resource management. She teaches about globalisation and global strategy on the MBA, the MSc in Major Programme Management, and executive programmes for professional services firms.

How to Apply

The Oxford Diploma in Global Business is designed for experienced executives who aspire to, or already hold, strategic management positions. In order to be considered for the programme candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

Professional experience: Candidates should have at least five years’ professional experience and be familiar with the challenges of international business.

Intellectual ability: A good undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification is required. Applicants who do not hold such qualifications may be considered if they have a very strong employment history, demonstrating their ability as a high achiever.

English language proficiency: The programme is taught in English. An English test score of IELTS 7.5, TOEFL iBT 110, or TOEFL 630 is required if English is not your native language, although a previous degree or work experience in English may be sufficient. Application process and deadlines

Applications are submitted online. You will need an up-to-date CV, degree transcripts, two short essays and two references. Admissions are processed through a system of review before a final decision is reached. Each application is considered individually and a waiting list will operate once the programme is full.

Fees

2018 programme fees are £23,500, covering tuition, course materials, essential reading texts, examinations, assessments and supervision.

Scholarships for women

Oxford Saïd is committed to increasing the economic participation and influence of women in both developing and developed countries. As a result, there are three scholarships on this programme for outstanding female candidates: one for 50% of tuition fees and two for £5,000 fee reductions.
