Student Success

In 2002-2003 one hundred and sixty-eight studentsparticipated in the College Cornerstone Program,designed to provide foundational skills in math,English, reading, science, and academic skills toacademically underprepared students.

Twenty-one high school graduates participated in theUNM-LA 2002 Summer Bridge program. Schools partici-pating in the program include Cuba, Cibola, Española,Rio Rancho, Robertson, Santa Fe and Victory Faith HighSchools. Subsequently, eighteen of those participantsenrolled in post-secondary schools in Fall 2002.

Thirty-nine students received AA/AAS degrees and/orCertificates in 2002-2003. Twelve of those studentsearned a Certificate through the Electro-MechanicalTechnology Student Training Program, which is co-sponsored with the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

�Sixty-three individuals received GEDs during 2002-2003.Of those, thirty-seven enrolled in post-secondary programs at UNM-LA.

UNM-LA accommodated seventy-seven students in itsstudent housing (efficiency apartments).

The UNM-LA chapter of Phi Theta Kappa InternationalHonor Society was the recipient of all awards given atthe 2003 Phi Theta Kappa regional awards ceremony.

In 2002-2003 over four hundred students participatedin the UNM Extended University program at UNM-LAthat offers live classroom, on-line and instructional TVcourses at the upper division and graduate level inmany subject areas and disciplines, includingUniversity Studies, Engineering, Education, Nursing, and Public Administration.

Community Impact

The economic impact of UNM-LA on Los Alamos Countyis approximately $6.5 million annually. The return perdollar of locally paid property tax is $19.98.*

The economic impact of UNM-LA on the tri-county areais approximately $13.8 million each year.* UNM-LA has 159 full-time and part-time employees with 97% living in the tri-county area (Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Rio Arriba).

UNM-LA collaboratively hosts community events featuring local and international speakers, musiciansand films such as the following:

� Jim Sagel Memorial Lecture Series� Piano Fund Music Concert Series � Art Exhibits� Monthly movies co-sponsored with

the Los Alamos Film Society

Job Fairs

In 2002-2003 UNM-LA hosted two regional Job Fairs.The August 2002 fair featured 29 businesses and wasattended by 284 participants with over 400 individualsaccessing the website for the job fair and submittingtheir applications for consideration. The March 2003 fair featured 27 businesses as well as representativesfrom higher education institutions with over 350 participants attending.

Community Services

Two hundred and forty people participated in variouscommunity service offerings at UNM-LA, including theParenting Seminar, Real Estate Training, CDA Preparationcourses and a Project Management series.

Children’s College

Each year over three hundred children in grades firstthrough sixth from throughout Northern New Mexicoparticipate in the unique Children’s College programthat features hands-on discovery activities in learningscience, engineering, math as well as other currentissues designed to expose children to science in a positive way.

Scholarships/Fundraising

UNM-LA offers twelve merit-based and two need-basedscholarships raining from $500 to $3500 per year. 2002-2003 fundraising events brought in over $77,000for the UNM-LA endowment and scholarship funds.

In 2002-2003 UNM-LA received $44,946 for studentscholarships from the NM state lottery.
