During the years 1999-2005 I doubled the number of plexus blocks performed at Rochester by attracting four new hand surgeons to the Lattimore Community Surgicenter and Linden Oaks Surgery Center. This provided additional regional anesthesia training for residents and fellows. I also began a new initiative to convert all peripheral nerve blocks done in our department to a technique using ultrasound guidance. This program was funded by Friends of Strong, the Department of Anesthesiology and Linden Oaks Surgery Center. When this initiative was completed, we had one of few sites in North America with faculty and hardware to provide this modern service to all of our patients. Teaching: Director of Summer Anesthesia Clerkship for first year medical students (women and minorities) (2000- 2005) including operating room anesthesia, critical care, pain management, labor analgesia, clinical and basic research. Pain Fellowship Director (2001-2002), Senior Design Course in Biomedical Engineering (2000 -2005). During this time I served as the faculty advisor to develop a smart sponge which can be found anywhere in the body non-invasively, a portable carbon dioxide monitor, A transvenous Doppler catheter to scan for air emboli is craniotomy surgery and a transdermal zileuton patch for children. I developed the permanent cadaver museum using the van Hagens plastination technique creating specimens of the brachial plexus, lumbar plexus, sciatic plexus and airway. Taught the two day cadaver workshop on regional anesthesia and interventional pain management for fellows and residents, I was the FAER foundation mentor for David Grimes (resident) in medical illustration.
