INTRODUCTION
Fifty years of achievement have seen the University of Bath grow into a globally recognised institution with over 17,000
students from 130 countries. We believe in offering our students a well-rounded education, ready for their next steps in
the world: high quality teaching from research-led academics, extra-curricular activities such as our award-winning
sports facilities; the opportunity to undertake a placement is an integral part of our undergraduate offering; a
substantial and growing range of options for post-graduate study. The result: a very engaged, high-quality student body
with strong values and good levels of student satisfaction.
The purpose of a University is to transform the life of its students; at the same time we are a touchstone for the
acquisition and dissemination of knowledge, to further humanity’s understanding of the world and beyond. Our
academics collaborate across traditional and emerging subject areas so that our research has practical applications with
social and economic benefit. We continue to invest in new facilities and people to grow the impact of our research. We
make a positive contribution to our community and the vigour of our local economy, accounting for around £300M to
Bath & NE Somerset’s GDP. We work closely with globally-recognized as well as small and specialized industrial partners
and our Innovation Centre grows new businesses.
We are a vibrant, close-knit, intellectual, cultural, sporting and social community who are proud of what we do and who
we are, committed to using our skills and expertise to discover and solve real-world problems. From the beginning, the
University was designed to be different, innovative and inclusive. Our compact campus provides a sense of community
which underpins our commitment to collegiality. Our staff and students have strong links with the World Heritage City
of Bath, reinforcing the importance of our positive contribution to the local community and society. A lively,
international and impactful alumni community helps us reach out into the world. Linking with partners who are both
national and international; industrial and social, this is a place where science, engineering and social sciences come
together to benefit of the wider global society.
Now we are looking for a new Vice-Chancellor and President to help us meet our aspiration to play an even greater and
more influential global role. With strong values of excellence in higher education, public service, integrity and
commitment to developing people from all backgrounds, our new Vice-Chancellor will build on our achievements to
lead, shape and nurture a vibrant, diverse community to new levels of success.

STRATEGY
Our 2016-2021 strategy sets out how we will build on our rich heritage of invention, enterprise and international
engagement to:
extend our research power by recruiting dynamic researchers, nurturing their talent and fuelling their
ambition;
affirm our international influence through worldwide partnerships which offer creative responses to research
and educational opportunities;
become an international leader in graduate education, attracting increasing numbers of postgraduates by
enhancing our existing prestige portfolio with innovative and global modes of delivery;
enrich the postgraduate and undergraduate experience by engaging purposefully with our staff, student,
employer, partner and alumni communities; and
expand our capacity and capability by investing in new infrastructure, facilities and technologies.
Our research strategy and education strategy outline how we will harness the resources of the University and our
partners. When we invest in new capabilities, they will be a combination of people, infrastructure, services and
systems. To deliver the University strategy we have already invested in new postgraduate programmes and are
embarking upon innovative ways of delivery to make education available to a broader community. We have a sound
financial base, and good partnerships, allowing us to make investments which provide that unique combination of
education and research which enriches the learning environment.

GLOBAL COMMUNITY
An international outlook is now firmly embedded across the University’s activities and is having a significant impact on
our research collaborations, and our staff and student mobility. As an endorsement of the progress we have made in
this area over recent years, in January Bath was included in an elite list of the world’s ‘most international universities’
compiled by The Times Higher Education. Both our international reach and reputation are growing as a result of a
number of important initiatives. We funded 363 students on study abroad or work placements thanks to increased
ERASMUS + funding in 2015/16. We developed new mobility partnerships in Chile, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa,
Mexico and Uzbekistan thanks to two successful bids for ERASMUS + International Credit Mobility funding. We
welcomed over 1,250 new international students, including over 850 postgraduate taught students (a 22.5% increase
on the previous year) from more than 100 countries around the world.
CORPORATE ENGAGEMENT
The university continues to be at the forefront of engagement with industry and other external partners, structuring
projects that integrate fundamental discovery with a systems approach to issues that affect society as a whole. A recent
example is the five year research agreement for the Hinkley C supply chain. This latest milestone in our partnership
with EDF Energy connects business leaders, policy makers and academics to improve the management of supply chains
within complex megaprojects; reducing cost, saving time and benefiting the local economy. Other engagements
include: the Institute of Mathematical Innovation works with industry in a variety of sectors analysing big data, and
modelling complex phenomena; Productivity through People is a leadership development programme, delivered in
partnership with large industrials such as Rolls-Royce for small and medium businesses in the SouthWest; Healthy
Housing for the Displaced, working with international architects and academics in Jordan and Turkey, aims to transform
the lives of refugees living in extreme conditions. Engaging in partnership to tackle real world issues is a hallmark of our
approach at the University of Bath.
