Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin is …

one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Europe and among the largest in the field of social work.

an institution with an extraordinary history. closely linked to the woman from whom it takes its

name.



Alice Salomon and our university of applied sciences

In 1908, Alice Salomon founded “Soziale Frauenschule” (Social School for Women) – the first school for social work.

She was a liberal social reformer in the German women’s movement.

Alice Salomon smoothed the way for the establishment of social work as an academic discipline.



Alice Salomon and our university of applied sciences

Alice Salomon was one of the first women to hold a doctoral degree.

The Prussian state awarded her its highest distinction in 1932.

As the daughter of Jewish parents, she was dismissed from all of her posts in 1933 and, in 1939, was forced into exile.

She died in New York in 1948. The university of applied sciences has born her

name since 1992.
