TheUniversityofAgder(UiA)issituatedonthesoutherntipofNorwayandhaslocationsontwocampuses,KristiansandandGrimstad.Theuniversityhasapproximately9000studentsand1000academicandadministrativestaffmembers.ItisthemostrecentlyestablisheduniversityinNorway,butitshistorygoesbackto1839.

Theuniversityownssharesinatechnologicalresearchinstitute,Teknova,andAgderResearch,aninterdisciplinarysocialscienceresearchinstitute.Researchersfromtheuniversityanditspartnerinstitutesareinvolvedinawiderangeofresearchprojectsinregionalandurbanmanagementanddevelopment,inkindergartensandschools,inthemunicipalhealthcaresystemandinjointprojectswithresearchersfromtheregionalhospital.

TheregionofAgderhasleadingcompaniesinworldnichemarkets.Therearethreemajorsectorsallexhibitingasignificant

degreeoflocalclustering:oilandgas,materialproductionandmetalprocessing,andinformationandcommunicationtechnologies.Thereisanemergingindustrialclusterinrenewableenergyfocusedonoffshorewindandphotovoltaicenergy.StudentsonalllevelsfrequentlytakepartinR&Dprojectswiththeseindustries.

TheuniversityhasfulfilledtherequirementsoftheBolognaProcessbyadoptingtheBolognadegreestructure,implementingtheEuropeanCreditTransferandAccumulationSystem(ECTS),increasinginternationalisation,andestablishingacomprehensivequalityassurancesystem.

UiAistheonlyhighereducationinstitutioninNorwaytohavebeenawardedboththeECTSandDSlabelsbytheEuropeanCommission.TheECTSlabelisawardedtoEuropeanuniversitiesanduniversitycollegeswhichorganisetheirstudentexchangesinaccordancewithasetofqualityassuredrequirementsandhavepresentedtheircompletecoursecataloguesinEnglish.TheDSlabelis

earnedbyinstitutionswhichissueaDiplomaSupplementtoallgraduatesbasedonasetofformalrequirementsandasetmodeldevelopedbytheEuropeanCommission,CouncilofEuropeandUNESCo/CEPES.

Internationalisationisreflectedinstudentlifeoncampus,inmeetingswithinternationalstudentsandprofessors,andasanintegratedtopicinseveralcourses.

InternationalisationisafocusareaatUiA.Inadditiontoresearchcollaborationtheuniversitycooperateswithover175partnerinstitutionsthroughstudent,facultyandstaffexchange.

the faculty is organised into three departments:

>DepartmentofPublicHealth,SportandNutrition>DepartmentofHealthandNursingScience>DepartmentofPsychosocialHealthThefacultyoffersstudiesinnursing,socialeducation,sport,physicaleducation,outdooractivities,publichealth,nutrition,foodandculture(domesticscience),communitymentalhealth,healthscienceandhealthinformatics.Mostprogrammesatthefacultyofferinternationalstudentexchange.AtpresentthefacultyhasexchangeagreementsthroughoutScandinaviaandEurope,aswellasAustralia,NewZealandandseveralAfricancountries.Throughteaching,researchanddisseminationthefacultyaimstopromoteknowledgeinitsareasofexpertise.Candidateseducatedatthefacultyworkashealthpersonnelandteachers,aswellasinotherpositionsinthepublicsector.Publichealthandhealthcare-relatedtechnologiesareimportant,strategicfocusareasforthefaculty.Thefacultycooperatescloselywithvarioussportsorganisations,theschoolsectorandhealthandsocialservicesintheAgderregion.

Severaloftheprogrammesinvolvedifferentformsofpracticalplacements,varyingfromshortobservationalpractice,practicalcoursesandlaboratorypractice,tosupervisedclinicalplacementsinvariousareasofthepublichealthsystem.Thefacultyalsooffersstudyprogrammesoffcampus.Thishasgiventhefacultyexcitingchallengesindevelopingarangeofpart-timeanddecentralisedprogrammes.

ThefacultyoffersstudiesinNordiclanguageandliterature,English,French,German,Spanish,education,religion,history,translation,media,andphilosophy.Throughthesestudies,thefacultypromotestheunderstandingofhumansandsocietyinthepastandinthepresent,andstrengthensthestudents’abilitytoreflectuponthemselvesandcontributetocriticalandvalue-orientedthoughtandaction.

Throughstudiesofdisseminationandeducationalprocessesofthepastandpresent,thefacultyalsoaimstoincreaseinsightandpracticalskillsinknowledgedevelopment.Thefacultyemphasizesinternationalcooperationthroughstudentexchange,internationalisationathome,teachingNorwegianabroadandmulti-culturalcurriculumdevelopment.

Thefacultyisresponsibleforeducationandresearchinthefieldsofdrama,musicandartsandcrafts.PerformanceprogrammesinwesternclassicalmusicandAfrican-Americanmusicareacorepartofthefaculty´sactivity.otherstudyofferingsincludebachelor’sprogrammesinmusiceducation,dramaeducation,artsandcraftsandmusic.Shorterprogrammesandcoursesarealsoofferedaselectivesubjectsintheuniversity’steachereducationprogrammes.

Theprogrammesonofferqualifystudentstoworkinnurseryschools,kindergartens,schools,cultureschools,communityculturalservicesortheperformingarts,invariouscapacities.Inadditiontoprovidingeducation,theFacultyofFineArtsstressestheimportanceofcreativeartisticwork.InternationalcooperationprojectsincludeNoRAD-supportedprogrammesinTanzaniaandNepal,andPeaceCorpsexchangesinNepal,PalestineandZanzibar.

Withhundredsofyearsofexperienceininternationaltradeandshipping,Agderhasasolidtrackrecordofbeingoneofthemostinternationally-orientedpartsofNorway.StillastrongholdforNorwegianexportersandship-owners,Agderhasalsoturneditsinternationalattentionelsewhere.Fromtheinternationalisationoftheuniversity,toinvestmentintelecomtechnology,renewableenergyandthedevelopmentofalargepetroleumtechnologycluster,Agderisadaptingtoaglobalisedworld.

Thelocalcommunitiesalsostrivetocatertoaninternationalworkforce,notablythroughthecreationofinternationalschoolsinbothArendalandKristiansand.Sørlandet isatopholiday

resortforNorwegians,andalsowelcomesmanytouristseveryyear.

Whilehundredsofthousandsofnativesareenticedbythebeautifulcoastline,withsmallislandsandsummersunshine,foreigntouristshavediscoveredotherpartsofAgder.TheuniquelowlandwoodedhillscoveringmostofinlandAgderdrawhugenumbersofforeignhikers,trekkersandcampers.Although,arguably,atitspeakofbeautyinsummer,Agderiswellsituatedforwintertourismaswell.High-standardskiresortsandcross-countryfacilitiescanbefoundnearby,andduringwintertimesnowcanalmostalwaysbefoundjustashortdrivefromcampus.

Small,whitewoodenhouses,narrowcobbledstreets,tinycafesandbakeriesarescatteredaroundthecentreofidyllicGrimstad.

Askanyoneofthe20,000nativesinGrimstadtoboastabouttheirtown,andtheywillprobablytellyouaboutthebeautifulcoastlinecoveredwithislands,skerriesandsmalltuckedawaybeaches.ThenthenativesusuallygoontoproudlydeclareGrimstad’srecordofmostsunnydaysinNorway.TheymightevenadheretothetowncouncilmarketingstrategyandcallGrimstadthe‘townofpoets’.

Today,however,fewpoetsoccupythesmall,whitewoodenhouses,butGrimstadhasaproudhistory.Atitanof19thcenturytheatre,HenrikIbsenstartedwritingplayswhileanapprenticeinGrimstad.KnutHamsunresidedinGrimstadforthebetterpartofhislife,maintainingthebeautifulfarm‘Nørholmen’.Grimstad,onlyhalfanhour´sdrivefromKristiansand,is

traditionallyamaritimetown,hometosomeofthemostsuccessfulship-ownersinNorway.

Inadditiontotheshippingindustry,Grimstadisacentreforoffshoreandtelecommunicationstechnology.TelecomgiantsTelenorandEricssonhavebothinvestedheavilyinGrimstad,andcooperatewiththeUniversityofAgder.

Recently,GrimstadhasexperiencedarevivalofitsculturalpastwiththeEnjoymentFestival,theNorwegianShortFilmFestival,andthemicrobreweryNøgneØwinningtheWorldBeerChampionship.Grimstadalsoboaststhebeautifulopen-airtheatreFjæreheiaandthenewcampusoftheUniversityofAgder.

Kristiansandisalsoknownforitsculturallife.Anewculturehouseisbeingbuilt,andthetownhostsseveralfestivals.PerformancesbytheKristiansandSymphonyorchestraandregionaltheatreareverypopular.Thecinemahostsavarietyoffestivalsthroughouttheyear.

FlourishingbusinessesaroundKristiansandattractengineersandprofessionalsfromaroundtheworld.Someofthelargestcompaniesareenergy-based,supplyingtheoilandgasindustry,globalmetalmarketsortheemergingenergysector,forexample,thesolarpowerindustry.

TheKristiansandcampusopenedin2001,andhasasleek,contemporarydesign.Thestate-of-the-artGrimstadcampus(openedin2010)isthenewestandoneofthemostinnovativecampusesinNorway.Classroomandauditoriumfacilitiesonthecampusesaredesignedforusebylargeandsmallgroupsofstudents,resultinginaversatileenvironmentandintimatestudyatmosphere.

Thecomputerlabsofferup-to-date,andoftenevenstate-of-the-art,equipment.Thelibraryhasanextensivecollectionofbooks,includesawideselectionofdigitalinformationresources,andislinkedtoa

nationalandinternationallibrarynetwork.

Bothcampuseshaveattractiveday-carecentresforthechildrenofstudentsanduniversitystaff.Thecafeteriaisrankedasthemostpopularstudentcafeteriainthenation.Studenthousingisofhighqualityandmanyofthebuildingsareonorclosetothecampuses.

TheStudentAssociationofAgder(SiA)alsorunsbookshops,pubsandtrainingstudios.Bothcampusesarewithinwalkingdistanceofthecitycentres,yetclosetorecreationalareassuchasparks,beachesandforestsforclimbing,biking,hikingandotheractivities.
