HistoryMansfield Universit y dates to 1857 when the Mansfield Classical Seminary opened with 105 students.
In 1862 the institution was designated a State Normal School for the training of teachers. Enrollment had grown to 400 by 1905. In 1927, Mansfield became the first school in Pennsylvania to be designated a State Teachers College, authorized by the State Board of Education to grant bachelor of science degrees in elementary and secondary education, music, and home economics. In 1960, the school became Mansfield State College, a multi-purpose institution offering a broad range of curricula. On July 1, 1983, Mansfield Universit y came into being as a unit of the State System of Higher Education. Today, 70 undergraduate programs, seven master's degree programs, and five associate degree programs are offered to over 3,275 students.

Honors Program
The Honors Program at Mansfield University is a 24-credit, multi-disciplinary academic program featuring innovative course work, challenging subjects, and opportunities for cultural enrichment in the liberal arts. This program is designed for students with a strong record of academic achievement and a desire for new learning experiences. It is open to undergraduates of all majors and designed to provide an intellectually stimulating experience for outstanding students. The Honors Program enables students to explore subjects that interest them in greater depth than may be possible in traditional courses, and it also allows students to apply their knowledge across academic fields. It is the goal of the Honors Program to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to achieve their full potential during their academic career at Mansfield University.
Honors students must maintain a 3.00 Q.P.A. in both their honors courses and their overall grade point average as well as make continual progress in completing the honors sequence of eight courses. The following individuals have successfully completed the Honors Program this year:

*The Processional and RecessionalThe processional and recessional are traditional parts of the Commencement ceremony that symbolize the
relationship between faculty and students. In the processional, students process through the ranks of the faculty, giving faculty the opportunity to show their respect and congratulations to their students.
Please take your seat by 10:45 a.m. and remain seated throughout the processional, ceremony, and recessional, leaving all aisles clear. You are invited to meet your graduate near the entrance to the gymnasium once the recessional is completed.
Mansfield University faculty and staff members may present the diploma case to their graduating children or spouses.

Academic AttireThe traditional attire worn at Commencement exercises indicate the academic achievement
of the individuals taking part in the ceremony. Its use, which originated at English and European universities during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of Kings College (now Columbia University).
In 1895 the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, met at Columbia to draft a code to regulate the design of gowns and hoods for various degrees and to fix the colors indicating the various academic disciplines. This code has been adopted by most colleges and universities in the United States. It was revised in 1932 and again in 1959.
Gowns: The color as well as cut of the gowns varies. Although most doctoral gowns are black, some are the color of the university conferring the degree. The doctoral gown is trimmed in velvet with three two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front. Although usually black, the velvet may be of a color indicating the nature of the degree. Masters’ and Bachelors’ gowns have no such trim.
The level of degree held is indicated by the cut of the gown. Doctoral gowns have full sleeves which are round and open. Gowns worn by Bachelors have long pointed sleeves and those worn by Masters have long, closed fuller sleeves, which reach nearly to the wearer’s knees. The arm goes through a slit giving the appearance of short sleeves.
Hoods: The hood seems to have had a more practical origin. During the Middle Ages monks wore hoods to protect their tonsured heads in the winter and as a container to collect alms. It is the most significant part of academic attire. Its shape and size indicate the degree of the wearer. The color of the velvet border indicates the academic field. The lining represents the colors of the institution granting the degree. The Bachelor’s hood is three feet long and has a two-inch velvet border; the Master’s hood is three and one-half feet long and has a three inch border; and the Doctor’s hood is four feet with a five inch border. The Mansfield University hood is lined with red and black stripes.
TradiTional Colors: Representative colors that one often sees are:Black ......................................................................Associates Pink ................................................................................ Social Science, Social Work Light blue ................................................................EducationWhite .........................................................Arts and Letters Apricot ........................................................................ MorTarboards: The mortarboard cap evolved from the skull cap worn by monks of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It is usually black. Tassels are worn over the left front quarter by degree holders; candidates wear the tassel over the right front quarter.
THe PresidenTial Medallion: In the early 1980’s, a Mansfield State College Commencement Committee enlisted the expertise of two faculty members to design a presidential medallion and neckpiece in honor of the institution’s designation effective July 1, 1983 as Mansfield University. Mr. Thomas H. Loomis, a faculty member in the Art Department, designed and fashioned the metal portion of the medallion using the Pennsylvania State seal as a base. Mrs. Mary Lee Trowbridge, a faculty member in the Home Economics Department, designed the neckpiece in red velvet with black stitching. The gold color base of the medallion, together with the neckpiece highlighting the institutional colors of red and black, symbolize the proud traditions of the university.
