FLEXIBLE LEARNING Our Higher-level Professional Quali�cations are designed to be �exible to study with online blended learning integrated.

ACADEMIC SKILLS We will provide academic skills coaching that can support the continuation and attainment of

all students which can be easily accessed. We will run small group workshops and 1-1 support for all students to meet individual needs.

The Higher Education Student Association is run by students, for students, allowing them the chance to raise issues and have a voice. The group also run charity and social events throughout the year.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGYThe Institute of Technology is part of a government initiative for the College to work alongside local employers to understand what the skills needs are and then look at how the curriculum can be tailored to meet those needs. Through the Institute of Technology, employers will have the opportunity to support the content of courses and help ensure that students’ skills are up-to-date and relevant for the work place.

The Institute of Technology brought an investment of circa £10 million of capital funding into the region. York College has invested a proportion of this into industry-standard equipment to support the delivery of higher-level technical training. This massive training boost will enhance employment opportunities and ensure highly quali�ed individuals for the region’s employers.

WORKING WITH LOCAL EMPLOYERSThe bid has received signi�cant levels of employer support. Digital and engineering businesses ViSR, CATCH, Skipton Building Society, GB Recruitment and ENGIE Fabricom recognised the need for investment in education to address their wider skills shortages and have signed up as employer partners to be involved in designing the appropriate curriculum, supported by research from the local

universities. These employers are part of the governance of the Institute of Technology to ensure continued collaboration and long term bene�ts for the region.

WHY STUDY AT AN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY?The Institute of Technology courses at York College provide an alternative to studying a traditional degree for those that want to develop their skills and gain higher-level quali�cations in the areas of Digital, Engineering, Manufacturing or Construction but don’t necessarily want to spend three years doing a full degree. Through a collaborative partnership with local employers, York College will o�er programmes to deliver higher-level technical skills on a par with more academic routes and will achieve the same level of prestige as universities.

We’re proud at York College University Centre to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students. Returning to higher education is a decision many make, however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions. Navigating student finance, how to manage your work life and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions.

We want our mature students to not only succeed in their studies but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with mature students in mind.

• Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various work life commitments our students have, be they work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.

• Closer tutor contact; you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career.

• Employment focus; our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post study employability. We realise many mature students seek out higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies.

We understand that it isn’t always possible to solely take time out to study, often our students have to juggle other commitments such as work or family. Recognising this, we have designed a number of our courses to work alongside you and your life.

Jessica Teasdale Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction and the Built Environment

Coming from Scarborough, Jessica chose York College University Centre due to the transport routes coupled with the flexibility offered.

With working and having a family, this flexibility helped Jessica manage her time so she could commit to both her studies and other life commitments. Taught by industry-led tutors, elements of the course were made applicable to Jessica’s work, this helped ensure that her studies complemented and supported her job and career goals in the construction industry.

Jessica now takes a promotion at work which was supported by her HNC and is training to be a Site Manager.

WE’RE HERE AT THE BEGINNING With specialist teams that each offer impartial information, advice and guidance on a full range of services including course information, how to enrol, finance and funding, travel and transport and career advice through E Guidance.

YOUR HEALTH AND WELLBEINGLook after you. Your health and wellbeing is our number one priority. We offer termly health and

wellbeing events. If you are experiencing any problems, feeling under pressure or finding it hard to cope, we have a free and confidential counselling service that you can access. We also have a team of Mental Health First Aiders on-hand throughout the working day.

MONEY MATTERS Before, during and after your course the Funding Team is here for you. They will investigate funding options available to help with anything from tuition fee loans and childcare grants to travel costs.

We’re here to help BURSARYWe’re committed to providing a Bursary Scheme which all eligible higher education students starting their course in September 2021 can apply to. If you are successful, you will receive a payment of £600 paid in up to two instalments. You could use your bursary to help pay for travel costs or buy essential equipment for your course.

SUPPORT FOR DISABILITIESIf you have a disability, specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) or a long-term physical or mental health condition, and are applying for a higher education programme, you can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance to help with the extra costs you may have. We will also make sure that you have the reasonable adjustments and support in place if you need it to engage fully with your studies.

FAITH AND SPIRITUALITYWe welcome those of all faiths and none. There are two designated spaces for personal reflection and a prayer room that students can access at any time when on campus.

LIVING IN YORK When most students think of student accommodation they think of halls of residence or living in a shared student house. At York College we do things a little differently. Prior to starting your higher education course with us, you ideally should have your living arrangements in place. APPRENTICESHIPSOur higher apprenticeships are built through partnerships with local and regional employers. We work with the employer to ensure you receive the highest quality industry experience.

working with employersWork-related learning is a key part of all our higher education courses. Our academic staff work hard to build strong links with practitioners to ensure that your knowledge and technical abilities are of those that match industry requirements. Most of our staff themselves are industry experienced and will be able to provide you with invaluable advice and guidance.

Some of our courses have dedicated modules specifically aimed at supporting students to

become self-employed, as that is a need of the sector, and many programmes embed various work-related learning activities to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge required for future employment.

The Student Association have spoken highly about the support they get with employability, particularly visits from past students who are now either employed or self-employed.

01. REAL-WORLD ASSIGNMENTSConstruction students had a visit from David Kempley (Chartered Land Surveyor) who briefed a Surveying and Setting Out assignment. David then supported the students with technical support and assisted on the assessment.

02.3D Design & Creative Practice students worked on a live project for York’s Great Ghost Search alongside Snowhome and Visit York, to attract visitors to the city during Halloween half-term. They helped create and customise miniature and ceramic ghosts that were then hidden across the city. LIVE PROJECTS

WORK EXPERIENCEMedia Make-up students have previously secured work experience with Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York Light Opera Company, University of York Media students: Independent films, York Photography Network Group, Mammoth Films, Backstage Makeovers, Dreamtime Creative and York Stage Company.

04. GUEST LECTURERSGraphic & Communication Design students welcomed in London based branding and creative design agency DixonBaxi. DixonBaxi came in to give a talk to the students about projects, the creative industries and their ethos as designers.

06.Fashion students visited Premier Vision in Paris. This is an international trade fair attracting professionals from across the globe, who receive key information on fashion trends 18 months before the season begins. Students networked with fabric suppliers from across the world and listened to seminars on the key moods that will drive the next season from some leading figures within the industry. Students stayed in the famous Montmatre ‘Fabric District’ of Paris and bought fabrics for Final Major Project collections.

HNC Construction and the Built Environment Andrew Pulleyn, MA (Conservation Studies Historic Buildings), BA (Training & Education), CertEd. Andrew has been a Construction lecturer for the past 23 years. Previously Andrew worked as a Construction Director with substantial experience in construction contracting – ranging from domestic repair, refurbishment, adaptation and new build to commercial maintenance, repair and restoration/conservation of historic buildings. Alongside working as a tutor at York College, Andrew has worked for City & Guilds Institute and Pearson Edexcel, writing and examining a range of qualification modules for use within UK and International markets. Andrew teaches across the whole programme range of Construction at the College and takes great pride in student progression.

Experienced Tutors who will Shape Your Learning

FD and BA (Hons) Media Make up, Special Effects and Hair DesignSharon Barrington has been a Lecturer for 20 years at the College and specialises in creative project management and period hairdressing. With extensive industry experience, Sharon has worked on numerous independent films, photoshoots and music videos in addition to working for both CBBC and Emmerdale. Sharon also gained vast cosmetic retail knowledge from her time working for the Japanese company Shiseido.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Product InnovationRebecca O’Leary has been a Fashion Lecturer for the past 13 years. With a 1st class honours degree in Fashion Studies, Rebecca pursued a career in garment technology, supplying men’s outerwear to some of the biggest names in UK high street fashion retail. Alongside her teaching role, Rebecca set up a bridal and women’s loungewear brand, where she remained a director for six years; giving her invaluable insight into the local, national and international fashion industry, both wholesale and direct to customer through online trading platforms. Rebecca is well positioned to advise students on the entrepreneurial skills necessary to set up and run small and medium-sized enterprises within the fashion sector, as well as supporting those students wishing to progress into other fields associated with the creative industries.

Foundation Degree (FD) Digital Technologies with Cybersecurity Richard Hind, MSc (by research) in Computer Science, MCSE (Windows 2000), PGCE in Post Compulsory Education, MTA (Security Fundamentals), PRINCE2:2009 (Foundation) and MBCS. Richard has been a tutor of Digital Technologies at York College since 2002 and prior to that had almost 10 years’ experience in the industry, including roles as Technical Director of PC Science Ltd and Technical Infrastructure Manager of Infobank Software Corporation. He now specialises in Information Security, Computer Architecture, Microcontroller Systems and Project Management, with articles published in the British Computer Society’s “IT Now” journal and “Cybertalk”, published by Software Box Ltd. He is also a “student” member of the Advanced Computer Architecture Group at the University of York.

HNC/D Business Chris Burley, MSc (CRM), BA (Economics & Economic History), PGCE. Chris has been lecturing for the last 6 years in Leadership & Management alongside teaching and tutoring Economics at A level for the past 23 years. Chris has a broad business experience. He currently owns his own craft company and is on the management committee of a local pub. Chris has varied educational experience having previously worked in both a secondary school and a sixth form college, teaching Economics, Business Studies, Sport and ITC. He also has a wealth of business experience; he has been employed by HSBC (in the fraud department), accounting in a multinational pharmaceuticals distributor and accounting at the head office of a global shipping corporation. He values lifelong learning and is currently enrolled in a number of economics and management related OU courses.

Our locationWe’re situated on Sim Balk Lane just off the A1036 Tadcaster Road in York and the South-West border of the outer ring road. Within easy access of a number of major A roads and motorways including the A64, A19, A1 and M62, we’re in an ideal location for commuting.

By RailYork’s central location means it benefits from a number of direct rail links and is easily accessible from anywhere in the country, with almost all major train lines running through the city. The College is roughly two miles from the train station and several bus routes run directly between the two.

By BusWe offer 15 different College bus routes, serving a number of villages and towns in the area for a subsidised fee. As a higher education student you’ll have access to our full bus service, meaning commuting to and from us is a viable option taken up by many of our students.

Several private providers including First York and Coastliner also stop outside of the College. With passes available from these providers, getting to us by public transport is one of the most convenient ways to travel.

By CarWith easy access off several major roads, the College is easy to find and access by car. We offer a permit parking system available for an annual one-off payment or on a pay-as-you-park basis. Bus Routes

We run a zone system spread over 15 different routes covering large swathes of North Yorkshire. Our subsidised fees can be paid for individually or on a yearly basis.

ContinuersOur Level 3 students often progress with us, after completing their A Levels, vocational or apprenticeship course they move onto one of our degree, apprenticeship, or higher-level programmes.

Mature Many of our students are mature learners, these students are often those who are returning to education to progress in their career or looking for a career change. Our mature learners tend to come from the local area and often have busy lives to juggle outside of their course, we’re proud that we are able to offer the flexible learning that they require to succeed.

Whatever your circumstances are, we hope you will find your place within our varied community. A community of like-minded students, all with the same desire to study and accomplish their education ambitions to reach future career goals.

localStaying local while studying can be very beneficial. Many of our students are from the local area and are able to make the most of our flexible courses that allow them to work or balance other commitments alongside their studies. Staying local for some also means saving on accommodation fees.

CELEBRATEOur higher education Graduation Ceremony is an annual event held in the beautiful setting of York Minster. Surrounded by friends and family, you are invited to celebrate the end of your studies and reflect on all the hard work you have put in over the duration of your course. In addition, there are a number of courses who organise end-of-year shows, with students presenting their Final Major Projects to their family, friends and the general public.

After more than 20 years of development and expansion of higher education at York College, we are still in awe of the dedication of our students and the wonderful accomplishments they go on to achieve. Many students successfully complete their studies alongside very demanding careers, family commitments and some, even health issues, in addition to the everyday trials and tribulations we all face. After successfully completing a Level 3 Diploma in Constructing the Built Environment at York College, Lewis took the next logical step to achieve his career goals and continued onto the HNC Construction & the Built Environment. The connections he made whilst studying here resulted in him gaining employment with renowned construction company, Simpson York Ltd, where he currently works as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor.

Lewis credits working in the industry while completing his studies as an invaluable experience, he has been able to boost his academic knowledge and put theory into practice. Upon completing his HNC qualification, Lewis will progress onto further study to complete his training to become a fully qualified quantity surveyor.

CREATIVE STUDIES

Our Creative courses allow you to advance your creative potential and imagination while developing the technical skills required to build a successful career in the creative industries.

Led by practitioners in their field, this dynamic department will guide you through your chosen course to enable you to gain practical skills and learn how to apply tools and techniques in order to produce high-quality work.

These courses have been developed in collaboration with employers, universities, colleges and students to deliver a programme that meets the needs of both today’s students and the industry’s future.

Overview

Our Creative department is home to an array of specialist facilities including: a design studio with pattern cutting tables; Apple Mac suites; pattern CAD room with a Gerber system for digital pattern generation; specialised classrooms; machine room with industrial sewing machines and presses; print room; art gallery space; photography studios and a range of workshops for metal, wood, jewellery, ceramic, glass and forge work.

For the Media Make-up courses there is a newly refurbished, purpose-built prosthetics workshop and hair and make-up studios, with areas for producing portfolios and photographing finished ‘looks’. A collection of human hair lace front wigs that are of industry standard can also be utilised by these students as part of their course.

Other spaces include designated classrooms and University Centre, alongside access to College-wide facilities such as the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.

Explore your creativity and re�ne your technical skills with this practical studio-based course. This degree will allow you to get hands-on and delve into a range of creative practices and techniques, such as textiles, wood and metal work, �ne metal and jewellery, ceramics and 3D making . On this course you can choose to specialise in a particular creative practice or sit between disciplines, both of which we encourage and support. The course is broad with an emphasis on experimentation, and promotes combining of materials and processes to create innovative ideas and outcomes.

You will experience new challenges and explore new concepts. Through learning processes and working with a wide range of materials, you will develop a broad skills base. You will be encouraged

to apply these to your own projects, which will give you a distinct and pro�cient body of work that will enable you to become a creative professional.

Your studies will be underpinned by historical, cultural and theoretical research, as well as gaining a working understanding of the implications of making in contemporary contexts. Our Technical department includes some of the region’s best teaching facilities, with a Construction Skills Centre which is a purpose-built facility accommodating brickwork, joinery and plastering. The Centre contains two large workshop spaces, changing facilities, engineering labs, classrooms and IT suites with industry standard software, meeting the needs of your studies as well as those of the industry.

Engineering courses are supported with a superb range of state-of-the-art facilities; Electronics Laboratories, an Advanced Manufacturing Centre (including Siemens PLCs, Pneumatics Training Rigs, Industry 4 Manufacturing Centre, robotic arm), CAM/CNC suite (including 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC Lathe, CNC Mill etc), CAD suites (AutoCAD and Solidworks), in addition to the more traditional mechanical engineering, fabrication and welding workshop.

Our digital technical courses use dedicated teaching rooms, including a virtual reality games room and high specification work stations, including; Unity Game Engine, 3D studio Macs and Blender.

This course is a two year, part-time day release course for people employed in the Construction industry. It is also appropriate for people with a more varied pro�le of achievement, such as those with extensive work experience or with a range of quali�cations that are related to their work sector.

This Level 4 apprenticeship is ideal for those looking to move into a more senior role as a Site Supervisor or similar job roles such as Assistant Site Manager, Assistant Supervisor, Construction Site Supervisor. Within smaller construction companies, the roles might include Site Manager. This apprenticeship is delivered on a day-release basis, with one day in College during term time and the remaining time with your employer. On completion of the apprenticeship you will also receive a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction and the Built Environment.

We encourage applications from mature or returning students, and with this in mind, applicants who have relevant skills and experience will still be considered, even if they do not hold the traditional entry requirements. Access to Higher Education DiplomaYork College is committed to ensuring individuals can follow their educational path, regardless of their background. We appreciate career changes, re-training or accessing higher education is an ambition many share for a plethora of different

reasons. We also understand jumping straight into a degree to pursue these ambitions may not always be possible.

We offer five Access to Higher Education Diplomas; these courses are Level 3 and equivalent to three A Levels and are studied over a full year. These are designed to give those who do not have relevant experience or qualifications a route to study a degree of their choosing. Our five Diplomas cover: Art and Design, Education Professions, Health Science Professions, Humanities and Social Work and Science. If studied, these diplomas enable students to go onto study an incredibly wide range of subjects within their respective fields. INFORMATION SESSIONSOn receipt of your application you may be invited to attend a taster session. This is your opportunity to meet with a tutor and ask about costs, materials, discounts etc. before deciding whether this is the right course for you. Depending on your course, you may be asked to provide a portfolio of work.

At York College, we use tari� points to indicate the entry level of our courses, so you will need to know how many points your quali�cations are worth. Funding your studies Your fees and living expensesStudying a higher-level qualification is a significant investment in your future. At York College we understand the importance of ensuring you are making a sound financial decision and are committed to supporting you during your time with us.

We recognise that studying for any qualification can be a demanding time and there are lots of decisions to be made. We offer dedicated support to help you pay your fees, settle into College life, concentrate on your studies and achieve the best grades possible.

Higher Education Paying your feesTo study a higher education course at York College you will need to fund your tuition fees and also your living expenses.

Your tuition fees can be paid in the following ways:

• In full at the start of the academic year

• In instalments by Direct Debit

• Employer/ sponsor payment

• By applying for a student loan

Applying for a loanMany students choose to take out a student loan to help with meeting the cost of tuition fees and living expenses. The funding you are specifically entitled to will depend on whether you are a full or part-time student; whether you have previously studied at a higher education level; which country you have been living in and when you start your course. Additional funding is also available for students who have a disability and those who have children or other dependents.

• Students normally residing in England should apply to Student Finance England.

• Students from outside of England (Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) should apply for funding directly from the student finance provider of their home country.

Additional costs are outlined in the pre-contractual information that you will be sent before enrolling onto your course. YORK COLLEGE BURSARYYork College is committed to providing a Bursary Scheme which all eligible higher education students starting their course in September 2021 can apply to. If you are successful, you will receive a payment of £600 to help with the initial costs of settling into your programme.

The purpose of the Higher Education Bursary is to:

• Help students overcome financial barriers in order to access higher education.

• Support and retain our learners.

• Promote a positive attitude to learning.

Students who receive the bursary may use it to help pay for travel costs or buy essential equipment for your course.

The Higher Education Bursary is split into three separate bursaries:

• Care Leavers Bursary

• Student Carer Bursary

• Financial Assistance Bursary

Eligibility for the Care Leaver and Student Carer bursaries is not based on your household income, but you will need to provide evidence of your situation. The Financial Assistance Bursary will normally be assessed alongside your application to Student Finance England and you will not need to complete an additional form.

We also offer a Hardship Fund that provides additional emergency funding on a case-by-case basis. Support is prioritised to students who are having issues with their student loans.

BENEFITSSome students are eligible for benefits throughout their studies, though for some benefits, the amount you receive will be affected by at least some of your student income. Please contact Citizen’s Advice if you are not sure of your entitlement.

If you are in receipt of, or will be applying for, universal credit, we recommend that you contact Student Finance England and request a breakdown of your student finance award for benefit purposes to send to the DWP and check your payments thoroughly to ensure that they are correct.

COUNCIL TAX Full-time students are usually exempt from council tax. If you are not sure whether your course is classed as full or part-time, please contact the InfoZone. If you live in York, you will need to register for council tax exemption online at www.york.gov.uk. If you live elsewhere, you can request a council tax exemption certificate from the InfoZone.

Higher-level Professional

Qualifications

Do you have fees to pay? For higher-level professional qualifications the fee you pay depends on a number of criteria, for example: your age, previous studies, the level of the course and whether the course is full or part-time.

Some students may be eligible for funding from the government, so we recommend that you undertake a personal assessment with one of our expert advisors to establish your position. For your own assessment contact the InfoZone on [email protected] or call 01904 770770.

Fee payers To study an higher-level professional course at York College you will need to fund your tuition fees. Full-time students may also need to fund their living expenses.

Your tuition fees can be paid in the following ways:
