fullback, and Ben Carl, who can runand catch, add more dimension to theoffensive attack.

Leading receiver Ryan Kirchnerregistered the fifth-best single-seasontotal in school history with 50 recep-tions for 504 yards and one touch-down. He also averaged 10.4 yardsper punt return. Kevin Chillis movedinto the wide receiver rotation duringthe final part of his redshirt freshmanseason.

“Each player has the passion andtalent, plus can catch the ball,” Fordsays. “They have been productive andshould have great seasons.”

Tight end Paul Booker (10 recep-tions) can stretch the field with decentsize and strength. Receivers JameelGay, who had 18 catches last year, wasbaptized as a true freshman, whileJohn Lullen has been a solid collegianover the previous three seasons.

For UAlbany to see a significantupgrade, a reshuffled offensive linemust improve. Kyle O’Keefe is the topreturning lineman. A 6-foot-3, 290-pound left guard, the senior wasslowed by injuries one year ago, buthas physical toughness coupled withleadership ability. Keith Peifer (6-5,280) has moved from tackle to rightguard is in his third year as a starterwhere he will not have to operate in asmuch space.

Chaz Mitchell (6-3, 270) andJordan Migliore (6-6, 295) have theupper hand at both tackle positions aspreseason begins. Mitchell is athleticand moves well. Anthony Bazzoffi (6-3, 335) has shown progress at leftguard, while sophomore tackleKadeem Williams (6-7, 300) isexpected to blossom. Redshirtfreshman Brian Parker has made theswitch from tight end.

DEFENSE: The Great Danes, who havetraditionally been tough to run against, return seven starters on defense. “Wehave experience and enough depthand talent,” Ford says.

Eddie Delaney (6-6, 250) and MarcWargo (6-2, 245) are proven talents asdefensive ends. Delaney, who playswith one hand, earned second-teamall-conference honors for the secondtime as a junior. He made 41 tackles, including 4.5 for losses. Wargo had 18tackles and led the team in sacks(3.5).

Zach Gallo (6-0, 265) and OciekaBakou (6-0, 270) are penciled in as thestarting tackles. Gallo, who has beena solid performer, totaled 32 tackles. An agile junior, Bakou (24 tackles) hasmade the steady incline. DeanMercuris is capable in a variety of

UAlbany established a programrecord with its fifth consecutive winningseason one year ago by recording non-league victories over Maine and Yaleen route to a 6-5 campaign. But theGreat Danes, who have won fourNortheast Conference championshipssince 2002, were not satisfied aftertying for fourth place in the conferencestandings.

“If you can’t run the ball and can’tstop the run, you will not be playing inDecember,” offers head coach BobFord, the active NCAA Football Cham-pionship Subdivision (FCS) leader with247 career victories. “We have anopportunity to make a run at the title.”

“This will be a better football team,”explains Ford, whose team ended the2010 schedule by winning its finalthree games. “It’s a more experiencedgroup, but I am concerned that we hadten players miss the spring due toinjury.”

For the second year in a row, theNEC champion receives an automaticberth in the NCAA FCS playoffs.

OFFENSE: The Great Danes return theirstarting quarterback, top two runningbacks and leading receiver.

Buddy Leathley took over thestarting quarterback duties at mid-season as a redshirt freshman.Leathley, who has the ability to run andthrow, completed 67 of 125 passattempts for 748 yards and fourtouchdowns and was third on the teamin rushing with 178 yards and twoscores. Dan Di Della, a 6’5" senior, tooka lot of snaps during the spring withLeathley recovering from off-seasonsurgery. He passed for 720 yards andthree TDs last season.

The tailback position is loaded withDillon Romain and Andrew Smith.Romain was the NEC’s top offensiverookie after rushing for 547 yards andsix touchdowns and averaging 86.7 all-purpose yards per game. Smith, ajunior who has more than 1,800 all-purpose yards in his two-year careerand has played multiple positions, hada team-high 724 yards and seventouchdowns on the ground.

“Drew has done some great thingsand I am glad he is on our side,” Fordstates. “Dillon is a throwback runner. He is tough and runs to his nose.”

Ben Miseikis, who rushed for 163yards and two TDs, has been produc-tive in every situation as a tailback.Tramaine Wilson, who missed most oflast season, has breakaway speed.Justin Petersen, the good-hands

positions. Andrew Smith (6-2, 255) isalso versatile and has every physicaltool.

Dave Plungas and Jon Morgan areback as the starting inside lineback-ers. Plungas led the team in tackleswith 71 as a sophomore. Morgan, whomade the successful transition fromthe outside and could become an all-conference type, was second with 54tackles and scored on a fumble returnfor the second time during his career.

Raymond Dorcely, a 6-foot senior, should start at outside linebacker.Dorcely, who is usually in the rightplace at the right time, made 26tackles. Alex Helmer, who improved inthe spring, and redshirt freshman KyleJordan add depth at the position.

The defensive secondary is aveteran unit. “We may be strongest atsafety,” Ford states. “There is goodexperience with athleticism on the frontlevel.” Jake Ciccarello, a physicalsafety, and Justin Hassan, a second-year starter at free safety, each had 51tackles and two interceptions.Justininan Mason (21 tackles) willalso see time at both safety positions.

Leon Saddler, who originallyattended C.W. Post and had 41 tacklesand four pass break-ups last season, and Duane Harper figure to be thecornerbacks. Kareem Cooper andRandall Extanus (20 tackles, 5 PBUs)are in more prominent roles.

KICKING GAME: Both specialistsreturn. Herb Glass, who handleskickoffs and placements, is among theschool’s all-time scorers with 164points. He is second in career fieldgoals (28) and has made 86 point-after attempts. Paul Layton averaged40.1 yards per punt in his first colle-giate season and drilled 12 kicks of50-plus yards.
