• Resources only exist as part of ecosystems

• Scientific knowledge ≠ policy judgment

• Meaningful public participation matters

• Proactive spatial planning is necessary (but not easy!)

Take-away: Place fisheries management within a broader ecosystem context through proactive spatial planning
