Where did it happen? Darfur is a region in

western Sudan . It covers an area of some 493,180 square kilometers. The area is about the size of

Spain.

Who was involved?

• Rebels from many African ethnic groups fought against the government.

• President Bashir of Sudan had his army fight against these rebels.

Sudan became independent in 1956,but Darfur and northern Sudan began to fight. The Darfur war began in February 2003.

Why were they fighting?The war can go back to disputes over agricultural land . Rebels from African ethnic groups (including the Janjaweed) claimed that the Sudanese government was ignoring Darfur and began attacking government targets in the region . In response , government forces began attacking both rebels and civilians in Darfur.

What happened? What happened?• More than 2 millions people

were killed .• Sudan people made most of

their money from farming. Because of the fighting , it was hard for farmers to produce food.

• The weather was bad and it was a long time without rain.

• This is one of the reasons there was not enough food.

As a result , hunger and sickness became widespread.

And then, many international groups have accused the government and the Janjaweed of human rights abuses including murder and rape .

In 2006 , the government signed a peace deal with a major rebel group. However, two other rebel groups rejected the deal, and violence in Darfur continued. There is still fighting today.

When will Darfur’s violence end?

In response, government forces began attacking both rebels and civilians in Darfur. And the violence in Darfur got much worse in late 2003 and 2004. And it continues today.http://www.unmultimedia.org/radio/

How did it end?

In 2009 , the International Criminal Court (ICC) ordered the arrest of President Bashir for his role in Darfur violence . But Bashir was reelected president in 2010 . Later that year , the ICC also charged Bashir with genocide .But he has not been arrested.
