Dear Friend,
Thank you for your investment in United Way of Siouxland. We are grateful for each and every one of
our community partners and for the important role they play in improving our community. Over the past
year, we’ve seen impressive results and have forged new relationships across the communities we serve.
The 2013-14 campaign was one of the most successful drives in the history of our United Way, raising
$3,300,000.
The most recent Community Impact Funding cycle allowed
for support of 31 local programs and initiatives, including a
new program that is being piloted in Iowa, called the Iowa
Reading Corps. This program, modeled after the
Minnesota Reading Corps, provides specialized tutoring for
children in grades K-3 who’ve fallen behind in reading.
The Iowa Reading Corps had outstanding results in the
2013 Fall semester, with nearly 50% of all children who graduated from the Iowa program coming from
Sioux City’s first location at Washington Elementary. This is an outstanding accomplishment and we’re
looking forward to expanding the program for the 2014-15 school year.
Our focus on giving a hand-up versus a hand-out allows people’s lives to improve, not just for a day or a
week, but for a lifetime. The tremendous support provided to United Way initiatives & strategies moves
people up on the scale of life. Every day, we hear stories of individuals and families who have gone
from barely getting by, to achieving success through educational opportunities, financial literacy, mental
health counseling and/or physical supports. These individuals and families now hold the power to
break the negative cycles that have been holding them back. Every day, you are making lives better.
On behalf of the 49,000 people helped last year we thank you!
Sincerely,
Marie Buckley Heather Hennings
Chair, United Way Board of Directors President, United Way of Siouxland
Nearly 50% of all children who graduated from the statewide reading program came from Siouxland.
