You gave the community 3,076 volunteer hours through United Way projects!

Dear FrienDs OF uniteD Way:A 6-year-old reads her first sentence and a world of opportunity opens before her eyes.

It might seem that her life transformed at that moment. But it actually took a lifetime of transformative moments to make it possible: during those times when her parents read to her, during visits to the doctor for regular check-ups, during her attendance at a quality childcare center and during her playtime with family and friends.

The combination of skills, experiences, home care and health care that she gained in early childhood made it possible for her to read that sentence. She started school ready to succeed – thanks to you.

In addition to our work to provide basic needs to struggling families and support to older adults, one of United Way’s top priorities is to ensure that children in the Greater Richmond-Petersburg region have the opportunity to start kindergarten ready to succeed in school and in life.

To reach that goal, United Way and the Greater Richmond Chamber facilitate Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond. Last year, this initiative launched the Regional Plan for Children’s School Readiness, the community’s consensus on what it will take to achieve school readiness for all of the region’s children. More than 100 public and private organizations and businesses are part of the coalition that is implementing the five-year action plan.

Regional cooperation is the key to successfully implementing the Plan. A recent campaign dedicated to the Plan’s priority strategy of on-time enrollment for kindergarten resulted in the historic achievement of a shared registration day across 10 localities. Through promotion of this date across the region by Smart Beginnings, on-time enrollment soared. When children start school on time and prepared, they will go on to read at grade level, graduate on time, enter the workforce and become leaders.

This critical work will ultimately create opportunities for a better tomorrow for our children and for our community.

As you know, our children are not the only ones in need. Your support continues to prepare youth to become the strong workforce of the future and to help struggling families achieve financial stability. Your contributions also help older adults retain their independence and support their caregivers, who are often still in the workforce.

Your generosity makes it possible for United Way to affect the lives of thousands of local people. Thank you for your commitment to our community, your investment in our United Way and your belief in the future of our region.

Sincerely,

Sherrie Brach, CEO Steven Scherger, Board Chair

health: how united Way supports the health and Wellness of Older adults

A grandmother with active grandchildren, Brenda was discouraged when hip surgery left her in declining health. Her limited mobility kept her at home, alone and struggling. Older adults across our community face the same isolation – but United Way is working to change that.

United Way helps older adults age well and remain healthy, independent members of our community. We invest in nutritious meals for homebound seniors, as well as medical care at home and adult day services in the community. Through a partnership with the Y and the Friendship Cafes run by Senior Connections, the Capital Area Agency on Aging, we encourage older adults to stay healthy through exercise.

Brenda’s family encouraged her to attend an exercise program. Now, she is strong enough to play with her grandchildren and do yard work. Also through United Way, her family caregivers found the support they needed to help Brenda.

Last year, United Way helped more than 11,000 older adults remain in their homes and age with dignity. That is not enough. The need is great, and it’s growing: The number of people over age 65 in Virginia is going to double. United Way and Senior Connections are leading a coalition that is actively working to meet the challenges and opportunities of this coming age wave.

More than 9,000 older adults live in poverty in our region – they struggle daily to meet basic needs and afford medical care.

eDuCatiOn: how united Way helps Children and youth achieve their potential

Each year in our region, almost 1,100 students who enter ninth grade fail to graduate with their peers four years later because they drop out of school. We are working to change that — through United Way, you are impacting children from birth through graduation.

Building Supportive, Nurturing Families Helping Nikita become a successful parent is the best way to ensure that her daughter will start

school ready to succeed. United Way creates opportunities for parents like Nikita by supporting programs that provide education and mentoring in families’ homes. Hundreds of families are

waiting to participate – increasing the availability of home-visiting programs is a key priority in the years ahead for the Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond initiative and United Way.

Increasing Access to Quality Childcare We know that 62% of parents of preschool-age children work outside

the home, making quality child care essential. United Way helps hardworking families afford quality childcare and helps childcare centers provide the best care

possible. Also, the 700 members of United Way’s Women’s Leadership Initiative are raising their voices, volunteering their time and providing financial support for this work.

The struggle continued in 2010 for so many people in our region — job losses and economic challenges are making it difficult to rebound. Loss of employment creates burdens for individuals and families, and even worse is the loss of stable housing and homelessness.

United Way and its partners support individuals and families in crisis, but the need for help is greater than the available resources. Last year, United Way helped more than 30,000 people obtain or maintain financial stability through emergency support, safety-net services and job training and employment programs. Keeping families together and helping them move out of crisis remains urgent, but we need to do even more.

Avoiding crisis must be the goal. To that end, United Way is now the fiscal partner for MetroCASH, the Greater Richmond Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition. Through the coalition’s free tax preparation services, United Way helps families receive tax refunds that help pay bills and build savings.

Over the next year, United Way will expand its work to promote asset building and financial stability for low- to moderate-income families and individuals. We are striving to get to the root of the problem and reach more people before they are in crisis.

inCOMe: how united Way helps people achieve Financial stability and stable housing

More than 1,000 people – including almost 160 children – are homeless in our region every day.

Preparing Children for Kindergarten On-time registration for kindergarten is crucial for children’s school readiness and success. Last year, more than 4,000 children registered late, which can lead to attendance delays that put those children at a disadvantage. To increase on-time enrollment this year, Smart Beginnings formed partnerships with 10 local school systems to facilitate and promote a common regional registration date. Hundreds more children were enrolled on time as a result.

Keeping Youth On Track Youth need support and adult role models to help them stay on track and

graduate from high school. Through your support of United Way, more than 16,000 school-age children participated in quality after-school and prevention programs last year. Kids who attend programs that help them develop socially,

academically and emotionally have the opportunity to become better students and stronger members of our community.

Creating Opportunities for Our Children The future of our region lies in the hands of our children. Your generous support of United Way is helping more than 30,000 local children each

year to grow into adults who are accomplished members of the workforce and strong leaders of the community.
