Many thanks to the USCTA for all your help with the Tennis & Racquet Club Roof Project and for

directing the 2012 auction proceeds to this effort. The support from the US tennis community has been

great and we look forward to hosting players and tournaments again in 2013/14.

Thank You USCTA!

Dear Fellow Member: A tale of Two Cities - this year was the year of Chicago and next year will be the year of Boston. As you can see from our cover story, we are thrilled to have the historic Chicago court back in use after a seventy-five year hiatus.

The grand opening in October 2012 was spectacular.

The Boston Tennis & Racquet roof renovation began this summer. Through the enormous efforts of Suzy Schwartz and her committee the deal was struck with the building’s owner and the funds were pledged to undertake this long overdue project. I’m pleased to say that the USCTA, through a pledge of its 2012 auction proceeds, contributed almost $60,000 to the Boston effort. We wish them all the best and we can’t wait for the court’s official reopening in the fall of 2013. The 2012/13 season was very active and extremely successful by all accounts. Starting back in October at the Hadden Tomes and culminating in August with the Pell Cup, our Association and the people involved running the tournaments have been and continue to be hard at work making things go smoothly. Of note this year on the professional front is the dominance of Camden Riviere who captured his second U.S. Open title without the loss of a set, conceding just seven games in his first three matches and overall a total of fourteen games in twelve sets. In the semis, he demolished the defending champion Bryn Sayers 0, 2 and 1, and in the finals he dismissed his long-time rival Steve Virgona 2, 4 and 1. Camden also won the National Open defeating James Stout in 4 sets, and he beat the current World Champion, Rob Fahey for the U.S. Professional Singles playing for the Schochet Cup title in June. Finally Camden led his New

England team of Tony Hollins and Rich Smith to victory over New York in the finals to capture the 2012-2013 National League title. Congratulations to Camden Riviere for a

great season. Our hopes are with him, Steve Virgona and Tim Chisholm; as they enter the eliminator season for the World Championship to be held in Melbourne next May. We hope to bring the world championship title back to America for the first time since Wayne Davies held it twenty years ago. On the amateur front, it’s been an interesting year with no one player dominating the scene. Young Pat Winthrop continues to be a force to be reckoned with by winning the U.S. Amateur defeating the up and coming Danny McBride in straight sets. On the other hand, Bradley Allen won the Tuxedo Gold Racquet, defeating Pat Winthrop in straight sets (it should be noted that Bradley had to get past yours truly first which he did with ease). Lex Miron is proving to be a force in the 40 and over crowd, winning the singles and doubles in Tuxedo. And continuing to show his command of the game of doubles, Simon Aldrich won both the 40’s doubles (with Lex) and the 50’s doubles (with Charlie Johnstone). It should not go unmentioned that the U.S. sent a team to the Bathurst Cup in England this year. Ben Cook, Rakesh Jasani and Captain Jeremy Wintersteen met

some fierce competition in the extremely experienced and talented Aussie team where they lost both singles and doubles. In the consolation against the French, unfortunately the result was the same, but the matches were extremely close. We are proud to have such fine players representing us in this historic competition. Speaking of team events, my sources tell me the Lord Percival Cup had the largest turn out in its history. The matches were hard fought and only in the last moments of the battle did Prince’s Court secure the victory. Let us not forget the Anne Boleyn and the U.S. Mixed held in Philly in February. Ruth Kelly of Philadelphia defeated Francine Royan of Tuxedo in the finals of the Anne Boleyn and Patrick Winthrop and his partner, Sara Lacombe, defeated yours truly and his talented partner, Amanda Avedissian. Good times in Philly!! For the older set, the U.S. hosted the World Masters at the Racquet & Tennis Club in New York. Charlie Johnstone, Mike Gooding and staff are to be commended for coordinating a gargantuan effort to schedule matches, arrange housing, organize social events and award prizes for over 60 competitors. By all accounts it was one of the most successful Masters in recent memory. Also, Tuxedo and Philadelphia are to be thanked for their efforts in hosting the team events, the Bostwick, Danby and Cockram Cups. These international senior team competitions are the epitome of what the game of court tennis is about for the “mature” crowd with camaraderie and sportsmanship winning the day. This year was also the year of the U.S. hosting the Clothier Cup, a junior team event pitting the best U.S. junior players against the best Australian juniors. I’m afraid our best just wasn’t good enough, however,

as the Aussies won 8-0 over two days of singles and doubles competition in Newport. Bradley Allen is to be applauded for his efforts in organizing the trip for the Aussie players which included matches in New York and Tuxedo. Big thanks as well to Rich Smith and Sergio Lopez for their efforts in Newport. I attended the matches and was impressed with our team’s comportment on court even as they were being dominated by a stronger, more experienced Australian team. Off court the boys got along famously. Finally it should be noted that the name of our game will continue to be “court tennis” in the United States. After your Board analyzed the survey results it felt that there were not enough compelling reasons to change the name to “real tennis” to conform to the international game. Perhaps in the future we will revisit the notion, but for now we are still the USCTA. Yours Respectfully, Greg Van SchaackPresident

The first reference to tennis in the Americas extant in the historical record is a decree against playing tennis on Sundays, issued by the Governor of New Amsterdam, Peter Stuyvesant, on October 26, 1656. The centuries that followed were replete with further proof that some version of the “game of kings” was being played in North America. In October 1876, exactly a year and a half after the newly invented game of lawn tennis came to these shores, Hollis Hunnewell and Nathaniel Thayer opened the first bona fide court tennis facility on Buckingham Street in Boston. Over the course of the next 120 years, 18 more courts were built; today there are ten active courts in the US, the oldest in Newport (1880) and the youngest in Chicago (2012).

The United States Court Tennis Association, under the leadership of its first president William L. Van Alen, initially convened on January 30, 1955 in New York. Prior to that time there was no central authority to regulate, promote, and preserve the game in the United States. Indeed, when the Laws of Tennis in America were first adopted on New Year’s Day 1934, just three clubs – The Racquet & Tennis Club, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, and The Tennis & Racquet Club – were signatories.

ADMINISTRATIONBesides the promulgation of tennis rules, which were revised in 1979 and again in 2000, the Association has the authority to coordinate and control all national championships and major competitions, and in conjunction with its member clubs, organize and conduct tournaments for all levels of play in America. The USCTA sets the annual tournament schedule and supplies the national level competition medals. The governing body raises funds through membership dues and contributions and by hosting such events as the U.S. Court Tennis Association Annual Dinner and Auction. The USCTA financially backs the construction, maintenance, and restoration of courts, and supports the development of female and junior players. The Association conducts relations with other national governing bodies around the world, promotes international play, and supports the U.S. at international competitions.

PROFESSIONAL TENNISOne of its most essential functions is the vigorous support of professionals in America, without whom the continued existence of the game would be precarious. The Association provides prize money for tournaments such as the National Open, the World Championship,

the U.S. Professional Singles playing for the Schochet Cup and the Men’s and Ladies’ U.S. Opens.

AMATEUR TENNISThe Association also encourages top flight amateur play. It began publishing a list of the Top 25 U.S. Amateur Players in 2004 in order to stimulate competition and increase the level of play, particularly among mid to upper level players. The USCTA also promotes team competition by supplying teams and backing for such international tournaments as the Bathurst Cup.

JUNIOR TENNISThe USCTA is committed to ensuring the future of the sport in America through an active Junior Tennis program. It offers workshops and professional instruction as well as creates opportunities for young players to compete by funding international teams and supports U.S. tournaments like the Junior Nationals and the Lieb Cup.

PUBLICATIONSThe USCTA publishes an Annual Report, a monthly e-newsletter “Chase the First,” a fixtures calendar, Top 25 rankings, e-mail news, and other announcements. The USCTA, in conjunction with the USCTPF, also maintains a website.

2012-2013 Annual Report

We expect our financial condition to be excellent again for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2013. Although our projected cash position of more than $130,000 is expected to be less than a year ago, we believe we are still in a strong financial position that will allow us to continue to do many of the activities and support our membership base as we have in the past. Additionally, we

believe our cash cushion will allow us to weather any downturn in the economy, to fund any large unforeseen expenditure, or to withstand a reduction in our revenue.

Our revenue for the year increased to an all-time high. A significant decision the Association made this year was to donate our annual auction proceeds of approximately $57,000 to the Boston court for its refurbishment and roof repair. The auction proceeds were the highest ever raised as the membership enthusiastically supported the Boston project. This contribution, when combined with other large donations, will ensure the future viability of that court. Our revenue from membership dues also increased as we added new members, a significant number coming from the Chicago court opening.

Our expenses also increased slightly over the prior fiscal year as we increased our commitment for prize money. We continue to support the professional game and this year increased our prize money to the U.S. Pro Singles–Playing for theSchochet Cup. Last year we made a major financial commitment to our communications group, which we believe has helped improve our interaction and communications with our members. The web site is now continuously updated and the annual report has been upgraded significantly to provide the permanent annual record of tournament results, club reports, pictures and articles for our membership. Finally, the remainder of our expenses is due to insurance, meetings, mailings, photos and various miscellaneous items.

As we have in the past, we plan to continue our conservative fiscal policies in order to keep our finances healthy. As always, we again thank the USCTA members for their strong support of the Association and its activities.

We will make available the financials for the 2012-2013 fiscal year as soon as the accountants finish them in the fall.

NOTE 1 - SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

NATURE OF ORGANIZATION: The United States Court Tennis Association, Inc. (USCTA) is a non-profit corporation organized on February 25, 1955 for the purpose of fostering and promoting the game of court tennis for persons of all ages. USCTA’s activities include establishing and administering the rules governing the game of court tennis, supporting clinics and special events, and selling merchandise for promotional activities.

BASIS OF ACCOUNTING: The accompanying financial statements have been prepared on the cash basis of accounting. Consequently, certain revenues are recognized when received rather than when earned, and certain expenses are recognized when cash is disbursed rather than when the obligation is incurred.

DEPRECIATION: Property and equipment are being amortized using accelerated methods over the estimated useful lives of the respective assets.

INCOME TAXES: The Association is an organization which is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501 (c) (4) of the Internal Revenue Code.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT PRESENTATION: For the financial statements, USCTA has adopted Statement of Financial Accounting Standard (SFAS) No. 117, “Financial Statements of Not-for-Profit Organization.” Under SFAS No. 117, USCTA is required to report information regarding its financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestricted net assets, temporarily restricted net assets, and permanently restricted assets.

CONTRIBUTIONS: USCTA has also adopted SFAS No. 116, “Accounting for Contributions Received and Contributions Made.” Accordingly, any contributions received are recorded as unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently restricted support depending on the existence and/or nature of any donor restrictions.

This past year saw a continuation of the efforts of the U.S. Court Tennis Preservation Foundation to assist the game where and as needed. We stand ready to support the efforts of those who wish to improve the game in this country whether requests emanate from individuals, clubs or the USCTA. Please consider speaking to any member of our board about your ideas.

Looking back on the last season, by virtue of its tax-exempt status, the Foundation was found to be a useful partner in promoting the following activities:

• Continuity of play at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.• Restoration of roof at the Tennis & Racquet Club in Boston• Fostering junior development through the John Lieb endowment• Providing funding for traveling teams to England and Australia• Support of the U.S. Professional Singles Championship for the Schochet Cup• Funding the Foundation Players Program to train promising new players of all ages • Reimbursing the USCTA for costs in connection with the Clothier Cup and Van Alen Cup• Funding for uscourttennis.org

On the administrative side, a few years ago, a small group of people representing the United States Court Tennis Association and the United States Court Tennis Preservation Foundation worked to develop a plan to better coordinate the activities of the two bodies. The primary focus of those

United States Court Tennis Preservation Foundationconversations was optimizing the use of scarce resources: volunteer time and contributions. While the final recommendations were ultimately not adopted, greater cooperation and coordination were encouraged. Following this, beginning late in 2012, the Preservation Foundation began a strategic review of its own operations. We engaged Foundation Management Group, a Washington DC-based nonprofit consulting firm to review our activities and role in the game from top to bottom.

The Executive Committee is expected to complete its consideration of the findings in the summer of 2013, after which a report will be submitted to the Board of the Preservation Foundation, which will consider adopting policies based on the FMG recommendations.

We hope that three purposes will be served by this extensive self-analysis.

1. The Preservation Foundation should try to achieve a higher level of service to the game.2. Greater transparency and understanding as to the efforts of the Preservation Foundation. 3. The report might be useful to others involved in the administration and promotion of the game at all levels.

Of necessity, the Preservation Foundation has been more inwardly focused in 2013 then we have been in the past or would expect to be in the future. That said, we are hopeful that this self-study will permit the Preservation Foundation better to serve the players and the game in the United States going forward.

It was meant to be. In February 2012 when the Racquet Club of Chicago started to pull up the carpet that had lain on the court since the club had given up on court tennis in 1936, they uncovered the past. They were archeologists, almost, discovering an ancient civilization hidden below accumulating layers of cork, carpet, Astroturf and rubber.

The chase lines were still there. There was the gorgeous Joseph Bickley cement, blinking in the light. The Chicago court was the last that the famed construction engineer did; he died in 1923 as the court was being built. His final masterpiece was still there: red bricks laid on their side and then the Bickley cement: a five-inch layer totally intact. You could play that day.

The ball trough running along the center of the court was still there, filled in with concrete; the basket hole at the marker’s box was still there, just filled with loose gravel. They had the original 1924 blueprints and would march around the court, measuring where the walls should be. “In every case, the actual floor matched the blueprints,” said John Cashman, the head professional at the RCC. “We could see that where the Bickley cement ended and where the wall should begin. You could see the place for the tambour. It was magical.”

The other thing the uncovering revealed was the enduring tension over the court. The original Bickley floor had lawn tennis lines on it. When the Racquet Club converted the court in 1936, they first simply played lawn tennis on the Bickley floor, unsure, perhaps, of whether to fully commit the sacrilege of deliberately taking down a court tennis court. Only after the Second World War did they tear out the penthouses, tambour and galleries and construct a simple white box with a carpet.

Regularly thereafter, RCC members discussed bringing court tennis back to the club but it wasn’t until the last couple of years that the process accelerated. An influx of younger members newly passionate about the tennis flowed into the older stream of court tennis

aficionados (many also racquets players) and the notion, after meetings and votes, became a reality in November 2011.

In February 2012 work began. The project team included incoming RCC president Bill Bickford, the contractor, Bramco Construction, the architect, Northworks Architects and consultants: Ally Bulley, John Cashman, Mike Gooding, Ed Hughes, Peter Lucke-Hille, Colin Lumley and Chris Ronaldson. The Millennium Court at Middlesex University in London, built in 1999, was taken as the most usual model for the renovation. Despite international standards for tennis courts, each court is different. “If you went around measuring every part of every court in the world,” Cashman said, “you’d find different numbers for each court. We tried to keep to the middle.” For instance, the dedans is four inches shorter in length than many courts—the slightly smaller size is perhaps more suitable for the current game, in which forcing has becoming so dominant.

By following the original 1924 blueprints, the committee discovered a few anomalies. The original penthouse was made of Bickley cement, not wood and had no proper bandeau. Its pitch was at 19%. RCC had to recalibrate the penthouse roof to 27% which is more standard today.

Page 29

2012-2013 Annual Report

Also the blueprints suggested that from the floor to the edge of the penthouse was 7.7 feet; the blueprints forgot to factor in the five inches of the Bickley floor, so it was actually 7.2 feet.

Through the spring, work continued apace. Pat Pugliese, the RCC masseuse, built the benches and ball in the troughs dedans. The club agreed to enlarge the original royal dedans and add a bar in the corner. In July Steve Virgona, the Australian who was a pro at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia for a half dozen yearsand two-time world champion, relocated to Chicago. He joined Will Hopton, a racquets pro familiar with tennis, and Cashman who had a deep background in tennis, having started his coaching career as an apprentice at RCOP in 1975, leaving Philadelphia in 1988 to come to Chicago.

The court became playable in late July. On Wednesday August 1, 2012, the Racquet Club of Chicago formally initiated play. About twenty-five members played that afternoon and evening and then they had a dinner in the library. In September the club hosted a formal opening for all its members, of which two hundred and fifty came, and in October they hosted the grand international opening.

The latter was a stunning, exciting, exhausting four-day party. More than two dozen clubs were represented. Three former world champions (Pete Bostwick, Howard Angus and Chris Ronaldson) came, as did the current men’s world champion Rob Fahey. Everyone unhappily dispersed on Sunday—or so they thought they had. Because of Hurricane Sandy, many people got stranded in Chicago or other parts of the country—some didn’t get home until Thursday evening.

What to do if you are stranded by a hurricane? Play tennis. The funny thing was that the court was booked those days by local players. “In the beginning we had a bunch of group clinics and guys were coming up, curious to see what court tennis was about,” said Cashman. “And we had about twenty guys who already knew how to play. But even in August, the court was full eight hours a day.”

Court tennis has been a huge success for RCC. The dedans bar has been busy. Many visiting players who have work or relatives in Chicago stop in for some tennis, some regularly. Hampton Court came on a tour; Prince’s Court came out for an inter-city weekend. The

club hosted National League matches attended by more than a hundred members and two successful amateur tournaments. Fifty people entered the club championship in singles; twenty-five teams were in the doubles draw. From March 11 to May 3, 2013, tennis had 392 hours of play (for comparison racquets had 260, squash had 252 and squash doubles had 180). Seventy Chicagoans have joined the USCTA, helping set the record for the largest influx of new members in a single year in the Association’s history.

And Billy the rat-catching dog has solidified as the symbol of the club. He is on the back wall at the pass line, and his potential and actual victims are depicted in various poses on the bandeau. “We are extremely proud of our Billy logo at the pass line, not to mention our bandeau rats,” Bulley said, “and we are confident that bandeau décor is a budding trend which will soon be sprouting up in various courts around the world. It is the court tennis equivalent of body art.”

The dog represents a confidence in tennis in Chicago. “It was so helpful talking with Haven Pell at Tuxedo one weekend” Cashman said. “He was the last guy to build a court in America. We were so stressed about the building, wanting this to be the best court. The last thing we wanted was someone to come here and find something we did wrong. Haven said, ‘Your court will be your court. Take this ball and run with it. Have fun. Don’t take it too seriously.’ And so we went in with Billy and everyone has loved that.” The original print of Billy hangs in the men’s bathroom downstairs. “In the past couple of years, it had slowly become an image associated with the club,” said

Bill Bickford. ‘During the restoration, we debated putting in a crown like other clubs or an onion”—the name “Chicago” comes from the French rendering of the local Native American word shikaakwa, meaning “wild onion” for the plants common along the Chicago River—“but this scrappy, one-eyed rodent-killing canine seemed to sum up the city well.”

Normally a sleepy time at RCC, summer is now busy. “It is a beautiful thing,” Cashman said. “The court is air-conditioned. We’ve got a summer league on Thursdays for racquets and tennis. Bookings are steady. Five years ago it was much more laid back here in the summer. Now it is super busy.” Tara Lumley, the eighteen-year-old daughtet of U.S. Hall of Famer Penny Lumley, and Colin Lumley, even came for a gap-year month of apprencenticeship. “We could not be more pleased with the results of the restoration and, more important, the level of play over the past year,” Bickford said. “We have received very positive feedback from the many distinguished guests who have traveled to Chicago to play court tennis. John Cashman and Steve Virgona continue to build an impressive program for our membership as well as the entire court tennis community. Our club tournaments are over-subscribed, the open tournament weekends have been a huge success, and the national league matches have exhibited the highest level of competition for all to enjoy. Any regrets? Not (yet) making plans for court #2!”

Club Reports 2012-2013

The past season for the NTC can be categorized as one of continued, modest growth. Due to the able stewardship of our treasurer, Berry Packham, we are in very good financial shape. Last year saw us able to meet our expense targets each month, while exceeding our revenue expectations on a regular basis. This has resulted in a slight year end surplus, a good thing, but with it increased expectations for the future. With the strong fiscal guidance from the board our prospects for continued growth appear to be realistic.

Membership has increased slightly over last year under Steve Devoe’s friendly guidance and the goals set out at the beginning of the year have been surpassed. But, as everyone knows, this is a critical area, requiring constant, unflagging attention. We are always on the lookout for new people of character, interested in joining our unique organization and to accomplish this all members are encouraged to keep passing the word about all the benefits of becoming a member of the court tennis Family at the NTC.

As busy as the court is, we have not been flooded with complaints from members unable to find playing time. Prime time slots are difficult, but there are always a few periods each week which remain open until the last minute. Right now the court is open for bookings almost fourteen hours a day. That works out to eleven booking periods a day or seventy-seven periods per week. We have been averaging just under eighty hours of play per week for the recent past and that equates

to an 80% occupancy rate. Not bad for an organization that numbers fewer than 150 members all told.

With regard to events, the National Tennis Club is certainly one of the busiest courts in the country. For the last few years we have held roughly 25% of all USCTA sanctioned events. This situation should be alleviated to a certain extent when the roof repairs, currently underway in Boston, are completed by year end. In the interim all Boston members have been extended the courtesy of playing at the NTC while their court is out of play. Simply call Rich or Sergio and join the summer fun in Newport. On the national front, Pat Winthrop continues to hold the # 1 Amateur Ranking on this side of the pond, along with several of the more prestigious titles. So take note current juniors; Pat is one of the many end products of the same junior system you currently enjoy. The bar is set pretty high, but the result is there for all to see and it is certainly eminently attainable.

Other accomplishments on the National front saw Tom Pickin, a former Newport junior, reach the finals of the Level 30 Singles Championship, the Greevy Cup, while more recently Petra Napolitano fought to victory in a tough, though unlikely, Three-Setter, against Sheila Reilly in the U.S. Ladies Invitational Singles. The 60’s and 70’s National Singles and Doubles saw several local stalwarts take home some silverware: Frank Oliveira deserves high praise for winning the 70’s Doubles with Berry Packham as his partner and playing well enough in the singles to get to the final. On the other side of the doubles draw was Spencer Berger who fought hard in a losing effort as one of the finalists. In the 60’s Doubles Jonathan Pardee, who organized a flawless event as Tournament Director,

also found time to combine with Alex Walsh to play well enough to reach the final, where they ran into a very accomplished pair from out of town and lost, but none-the-less home grown talent took half the medals on offer. A good showing for the NTC!

In early June the U.S. Professional Singles Championship playing for the Schochet Cup saw a loaded international field produce some fantastic play, culminating in a final between current World Champion Rob Fahey and Camden Riviere, currently the World # 2. Camden won a highly contested three setter, featuring unbelievable shots and gets and a level of play to which we would all like to aspire. We are particularly grateful for the continued generosity of many longtime sponsors of the event, most notably Dan diBartolomeo and Northfield Information Services - was their 20th year and also Suzy and Jay Schochet, without whom this event simply would never have started or grown into what it is annually, the premiere international professional singles competition.

Further on the competitive front, the National Tennis Club continues to lead all clubs in the U.S. on reporting results, both singles and doubles, into the international handicap system, referred to as the RTO In many months over the past year the NTC will represent 50% or more of the results posted to the system by U.S. clubs. This is absurd since we are such a small club, but it is an another indication of how we are supporting the USCTA and tennis in general on a wide front. Newport players continue to travel to all parts of the world to compete and carry the banner and message that court tennis is indeed alive and well in Newport. As we are wont to say, Newport is a very warm and welcoming place. Come and play tennis here, the way it should be enjoyed.

With regard to the physical plant side, the International Hall of Fame, which is responsible for the maintenance of the outside of our building, has again addressed the issue of the leaky roof and finally appears to have been successful. The recent deluge, which recorded in excess of five inches of rain in less than 24 hours, left us with a perfectly dry court and play was allowed to continue unabated throughout. Kudos to the ITHOF. On the inside of the building, our area of responsibility, we have nearly completed two projects that have lingered far too long on the “To Do” List, the Dedans and the Fitness Room. Both areas have been refurbished completely and are experiencing increased usage as a result of the efforts. Hopefully the annual complaint/question we have heard at several AGM’s will not now be heard for at least a generation. A fund raising letter has gone out to the membership to help defray the

cost of these two significant upgrades. Every one of us benefits to a certain extent so be as generous as you can with your contribution; it is appreciated.

In the last month we have debuted a new website. It will continue to be fine-tuned with pictures and stories added as appropriate. If you have questions or submissions talk with Rich or Sergio as they are the ones primarily responsible for content and updates. The Marketing Committee has played a huge part in getting this project off the ground. They deserve a huge thank you from all of us, as we are now the beneficiaries of a modern, user friendly website, www.nationaltennisclub.org. Check it out; I think you will like it.

This report would not be complete without making reference to our professionals. The NTC is truly blessed with some of the best professionals in the game. They make the club a pleasant place to visit, they teach us how to play the game and they make the total experience one of pure pleasure. And on a personal note, as I said at the Awards Dinner in April, this has been a tough year for me personally and if it were not for my family at the NTC I’m not sure how I would have survived.

Lakewood, NJ (1899) Georgian Court By James Zug

Consolidation was the key for Lakewood this past season. For the second year in a row, Neil Smith made a Herculean effort each Tuesday to come to Lakewood and conduct a clinic for the students and staff of Georgian Court University. Neil’s work was greatly appreciated and the GCU women loved playing on the famous Gould court.

The fourth annual Lakewood Invitational came off in September with the usual aplomb. Four clubs were represented and each person, fueled by the pizza lunch, played a total of six sets over the course of the one-day event.

The biggest excitement came in mid-March. The Middlesex University Real Tennis Club, on a lightning-fast, four-day tour of the U.S., visited Lakewood. A group of stalwarts came out to face them, captained by Schuyler Wickes and including Justin May, John Broussard, Jim Zug, Chris Bernabei, Alvar Soosaar and Gary Barnes. In addition, Schuyler and Alvar gave a multi-media lecture on tennis for GCU’s adult learning program and a coterie of GCU coaches, students and administrators. Afterwards, they discussed the future of tennis at the university, which will hopefully lead to more activity. Of note is an interesting development: GCU is admitting male students beginning in the fall of 2013, so for the first time since it was founded in 1908, it will be a fully co-ed institution.

Court Tennis is going along well under the stewardship of Head Professional Tim Chisholm, his new assistant Josh Dodgson, and Tom Greevy. The 2012-2013 season included a number of USCTA events including the Hadden Tomes and Gold Racquets, the U.S. 40’s and 50’s, the Ladies U.S. Open, and the Bostwick and Danby Cups. Also, this year the club completed many club tournaments.

The 2013 Gold Racquet weekend was hugely successful with record numbers of attendees, large draws of top ranked competitors in the championship draws, and record numbers in the Cuspidor and Spittoon events. The tournaments and parties got a vitalizing shot in the arm when a horde of Montrealais brethren descending from the North. Add to that the return of some famous Brits - Maltby, Coyne and Agate -with a bat in each hand and a place in every draw.

Former Tuxedo member and current head of the T&RA William Maltby stormed through the draw until he was finally stopped by defending Champ Pat Winthrop – but he didn’t go down without a fight and let it be known the youthful Mr. Maltby was running back and forth all weekend between rackets and tennis courts. An inspiration to us all. Bradley Allen completed a determined march through the top half of the draw to meet Winthrop in the final. Allen stuck to his game plan and surprised everyone with a decisive straight sets victory, 6/5 6/3 6/1. Congrats Bradley!

In recent years the Cuspidor has come into its own and is now a worthy event people come to play. Some 80 players competed in 4 divisions over 3 days with tight matches and exciting tennis. Here are the final results:

Fountainbleau Division: Rives/Schutz def. Nagler/Habina 8/6Hampton Court Division: Royan/Cutshall def. Ewing/Hebard 8/2Hobart Division: Laukitis/Owens def. Avedissian/Cushing 8/2Newport Division: McHugh/MacKenzie def. GVS/Maltby 8/3

Special thanks to the professional staff and the organizers, Barbara Regna and Guy Devereux, for another memorable weekend in Tuxedo.

The 2013 U.S. 40’s and 50’s were contested on the Tuxedo grounds. William Maltby was back in town to build on his success at Gold Racquets, teaming up with fellow chieftain Greg Van Schaack. But in the U.S. 40’s semis Devereux was on form with Bill Barker and made it through to the final. Longtime hometown team of Charles de Casteja and Nick Sonne put on a great display against Lex Miron and Simon Aldrich, but nothing could deter the latter from the final. And what a barn burner it was! The Devereux Barker team gave it their all but Miron and Aldrich persevered 6/5, 6/5.

In the U.S. 40’s Singles final Bill Barker put up a lively first set win before Miron took control and the gold winning 4/6, 6/0, 6/1. Congrats to Lex for winning both Singles and Doubles titles.

In the U.S. 50’s the Maltby/Van Schaack team charged into the final hungry for some gold to add to their crowded shelves. But there they met 6-time winning team of Charlie Johnstone and Simon Aldrich. A brilliant, thrilling 3 setter ended with lucky #7, 6/4, 4/6, 6/4.

So for Maltby it came down to the U.S. 50s Singles event to claim a title. And claim it he did with a decisive win over Peter Hill in the final. Congrats William!

Tuxedo was proud to host the 2013 U.S. Ladies’ Open. The Singles draw was full of top players and provided excellent matches throughout. Karen Hird worked her way past Helen Grassi to advance to the final, as Tara Lumley did with Tuxedo crowd favorite Freddy Adam. In the end Lumley proved too much for Hird winning 4/6, 6/4, 6/0.

In the doubles, Adam and Hird had their revenge with a win over Lumley and hometown hero Anne Gwathmey, 6/2, 6/1.

The Tuxedo Club hosted the Bostwick and Danby Cups – (Bi-Annual) International age group team competitions. The Bostwick Cup, with participants 60+ years of age, is named after former World Champion “Pete” Bostwick. The Danby Cup, with participants 70+ years of age, is named after the legendary U.K. Danby Family. The 2013 competitions featured teams from the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.Congratulations and kudos to all the teams/players that competed in the 2013 Bostwick and Danby Cups. The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed by all is a wonderful example to all players that enjoy our game. Special kudos to the victorious UK teams for their display of teamwork throughout the week, which was noticed and commented on by many in attendance.

In September, Dacre Stoker, tennis chair, took on the roleof teaching professional. In addition to teaching lessons,he has created both a winter and a summer league onMonday evenings which attracted 38 players; both eventscombined spirited play on court and jovial social activitiesoff the court. Dacre and club secretary, Lou Papouchadoinitiated an online court booking system, which has beenvery well received by tennis players.

The fall competitive season kicked off with the twelfthannual Calhoun Witham Cup in November. As in previous years, we had a sold-out field of twenty-four teams from Boston, New York, Washington, Newport, Australia, and England, as well as many Aiken players. The tournament consisted of six Divisions of four teams with each participating team being guaranteed three matches. The six divisional winners and top two other teams played in the quarterfinals followed by the top 4 moving on to the semifinals Sunday morning with the finals played at noon on Sunday.

In the quarter finals Aiken’s Robert Glance andPhiladelphia’s John Iole prevailed against Radley’s VernCassin and Sarah Backhouse 2-6, 6-5, 6-5. Aiken’s TomSwift and Francois Verglas won over Newport’s ClemNapolitano and Washington’s Martin Whitmer 6-5 6-2.Melbourne’s Bob Malseed and Newport’s Steve Devoeoutlasted Petra Napolitano and Kip Curren from Newport2-6, 6-2, 6-5. Ginny Goodyear and her son Seth Kopaldprevailed in a real nail biter with Aiken’s Jason Mengel and Robert Cook 6-5 5-6, 6-5.

This set the stage for the Sunday morning semifinals, butnot before the crowd of over one hundred were treated toa gourmet tournament dinner prepared by Chef Brandonfrom Juniper restaurant.

In the semifinals Goodyear and Kopald beat Glance andIole 6-4, 6-2, while Malseed and Devoe beat Verglas andSwift 6-2 2-6, 6-1. A brunch was served compliments ofthe Witham family after the semi finals.

The finals were played to a packed viewing room andside galleries. Ginny Goodyear and her son, Seth Kopald, prevailed in a very close back and forth match over BobMalseed from Melbourne and Steve Devoe from Newport6-5, 6-4.

Informal dinners have continued every Wednesday eveningat the Club. These are held mostly outdoors on our patio or indoors if the weather is too cold or rainy (which is not too often). Members rotate responsibilities to cook, or to bring prepared foods, to serve anywhere from eight to over twenty regulars who have come to really enjoy this event. A nice selection of wines is always served and socializing continues well into the night and sometimes spills over to nearby bars.

The Honeck Bisque Doubles, our annual intra-club teamdoubles event, held in January, is played in memory of Hank Honeck. To honor Hank’s love of the “bisque,” we utilize a bisque or a half bisque in addition to handicapping the matches. As usual, a wide variety of players participated in this spirited event. The winning team included: Robert Cook, Charlie Bostwick, Duncan Rutherfurd Jr, Ginny Goodyear, and Zach Harrington.

In April, the Knox Doubles attracted a large field of16 teams. Each team played a round robin schedule ofthree matches in four pools. The top two teams in eachpool advanced to the quarterfinal round, winners thenadvanced to the semifinals and then to the finals onSunday afternoon. As usual, the social committee, headedby Michael Sullivan, put on wonderful social and dinnerevents throughout the weekend. Spectators enjoyed manyclose matches. The first semifinal was an all Aiken event;

Clayton Vaughters and Jason Mengel ended Rakesh Jasani and Ben Cook’s quest for three consecutive Knox titles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The second semifinal was another entertaining three set match. Lex Miron and Jeremy Wintersteen defeated Morgan Purvis and Gary Swantner 6-5, 4-6, 6-3, setting up a rematch from pool play earlier in the week.

In the finals Vaughters and Mengel jumped out to anearly 5-0 lead before taking the first set 6-2. Miron andWintersteen then changed the strategy that they usedup to this point in the tournament. At the beginningof the second set, Lex moved back and Jeremy began todefend the galleries. The move paid off and they won thesecond set 6-4. The third set was a battle with Miron andWintersteen jumping out to a 4-2 lead. Vaughters andMengel dug in and came back to win three games in a row to go ahead 5-4. Experience then took over and Lex and Jeremy repeatedly found the dedans and won the next two games in spectacular fashion to claim the title 6-5 in the third set. It was a successful first trip to Aiken for Miron, and Wintersteen adds the 2013 championship to go with his victory in 2009. The galleries were constantly full and the social events were well attended. Camden Riviere and Wayne Davies were generous with their time, offering great coaching and advice in between marking matches and serving as tournament officials.

John Harte, John Haddon and Duncan Rutherfurd havereinvigorated our members by conducting teaching clinics in the little known sport of bottle pool. As a result of the

increased interest many new players have become regular players, while the more seasoned players have found good reason to dust off their cues. Club Championships are being played retroactively, Duncan Rutherfurd narrowly edged out Morgan Milner to win the 2010 Championship, 2011 and 2012 Championships will be contested later this year.

Over the past year, the Club has added six new members:Bobby Hottensen, Martin Whitmer, Tom Francoline, TomMatthews, Morgan Purvis, and Robert Glance. At thesame time we have lost a few members, which has keptour total membership at 90.0

As I write this report, it is the first day that the tennis court is closed for our long awaited roof project. By the time this goes to print, T&R will likely have a secure roof and a court suitable for tournament play. Thanks to the efforts of generous donors, the USCTA, the USCTPF, our club members and staff and the building owners, this long awaited project is finally here. Notwithstanding our leaky roof, tennis at the T&R continued to grow during the 2012-2013 tennis season. Court hours were up, a healthy number of new players stepped on court, and a number of them dropped their handicaps precipitously. While we couldn’t host any tournaments, our members stormed our sister clubs, put up the paint, and brought home the gold.

In other exciting news, Tony Hollins has joined the T&R pro shop. Tony’s hard work and great attitude had everything to do with the club’s tennis expansion. Our head pro, Jimmy Burke, after recovering from his quad muscle tear last season, had knee replacement surgery just an hour or so before the horrific Boston Marathon bombing. We trust that he will make a full recovery and be back on court this autumn. Tom Pickin did a nice job helping us out last summer, as well. As has been our custom, T&R sent a healthy contingent of players and fun-seekers to the Newport trifecta: the Handicap Doubles, the Velvet Rope, and the Pell Cup. In the Handicap, Leonard Mazzone was a finalist in the C Division. Dan Villiers won the Velvet Rope A Division, and Peter Bender took the B division. At the Pell, Matt Porter and Kip Curren won the A Division, while Arthur Drane and Paul Bolster were finalists in the C Division. Ken Forton organized the fourth annual Lakewood Invitational. This fall tennis event continues to attract

players from many courts—this year from Philadelphia, Washington, Newport, and Boston—to see Gould’s historic court and get back in the swing of things. T&R was also well represented at the International Opening of the tennis court at the Chicago Racquet Club. Arthur Drane, Jeremy Wintersteen, Suzy Schwartz, Helen Grassi, Matt Mitchell, Peter Bender, and Ken Forton made the pilgrimage, with Arthur making it to the finals of the doubles squash. Kudos to Chicago for finishing the court to such a high standard. Next up was the Jimmy Dunn: T&R sent a record contingent of 18! Bill Connors and Brad Ursprung took the C Division. Then, on to New York for the Silver Racquet and NY Open Handicaps. Jeremy Wintersteen fell to Bill Barker in a three-set nail-biter in the Silver Racquet Final.

This season’s Whitney Cup team had a rough go of it, but the boys will take the next year to rebuild and come back stronger than ever. T&R had greater success at the Patriot Cup, our annual face-off with Newport. Boston kept the Cup, with the steady leadership of Captain Arthur Drane. Newport again helped out the T&R by hosting, the Jimmy Knott, where Tom Pickin was the Finalist.

Jeremy Wintersteen was part of a three-player U.S. team that went to England in February to compete in the Bathurst Cup, a biennial competition between the U.S., England, France, and Australia. Jeremy and the other U.S. players, Ben Cook and Rakesh Jasani of Aiken, competed hard but lost to Australia in the first round. The battle for third place against the French was a close one with three of the five matches going the distance, but France prevailed in the end.

David Schenkein and Dick Brickley were our representatives in the over 50, over 55, and over 60 tournaments. At the Norty Knox in Aiken, Jeremy tried to defend his title but lost in the final. Arthur made the final of his division at the Cherry Blossom. Jeremy made it to the semifinal in the U.S. Amateur Doubles, and Suzy Schwartz made it to the semifinal in the U.S. Mixed Doubles. T&R also sent a good contingent to the U.S. Ladies Open, where Helen made it to the semis against Brit Karen Hird.

Diego Alvarado and Tom Pickin met each other in the final of the Noll Cup; Diego pulled it out 6/5, 2/6, 6/3. Andy Roberts and Dave Tedeschi went down to Aiken to contest the Greevy Cup. Dave lost to Rakesh Jasani in the final, and Andy won the back draw.

Team New England (Tony Hollins, Rich Smith, Camden Riviere) won the National League this year. Congratulations to the team! Tony Hollins had a good

tournament at the U.S. Pro Singles in Newport, winning his first two matches in the satellite round, which won him a spot in the main draw, where he had to play Cam. I’m sure next year will bring Tony much success.

The fourth season of Winter League was a huge success. Four teams and approximately sixty players participated in the team doubles handicap competition played over the winter and spring. Congratulations to Captain Eric Shabshelowitz and his team, the Bandeau Bandits, for taking the Champions Cup after an all-day finals extravaganza! Thanks go to the captains and to Tony and Jimmy for their organizing efforts.

At this writing, the T&R has 187 players with an RTO handicap, 83 of whom are active (at least one match in twelve months). 99 T&R players were USCTA members. Thanks go to our pros, Jimmy Burke and Tony Hollins, for their efforts. Our free beginner clinics continue to be a success and are introducing lots of folks to our game and making converts. Thanks go to Club Manager Tom Dobbins and Finance Manager and Masseuse Janice Pearson for all they do for the T&R Tennis Program. Thanks also go to the T&R Tennis Committee (Arthur Drane, Dick Brickley, Jimmy Burke, Tony Hollins, Ken Forton, Jeff Horine, Jeremy Wintersteen, Matt Mitchell, and Helen Grassi), chaired by Arthur Drane, and to others who help with T&R tennis throughout the year. Boston will be back on-line for the 2013-14 season, so look out for an event to officially re-open the court. Dick Brickley, Jeremy Wintersteen, Arthur Drane, and Ken Forton served on the USCTA Board: Dick and Jeremy At-Large and Arthur and Ken as Club Representatives.

The past year was memorable for court tennis in Philadelphia. When the court was not being used for the numerous national events that we hosted, our members were honing their game to a razor’s edge or, at least, having fun trying. Our professionals are the key to happiness in so many ways on and around the court. In 2012, James Asher joined us and immediately showed that his considerable squash skills would soon translate into a solid tennis game.

The season kicked off with the Jimmy Dunn, which drew a large crowd from far and wide. Head Professional Rob Whitehouse teamed with Senior Professional Gabe Kinzler and reached the finals of the Open Division. However, Barney Tanfield and Lex Miron proved to be better on that day, prevailing over the locals in a tight match. Andrew Purcell pulled a rare double, winning the A with Rich Moroscak and the B with Gary Swantner. The other division winners were Bill Connors and Brad Ursprung in the C, Brit Elmore and JP Patton in the D, and John Broussard and Scilla Smith in the E.

December brought sad news. Philadelphia lost two stalwart supporters of the game when close friends John Mirkil and E. Newbold Smith passed away within days of one another. Both men were patriarchs of prominent Philadelphia tennis families and will be remembered for their contributions to the game and the fun that they had playing it.

The best players in the world were at the Philadelphia Racquet Club in January for the US Open. Philadelphia amateurs Jon Crowell and Christian Bullitt won first round matches before losing to Steve Virgona and Camden Riviere, respectively. Gabe Kinzler provided early round excitement in the singles by beating Rich Smith. He and Rob had the closest match in the doubles where they lost a five setter to Chris Chapman and Ben Matthews. The singles final between top seeds Virgona and Riviere was a showcase of power, speed and athleticism. Camden got off to a fast start in the first set and held on to win 6-2. Steve was ahead 4-3 in the second set but unusually warm weather made the court wet and slippery. Play was halted in order to dry the court. When play resumed, Virgona had lost his momentum and quickly the second set as well. Rivere returned to his early dominance and took the third set and the match. The next day Camden and Tim Chisholm were straight set winners against Steve and

Bryn Sayers in the doubles final, 6-2,6-5,6-4.

February brought the ladies to Philly to compete in the National Mixed Doubles Championship and the Ann Boleyn. Pat Winthrop and Sara Lacombe won the Mixed in a hard-hitting match against Greg Van Schaack and Amanda Avedissian. Philadelphia’s Ruth Kelley showed that her long hours in the court had paid off as she bested Francine Royan to take the Boleyn. Philadelphia also hosted the Wharton Cup, a handicap event for players with handicaps in the 50’s. It was an all-Philadelphia final with Chris Bernabei coming out on top of Joe Spera.

For many players, the highlight of the tennis season in Philadelphia is the Lord Percival Cup held annually over St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Thanks to some hard work by tournament organizer Jim Zug, the Percy had its biggest field in many years. Every club but two fielded a team and Washington and New York sent two teams. The two Washington teams ended up in the final and JP Patton’s squad emerged victorious.

Philadelphia hosted an international seniors event in May as teams from England, Australia and the US competed for the Cockram Cup. The US team consisted of Peter Hill, Steve Hufford, Simon Aldrich, Ted Manges, Alan McHugh, Tom Wilson, John Madzin and Peter Vogt. England proved too strong and coasted to victory, and Australia prevailed over the US for second place.

The final national event on the schedule in Philadelphia was the National Juniors in June. Erik Barker from Washington was the winner in the under 18 division, while Philadelphian Patrick Monaghan won the under 21. In the doubles, it was Ben Boddington and Barker victorious over Sam Gerson and Monaghan in the under 21 and Evan McDonnell and Barker beat Frank

McDermott and Drew Callahan in the finals of the under 18. The Club championships saw some familiar names enjoying success. Jon Crowell successfully defended two titles. He won the doubles with Christian Bullitt by beating PJ Yeatman and Drew McGowan and won over Peter Hill in the singles. Experience trumped youth in an exciting ladies singles final as Kathy Carson beat Ruth Kelley in three sets. Carson also won the mixed doubles title with Peter Vogt over Sandy Leighton and Kelley. The full list of club tournament winners is set forth below.

Thanks are due to our outstanding professionals and our hard-working Tennis Committee. We were sad to see Gabe Kinzler leave us at the end of the season and thank him for all of his good work here. We are excited about John Lumley joining us in the fall. Next season in Philadelphia we will be hosting the US Amateur and the Noll Cup, as well as our normal full schedule of events such as the Dunn and the Irish. Hope to see you here!

New York The Racquet & Tennis Club’s outstanding professionals, Mike Gooding, James Stout and Barney Tanfield, once again led club to another outstanding season. The Club hosted the following USCTA events during the 2012 – 2013 season:

DATE EVENT DRAW(S)

November 8 – 11 Silver Racquet Amateur SinglesNew York Open Handicap A, B, & C SinglesDecember 9 – 11 Whitney Cup Amateur Doubles May 18 – 24 World Masters 2013 Over 50 Singles & Doubles Over 55 Singles & Doubles Over 60 Singles & Doubles Over 65 Singles & Doubles Over 70 Singles & Doubles Over 75 Singles & Doubles

In addition to these events the Racquet and Tennis Club hosted the USCTA Annual Dinner and Auction in conjunction with the Whitney Cup.

Silver RacquetThe New York Racquet & Tennis Club hosted the Silver Racquet Invitational and New York Open Handicap on November 8-11. In conjunction with the tennis, the club hosted an invitational squash doubles tournament, paired doubles racquets, and U.S. Amateur Racquets (singles and doubles). Throughout a busy weekend of great sport, the club executed equally brilliant social events. A strong racquets and tennis contingent decorated the 60 strong stag dinner on Thursday night and carried on through with more than 400 glittering others to Saturday night’s exceptional Fall Dinner Dance.

The tennis events featured 62 players competing in four draws, the Silver Racquet Invitational and the A, B, and C flights of the NY Open Handicaps. In the Invitational, eight players vied for the title which was bound to have a new champion for the first time in three years. Early round play warmed up the semifinalists for each of Saturday’s thrilling three set semifinal matches. Lex Miron (NY) and Bill Barker (DC) went to battle first. Barker’s great gets and hard volleys dispatched Miron’s measured length and precision targeting in the first set. Miron’s movement improved with his shot selection as he leveled the match in the second set.

Barker was relentless in the decisive third set, winning timely deuce games and a berth in the finals. The second semifinal pitted Danny McBride (DC) against Jeremy Wintersteen (BOS by way of ME). A familiar position for last year’s semifinalist, Wintersteen shook off McBride’s good play in the first set and leveled the match at one set all with his characteristic steadiness. Wintersteen carried momentum best in the latter part of the third set and came away victorious. The Barker VS Wintersteen final was another three set epic. Wintersteen got off to a good start on the service end and took the first set. Barker followed with effective angles in the second set, pushing the match to a final set. The third set provided for some great tennis; Barker and Wintersteen seemed to test each other with every ball, probing for weakness and finding only rarely small openings. The set trudged to five games all but Barker held firm and prevailed in the final game for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-5 victory.

New York Open HandicapThe NY Open Handicaps included 60 players across three flights. In the A finals, Zach Sacks (NY) upset the current World Rackets Champion James Stout (8-3). In the B finals, Tom McGinnis (NY) defeated Arthur Whitcomb (NY) in a close battle of sparring partners (8-6). In the C finals, the squash doubles maven, Matt Sharnoff (NY) upended Adrian Camacho’s (DC) run to the finals (8-3).

Whitney CupThe Whitney Cup once again attracted the top amateurs in the country and featured spectacular play, exceptional performances and exciting, close matches. An exciting change from prior years was the inclusion of The Racquet Club of Chicago which teamed up with Tuxedo. Consistent with the format that has been in place since

moving the event from Greentree to New York, the six teams were split into two groups vying for a place in the finals.

Group 1 consisted of Washington, Tuxedo-Chicago and New York. New York (2011 Champions) won this group with a 3-2 victory over Washington and a 4-1 victory over Tuxedo-Chicago.

Group 2 consisted of Greentreee-Aiken, Philadelphia and New England (2011 Finalists). Greentreee-Aiken dispatched a 4-1 beating to Philadelphia. Greentree-Aiken also defeated New England in a very close 3-2 match.

In the early stages of the finals it appeared New York was in control with leads in both the Seniors and #4 matches. The tide turned quickly and violently as Greentree-Aiken gained control and took both matches making every match a must win for New York for the remainder of the day. New York’s #1 was next on and made quick work of their opponents. The #2 match followed with much anticipation. New York’s #2 team dug in after an unexpected loss on Saturday to level the overall match at 2 all. In the final match New York raced to a 6-1 lead. The second set was fiercely competitive but New York proved to be just strong enough to secure as second title in as many years.

World Masters 2013The World Masters featured strong play and a robust international field: 18 players from Australia, 16 from the United Kingdom and 19 from the United States. It included many old friends and served as a reminder of the richness of our tight-knit, global community.

The most riveting match was the Over 50 Doubles final. Mike Happell (AUS) & John Prenn (U.K.) faced off

against Mark Nicholls (U.K.) & Simon Aldrich (U.S.). A surprisingly easy 6/0 first set win for Happell & Prenn left us wondering if this match would disappoint. But Nicholls & Aldrich regrouped, adjusted and captured a nail-biting second set, 6/4. The third set was equally gripping: back and forth until 3-all. But Happell & Prenn elevated their play, won a close seventh game and then went on roll to take the set, 6/3.

Other winners: Happell, Over 50 Singles; Prenn, Over 55 Singles; Prenn & Nicholls, Over 55 Doubles; Prenn, Over 60 Singles; Tim Hurburgh (AUS) & Wayne Spring (AUS), Over 60 Doubles; Graeme Holloway (AUS), Over 65 Singles; Holloway & John Faul (AUS), Over 65 Doubles; John Ward (UK), Over 70 Singles; Hurburgh & Paul Wheeler (AUS), Over 70 Doubles; John McLean (U.S.), Over 75 Singles; Wheeler & Bob Malseed (AUS), Over 75 Doubles

We would like to thank our professionals Mike Gooding (head), James Stout and Barney Tanfield. Our thanks also go to all members who contribute to make our tournaments and programs run successfully.

It has been a remarkable year at the Racquet Club of Chicago. There have been so many people who have worked tirelessly to restore the court, and we are truly delighted to be back as part of the court tennis community. It has been a great honor for us to welcome Steve Virgona to the club as our new tennis professional. He has made a superb start in Chicago and, along with head professional John Cashman, has been responsible for rapidly developing our new program. The first balls were struck on August 1st and from that point onwards the court has seen incredibly high usage. A huge number of our members have quickly become hooked on the game and court hours have rapidly surpassed all our expectations.

We staged our members’ opening of the court on 20th September and we were privileged that Rob Fahey, Claire Vigrass, Freddy Adam and James Stout were able to join our celebrations. Rob and Claire took on Freddy and Steve in an entertaining mixed doubles game before we were treated to the marvelous spectacle of Rob and Steve playing singles. We were also fortunate to simultaneously be able to enjoy a rackets exhibition between current World Champion, James Stout, and our own rackets professional, Will Hopton. This series of amazing matches was preceded by the 2012 Club Championships Finals. The months of August and September saw the first Racquet Club Tennis Championships in Chicago since 1932 being played out. The entry for the singles had over 60 players and there were 25 teams in the doubles draw. In the singles final John Prenn emerged victorious over Marty Kinsella and he then teamed up with Rick Durkes to defeat Marty and Kirk Baldwin in the doubles. All 300 members and their guests who were in attendance gathered on the court once the play was done for the evening in order for an historic photo to be taken. Everyone then descended to the first floor to enjoy a splendid dinner during which the club president, Bill Bickford, and the Chairman of the USCTPF, Haven Pell, spoke very eloquently about the magnificent achievement of restoring the court.

The Racquet Club then opened its doors to welcome tennis players from across the world to our International Opening weekend (25th-28th October). It proved to be

an extremely special four days during which the members were able to celebrate with the whole tennis community. We were very fortunate that former World Champions Pete Bostwick, Howard Angus and Chris Ronaldson along with current Champion Rob Fahey were with us for the weekend. Our Pro Shop team expertly ran 3 divisions of tennis draws in addition to rackets and doubles squash tournaments. The A category was won by Peter Pell and William Maltby, in the B division Mike Keiser and Nick Manby-Brown emerged victorious and the C Champions were Bill Bickford and Max Drake. On the social front many of the participants attended a fantastic Thursday buffet before everyone enjoyed a cocktail reception on Friday evening and finally a spectacular Saturday dinner/dance at which many of the visiting clubs generously presented gifts to the club in recognition of the restoration. The festivities officially ended after the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon but due to Hurricane Sandy battering the East Coast many people were unable to return home for a number of days. We were delighted that many of our visitors continued to play on the court and continued to enjoy being in Chicago well into the following week!

We hosted our first USCTA event in mid-January as players from all over the country joined us for the Etchebaster Cup. The final was a superb match in which Chicago’s Marty Kinsella overcame John Saxe from Washington in a tight 3 setter. The back draw resulted in an all Chicago final and after an epic battle Graham Bayly squeezed by Ken Love. A few weeks later the Burke

Cup came to town and it was a great privilege to welcome Boston’s head professional Jimmy Burke for the weekend. Our own Racquet Club players were once again to the fore as Baker Thompson battled past Jack Brown in a pulsating final. However, Peter Bender defended the out-of-towners honor by besting Ally Bulley in the Consolation final. We very much enjoyed putting on these two events and are thoroughly looking forward to featuring many times on the USCTA schedule in seasons to come. The members were also royally entertained by three first class National League matches this season as Steve Virgona and Will Hopton faced off against visiting teams from New York, Tuxedo/Philadelphia and New England. The standard in all of these contests was extremely high and it was a pleasure to watch the game being played at such a level.

John Prenn graciously decided not to defend his Club Championship during 2013 and therefore many local Chicagoans fancied their chances of being immortalized in gold paint! There were numerous tightly fought matches including two excellent semi-finals where Marty Kinsella overcame Kirk Baldwin and Jack Brown defeated Rowan Carroll. The dedans and side galleries were full of enthusiastic supporters for the final in which Marty recovered from dropping the first set to come through in three. It was wonderful to see two members playing so well after only nine months of playing the game. Dick Ryan and Francis Freeman beat off all the competition to become Club Handicap Doubles champions and Brad Schwalm/Webber Scott are due to meet to decide the Handicap Singles crown.

It certainly has been a whirlwind season but we are all so excited in Chicago to be back on the tennis map. The court continues to be booked solid even as summer is finally upon us and we are eagerly anticipating the start of the new season in the fall.

The views through the glass wall at Prince’s Court were exceptional this year. We enjoyed seeing Chris Ronaldson overcome Barry Toates 6/4 3/6 6/5 in a classic exhibition match in October. An enthusiastic crowd cheered a great evening of National League competition between Chicago and New England in January. Gabe Kinzler and Steve Virgona, representing Chicago, and Rich Smith and Camden Riviere, from New England, played some amazing matches, and all spectators experienced a level of play rarely seen in Washington.

We hosted the Hickey Cup (handicap 60+ level singles) in February, which former Prince’s Court President Chris Hughey won in straight sets over fellow Prince’s Court member Chase Motz. We also hosted the U.S. Amateur tournament in March, in which many local players, most notably Danny McBride, were unable to deter the singular focus of Pat Winthrop, as Pat went on to retain his title, defeating Danny in the finals. The doubles contest came down to an exciting all-Washington final, with Bill Barker and Neil MacKenzie clinching a tight four-set match against Bradley Allen and Danny McBride.

In April, Prince’s Court hosted its annual Cherry Blossom tournament. This year’s “Lucky 13” theme included tennis-themed gambling, antique bingo boards, and a night of bowling at D.C. hotspot Lucky Strikes. As usual, Ryan Carey’s mad genius in running the tournament was matched only by his exuberance on court. Ryan and Pat Winthrop were rewarded for their extraordinary play when they defeated Camden Riviere (off-handed) and Phil Shannon in the Masters Division. Also notable was the victory in the Wishbone division by first-time Cherry Blossomers Erik Barker and Chase Motz. Prince’s Court welcomed guests from around the nation and the world, many of whom stayed with members of the club. We extend a warm reinvitation to our out of town guests, as well as our thanks to our members who billeted them.

As usual, Prince’s Court members also went on the road to compete against the best. Our juniors traveled in October to compete in the 12 and Under and 15 and Under championships. Erik Barker defeated Chase Motz in the 12 and Under Singles, and they teamed up together to win the 12 and Under Doubles. Erik also won the 15 and Under Singles and teamed with Will

Harkins to defeat Motz & Arthur Browne in the doubles.

November’s Jimmy Dunn tournament always draws a good number of Washington players, and this year was no exception. Rich Moroscak teamed with Andrew Purcell to capture the A level trophy, and Ryan Carey and Kris Motz won the A level consolation crown. In the D level, Britt Elmore and John Patton III took the trophy, and Temple Grassi paired with Kathy Carson to win the consolation.

In December, our Whitney Cup players welcomed Vu Hoang to the squad, where his doubles play and patented tambour-climb contributed greatly to Washington’s competitiveness. Bradley Allen won the Gold Racquets tournament in Tuxedo in February.

Sara Lacombe teamed with Pat Winthrop in February to win the U.S. Mixed Doubles Crown, and Adrian Camacho won the Noll Cup backdraw, for handicaps 30-39, in March. Ryan Carey teamed with Philadelphia swashbuckler Gary Swantner to win the Norty Knox in Aiken.

We also sent two very strong teams to compete for the Lord Percival Cup in Philadelphia in March. After a series of very close matches, both teams squeaked through to an all-Washington final. Washington’s Ryan Carey, Mark Philpott; John Patton III, Vern Cassin; Britt Elmore, and Yiannis Mostrous emerged victorious two matches to one over Vu Hoang, Charlie Katz; Matt Fraidin, Adrian Camacho; Greg Faron, and Billy Duvall.

Most of our 2013 club championships are still in contention, with competitive draws in all brackets. The play among friends has been spirited. The Van Alen Cup (men’s level doubles) was won once again by Rich Moroscak and Bill Barker. Phil Shannon handily won the Price Cup (handicap 20+ level singles) in February in a straight-set finals victory. Sara Lacombe remains our unchallenged Ladies Champion. The other local crowns are still in contention approaching season’s end.

Prince’s Court supported Ryan Carey in his efforts to go 12 rounds for charity on 12/12/12 as he outlasted all competitors (and partners) and proved his endurance by playing from dawn to dusk. With a little help from his friends (Mostrous, Katz, Hoang, Moroscak, J. Motz, K. Motz, T. Motz, Grassi, Shannon, Homer, Carlson, Cassin, Donovan, Gordon, Fraidin, McCray, Camacho, Patton, and more), Ryan played for over 12 straight hours and fostered significant contributions to some worthy charities.

The surroundings of the club were much improved through the generosity of Temple and Ellie Grassi, who, along with other donors, replaced the sixteen year old furniture in the viewing areas. Cecilia Forbes dedicated her time and skill to selecting the furniture. Haven Pell orchestrated the replacement of the tattered flags above the side penthouse, hit by far too many stray balls during the last 16 years.

Throughout the year, our visiting Washington “interns” Lewis Williams, Ben Boddington, and Neil Mackenzie consistently brought their energy, enthusiasm, and additional capabilities to the club. Adrian Camacho provided outstanding assistance both in the pro shop and on court. All members appreciate their many contributions to the Prince’s Court community.

We wish a fond farewell to departing President Chris Hughey, as he leaves for a two-year posting with the State Department in Brazil. His vacancy will be filled by two members. Temple Grassi’s longstanding role as ambassador to the world will be formalized as he assumes the role of Chairman of Prince’s Court, while Vern Cassin will take on the role of President.

With more play on the way, good changes ahead, and a demonstrated ability to hold fast to that which is good, we look forward to our next year!

2012-2013 Annual Report

Thanks in large part to the opening of the Chicago court and the attendant enthusiasm of the Chicago members for the game, the number of USCTA members grew to 804 in 2012-2013. This is an all-time high for USCTA membership and an increase of nearly a hundred members from last year.

There are currently 778 USCTA members who are in the RTO handicap system, 716 men and 62 women. Of those, 50 do not have a current handicap. For the other 728 members, the handicap breakdown is as follows:

Handicap Number 0-19.9 33 20-29.9 83 30-39.9 129 40-49.9 178 50-59.9 159

60-69.9 84 70-79.9 47 80+ 15

Our membership dues and the proceeds from our auction are the primary source of the revenue that funds the operation of the USCTA. So, with your help, we are able to publish this Annual Report and the monthly newsletter Chase The First; maintain a website at www.uscourttennis.org.; provide prize money for our professionals and medals for our amateurs; and support the development of junior players and the game in general. This year the USCTA also provided funds to Boston to help with its court renovation project. None of this would have been possible without your dues and other generous contributions. Thank you for your support.

In the past, the period of your annual USCTA membership has coincided with the playing season so that memberships expired in June. However, this caused problems as far as determining eligibility for early season USCTA tournaments because many clubs did not bill USCTA dues until after the season had started. To solve this problem, USCTA memberships will now expire at the end of the calendar year. So, when you pay your dues in the fall of 2013, your membership allows you to participate in USCTA events up until December 31, 2014. This will allow you to pay your dues when your club bills you in the fall without concern that your membership has lapsed.

Please encourage beginning players at your club to join the USCTA. We thank you for your continued interest and support. We look forward to seeing you on the courts and at some of our many functions throughout the year.

Respectfully submitted,

Peter A. Vogt

UNITED STATES COURT TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Annual Report2012-2013

C H I C A G O

Haven has stepped down as Chairman of the

United States Court Tennis Preservation Foundation

to pursue a sixth career as a writer/blogger --

www.libertyPell.com (irreverent look at US politics)

and www.WellPlayed.US (the games we play and how

they shape the lives we lead) -- with our thanks

for three decades of looking after court tennis.
