Provide a short description of actions taken at the international level to promote participation by CSOs and STIs in the Convention processes or any other complementary information.

Switzerland has a long history of strong collaboration with CSOs on local levels and STIs. SDC certainly has comparative advantages in the field of assisting and building of CSOs and CSO networking at all levels. Within a partnership approach, networks between CSOs and STIs are created and further developed. Examples for this are the following project: DRYNET, as a direct application to contribute to the implementation of the UNCCD together with DRYNET partners and teams, the ILC International Land Coalition, or WOCAT World Overview of conservation Approaches and Technologies that tackle SLM in different social and scientific networks and programmes and directly interact with local land users, or in water and land projects in different regions that work with user organizations (WUAs in Kenya, Central Asia etc.) or farmers associations (Africa). Public private partnership is a strong element in the development collaboration approach of SDC.

Proposal for a more stringent bi-annual reporting structure: For some of the indicators we do not have information aggregated by year, hence numbers, data, incidents are the same as they are on-going for both years. ==> Given a bi-annual reporting period, it would be preferable to only report data for the whole period and not to differ between years. This is especially important as reporting activities logically start with getting an overview on the projecs for the UFAs. For UFAs, data on both years is combined. But for filling in the information for the CONS, data again has to be separated per year ==> this means that reporting officers again have to go deeply back into the projects' data base. A specific example for this is CONS-O-3: In the UFA, information of STIs and CSOs is combined in one column and on a bi-annual base. In the CONS-O-3, STIs and CSOs have to be listed separately and even separated per year...!.... Proposal for the reporting procedure: From a reporting officers' point of view, the best way is to start with collecting the list of projects. This means to first ask institutions to name relevant projects and at the same time, to provide the info on the necessary reporting indicators that they may already have in their SAP/OECD/etc. data bases. (collecting project credit proposals and reports is buiding on that...) To optimise the use of existing data bases from the very beginning, a reporting officer has to be very clear on what all he/she needs to fill in both, the UFA and CONS templates. ==> Preferably, a excel-list could be provided as a working instrument for the reporting officer. This

excel-list should cover all the necessary columns for the UFA and also the CONS (as far as they are connected to project data)! Such an excel-list serves best as working instrument in collecting and also in uploading country data. It provides a good overview on a country-scale, and allows to easily compare data from different reporting exercices. Additional thought: Uploading data in the given system is time-consuming. Nevertheless, there seems to be no way around that (?) as it is necessary for the statistical account. Unfortunatley, this format is also not very 'reader-friendly' - it does ot allow an interested public to get an easy insight into another countries activities. A stringent composition and collection of countries' excel-files as proposed above would allow to uplod them on the PRAIS webpage
