The chart below shows the progress you can make with

a Kaplan language course. On arrival at your school you

will be given a profi ciency test to enable our staff to place

you in the correct class for your level of language ability.

Regular progress tests during the course will then allow

your teachers to monitor your level of improvement.

Typically, students on an Intensive English course take

just ten weeks to progress from one language level to

the next.

Elementary

You can use and recognise common words,

greetings, and simple instructions, but you

have limited grammatical knowledge.

Lower Intermediate

You can write and speak in familiar situations

and have a fair knowledge of grammar, but

your vocabulary is limited.

Intermediate

You can talk about everyday matters, but with

a limited range of style and expression. You

read and write fl uently about familiar topics.

Higher Intermediate

You are competent with grammar and

can understand and contribute to most

conversations on familiar topics, but may

make some mistakes.

Advanced

You communicate confi dently and fl uently,

but may lack specialist vocabulary and make

some errors with complex language.

Profi ciency

You are very close to native speaker fl uency

and can handle all complex written and
