WATCHKEEPING



The day at sea is

generally divided into 4-hour(or 6-hour) periods

called watches.



Watches are kept

on the bridge,

in the engine room

radio room

while navigating, lying off or atport



Watchkeeping on the

bridge

The officer of watch is the

master’s representative andis responsible for the safe

navigation of the ship during

the watch.



The officer of watch is in

charge of bridge and bridgewatchkeeping team.



The duties of the officer of

watch are;

navigation

maintaining a lookout andgeneral surveillance of the

ship

avoiding collision



recording bridge activitiesand making periodic checks

pollution prevention,reporting and emergency

situationscargo monitoring



the control and supervision of

machinery and ship safety

systems

displaying the correct lights and

making the correct sound andlight signals.



The officer of watch should always take

an early and positive action to avoid

collision in compliance with regulationsfor preventing collision at sea.



The risk of collision should be detected

early by taking frequent bearings of an

approaching vessel to ensure thevessel is not on a collision course.

Assessing risk of collision in restricted

visibility is done by radar.



It is important that a proper

and formal record of navigational activities is kept

in logbooks



The officer of watch should

undertake daily tests and

checks on the bridge equipment

such as manual steering, gyro

and magnetic compass errors.



The officer of watch should

notify the master when in any

doubt as to what action to take

relevant to navigation and

safety.



Watchkeeping

in the engine room

Watchkeeping system in the

engine room can be either

normal watchkeeping or

unmanned.



The relieving engineer of watch controls

the data and conditions in the engine

room such as all auxiliary machinery,temperatures, in the exhaust and

cylinder cooling system, the levels in

service tanks before taking over the

watch.
