Teaching notesAbout this unitHealth and safety is a huge topic to tackle – as anyone who has readthrough a copy of the Health and Safety at Work documentation will testify!The objective of the unit is to provide enough evidence for the students togain competency within fairly narrow parameters.
Try to remember that it is the health, safety and security of the salonenvironment (linking with the safe use of salon products, tools andequipment) that is the subject here, and keep within that.
AssessmentThe assessments for this unit have been indexed on the evidence sheet. Forboth written and practical assessments, however, check with your awardingbody to ensure all ranges have been covered.
Written papersThere are four written papers for this unit:
Paper 1: Hazards recognition chart – students must identify any potentialhazards within the salon and how they can be avoided, contained or dealtwith. Examples could include spillage, environmental factors and unsafebehaviour etc.
Paper 2: Legislation – students must research the topics under the relevantheadings to prove their understanding of the specified legislations.
Paper 3: COSHH product chart – this gives an example of a manufacturer’sdatasheet to show students the information required for products used inthe salon. A blank sheet is supplied for students to research a product andrecord their findings.
Paper 4: Fire extinguisher recognition chart – students need to identify thedifferent types of fire extinguishers and what types of fire they should andshould not be used for.
ActivitiesTasks are provided to cover the requirements of performance criteria, rangestatements or essential knowledge and understanding that cannot always bedirectly observed during practical assessments.
Activity 1 – Health and safety in your training establishment – the studentneeds to research the persons responsible for health and safety in theworkplace and to identify the location of the first aid box and list itscontents, reporting if any items are missing. This is to make the studentsaware of personnel contactable in an emergency and addressesperformance criteria 1a of unit G1.
Activity 2 – Potential hazards – students are asked to identify potential hazards from a picture of a salon.
Other evidence – Accredited prior learning (APL)Other evidence may be accredited prior learning (APL) from the student’s workplace: for example, if they haveattended fire training and a health and safety induction within their employment induction. It may not even bewithin a salon environment – it could be a retail outlet, or nursing home – it will have to be in the form of awritten statement, signed and dated by a manager or someone in a supervisory capacity.
Practical assessments The salon manager’s roleEach student needs to be ‘in charge’ of the rest of the group during a practical workshop; this can provideevidence for Units G1, G4, G5, G6 and G8. The salon manager duty report sheet can record all the duties thestudent needs to manage: for example, setting up, getting equipment required for each assessment, instructingthe stylists about working areas being safe, tidying and liaising with the receptionist. An initial ‘staff meeting’before the session and a feedback overview at the end of the session will also cover Key Skills communicationlevel 2 and help towards Unit G8 (Developing effective teamwork).
The students need to take part in an evacuation of the building. Most establishments hold a regular fire drill,but simulation is acceptable. The date, time and incident can then be discussed as a topic and recorded asevidence in the workbook. Ideally, the simulation should be carried out during a client treatment session, as thestudents need to know how to deal with potential problems, such as overprocessing chemical treatmentsbecause of the evacuation.
Spillage can also be a practical assessment or simulation of talcum powder, water, shampoo, perm lotion etc.being spilt on the floor. In the event of potential danger the student must alert others, isolate the spillage anddeal with it, in the correct manner and then record it in the workbook as evidence.
An example of an accident report form is also included in this unit. This could be completed after a simulationof an accident involving small groups of students. It must, however, be completed as fully and accurately as itwould be in the event of a real accident.
ProjectThe following is a suggestion for a project you could undertake with your students for this unit:
• Identify potential hazards within your workplace and reduce the risks to health and safety. The students arerequired to produce a written statement of how they have dealt with hazards in order to prevent them frombecoming a risk.
Other resourcesA number of other resources are provided:
• Word-buster quiz – Split the group into two teams and elect a team captain as spokesperson (otherwiseeveryone shouts at once!). You are the quiz master and ask questions of each team in turn. If a wronganswer is given, the opposing team can answer the question. The triangles need to be blocked out on thegrid (in team colours) as questions are answered correctly.
• Word searches –Two word searches are provided. The first word search asks the student to find the wordssupplied in the grid. The grid could be copied onto an OHT for use with the class group. The second wordsearch asks the students to answer questions and then find the answer to the question, which is hidden inthe grid.
• Revision quiz – A quiz that students can do to recap on the knowledge acquired throughout the unit.
Multiple-choice questionsThe multiple-choice questions can be used for revision or, if taken under assessment conditions, they can beused as evidence. They generate good discussion points if used as revision. However, as there is a ‘probabilityfactor’ in students getting them right, they also test the students’ knowledge base.

Hazards recognition chartAccidents can and do happen, and so everyone should be aware of the health and safety implications of hazardsin the working environment.
As part of his or her own personal professional responsibility, the hairdresser needs to be able to recognise whena hazard can be dealt with immediately or when help may be needed, in which case the hazard should bereported to a supervisor/lecturer/technician or the salon’s manager.

Accident report formIf an accident occurs, it must be reported. This is done by completing an accident report form. This isnecessary should there be a claim for personal injury compensation at a later date. The form should becompleted by the injured party. If this is not possible, or in the case of people aged less than 18 years, the formshould be completed by the person making the report. If more than one person was injured, complete aseparate form for each person.
Completing and signing this form does not constitute an admission of liability of any kind, either by the personmaking the report or any other person.

Task

Legislation1 Employees have a responsibility to take care of themselves, colleagues and clients and to co-operate with
their employers. Employers should provide safe systems of working.
2 The COSHH regulations state that products should be stored, handled and disposed of according to theCOSHH guidelines and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Teaching notesAbout this unitThis is probably the first unit in which your students will actually get hands-on experience. It is vital that students learn the important skill of consultingwith their clients to determine their ideas and requirements. Being able tomake suitable recommendations on the basis of this information and theresults of hair, skin and scalp analyses is an essential part of this unit.
7.1 Identify what clients wantWithin this element, students have to listen, effectively communicate ideas,clarify, encourage client participation and correctly identify both new andregular clients’ needs. This is not an easy task for many students. Althoughthis will mainly be assessed by direct observation, evidence of theconsultation must be authenticated by a client signature to say they werehappy with the treatment received. As the consultation is so important, wehave included several consultation worksheets for practice. We have alsohighlighted communication within this element, as we often find somestudents initially have difficulty communicating with clients and thisbenefits from discussion.
7.2 Analyse the hair, skin and scalpAgain, this element is usually assessed by direct observation and theindividual clients’ consultation/analysis sheet produces evidence. Thestudent must have the underpinning knowledge of hair and skin tests andincompatibility of previous services and products used, to enable them tocorrectly carry out any tests that are necessary for the client. Students mustalso be able to recognise certain adverse hair, skin and scalp conditions,including infections and infestations. Some students may never come acrossa client with an infestation of head lice, so these ranges can be covered bywritten evidence or the recognition of these conditions from photographs.However, if they do come across these conditions in the salon, they mustknow how to deal with it and to whom they should report the problem.
7.3 Advise your client and agree services and productsThis element deals with being able to make recommendations that aresuitable for and meet the needs of the client. Students must have theinformation they need to be able to give clients the correct cost and durationof any treatments discussed. They also need to be able to complete clients’records accurately and keep them up to date. All advice needs to becommunicated in a manner that maintains goodwill, trust and confidentiality.

A written assessment and essential knowledge record sheet is provided for you to record the outcomes of writtenassessments.
ActivitiesActivity 1 – Communication – this is designed to make students think about their body language and differentways to communicate with clients.
Activity 2 – Skin test – this covers the range statement of ‘skin test’ and is useful to record an observed skin test;it can be placed in the student’s portfolio as evidence.
Activity 3 – Incompatibility test – this covers the range statement of ‘incompatibility test’ and is useful for eithera practice test during a lesson or as a record of an observed test.
Activity 4 – Hair test
Activity 5 – After-care advice – this asks students to think about the after-care advice that they feel is importantto give to clients.
Activity 6 – Contraindications – this asks the student to document the advice they would give if they found aninfection and infestation. If the answers are correct this can be marked and used as evidence in the student’sportfolio.
Activity 7 – Styling equipment – students need to look at styling equipment and record which hair type eachpiece of equipment is suitable for use on. They also need to identify what advice they would give to clients tohelp in the use of the equipment.
Activity 8 – Data protection – students need to demonstrate their knowledge of the Data Protection Act. It canbe used for revision purposes or can be used as in-house assessment to place in their portfolio of evidence.
Other evidenceAnalysis and consultation record sheet – this is a useful sheet for recording information on consultation,products used and processes carried out. Once completed this can be kept in the student’s portfolio asevidence. The client’s reference number must be entered so that the external verifier can cross refer to theclient record card, where the test should also be recorded.
ProjectThe project for this unit requires students to design a leaflet giving after-care advice.

Teaching notesAbout this unitEverybody shampoos their own hair and therefore it can be classed as arelatively simple task. We have found that students are often amazedinitially at how awkward it can be to shampoo and condition a client’s hair,choose the correct products, get the temperature satisfactory, use the correctmassage movements and talk to the client without getting them wet!!
AssessmentEvidence for Unit H9 is gained through written papers, multiple-choicequestions, practical application and simulation.
Written papersYour awarding body may supply suggested written papers, which willinclude questions relating to the anatomy and physiology required for thehair and skin structures. The labelling of each of the layers of the hair andskin is important to show the student’s understanding of how they areaffected during shampooing and conditioning. It is also important for thestudents to be able to identify the underlying bones for when they startmassage of the scalp. They should understand about the occipital area andhow it differs from client to client.
Other written papers for this unit need to show an understanding of healthand safety during shampooing and conditioning, shampoo and conditionertypes and their effects on the hair and massage techniques and their effectson the hair and scalp.
Students also need to understand about hygiene and be able to recognisecontraindications. Refer back to Unit G7: Consultation and analysis for thenecessary information on disorders and diseases of the hair and scalp.
There are three written papers for this unit:
Paper 1: Safety regulations – students must investigate the legislation listedand explain their responsibilities under these Acts with regards toshampooing and conditioning.
Paper 2: Shampooing – students are asked to answer questions about theuse of and effects of different types of shampoo and massage techniques onthe hair and scalp.
Paper 3: Conditioning – students are now asked similar questions aboutconditioning.
ActivitiesTasks are provided to cover the requirements of performance criteria, rangestatements or essential knowledge and understanding that cannot always bedirectly observed during practical assessments.
Activity 1 – Consultation and analysis for shampooing – this is an analysis and consultation sheet that helps thestudent to understand the importance of carrying out an analysis and consultation prior to shampooing andconditioning. With the students in pairs, give one the role of stylist and the other the role of client. Clients haveto be “proper” clients and not interfere! The stylist then has the task of gowning and consulting the client,analysing their hair and scalp and then carrying out shampooing and conditioning.
Activity 2 – Shampoo product knowledge – students are asked to investigate the different types of shampoo usedin their training salon. They also need to identify the benefits of each type of shampoo.
Activity 3 – Conditioning product knowledge – this is similar to the shampoo product knowledge activity in thatit gets students to investigate the conditioners used their training salon.
Activity 4 – Health and safety (COSHH) – students need to investigate the Control of Substances Hazardous toHealth Regulations 1992 in order to answer the questions. They need to see the relevance of the Act to theireveryday work.

Shampooing1 Effleurage is a smoothing stroking movement, which starts and ends the massage routine. It is used to apply
and spread the shampoo. Effleurage is a relaxing movement.
2 The rotary massage technique is when you use round, circular movements with the pads of the fingers. Itstimulates the scalp and removes dirt and grease.
3 When shampooing before a perm or semi-permanent colour, you should use a soapless base shampoo withno additives. This is so that there is no barrier left on the hair from the shampoo, which could stop theperm or colour from taking.
4 When massaging a client with long hair you should use mainly effleurages, especially on the lengths of thehair. This will help prevent tangling and knotting. The rotary movement can also be used on the scalp butremove the hands if your fingers get tangled.
5 When massaging a client with dense hair you may need to apply more pressure so that the massage isstimulating and beneficial to the client. Remove your hands, one at a time, if your fingers get tangled.
