Unit 9: The Great Depression and The New Deal

Georgia Performance Standard SS8H8:c. Discuss the impact of the political career of Eugene Talmadged. Discuss the effect of the New Deal in terms of impact of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Agricultural Adjustment Act, Rural Electrification, and Social Security.

1920’s in USA

• WWI ended in 1918.Our side won! Our economy was high.

• 18th amendment was passed= prohibition (no alcohol in USA)

• 19th amendment was passed= suffrage movement (women can vote)

1920’s in GA

• Kaolin was a major mining industry and is still today! Kaolin is a white clay that is masked into a powder. It is found in GA and used in toothpaste, plastic, paper, etc…

• William Hartsfield convinced people in Atlanta to invest money in an airport for Atlanta.

THEN, WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?

• Drought and the Dust Bowl over most over USA cause crops to die and people to lose homes/money/land.

• The boll weevil beetle (bug) spread over GA and the South. It destroyed many crops, including cotton.

• The boll weevil and the drought caused people to lose money and the economy to drop.

The Great Depression 1929-1941

• 1929-1941: USA’s economy dropped for many reasons. This time period is called The Great Depression.

• The president from 1929-1933 was Herbert Hoover. He angered people because he did not create enough programs to help during The Depression.

• The next president from 1933-1945 was Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). He created many programs to help Americans called The New Deal.

Causes of Great Depression:

• Stock Market Crash• Some prices of goods

cost too much (people could not afford it).

• Some prices cost too little (no profit for businesses).

• Too much debt

• Banks were not supervised by government.

• Government did not pay attention to the problems until it was bad.

• Boll weevil and drought ruined crops=farmers lost money.

New Deal

• President Franklin Roosevelt’s plan for getting out of the Great Depression was the New Deal.

• 1st strategy: FDR ordered all banks to temporarily close. When a bank could prove that it had enough money to operate, it could reopen.

New Deal

• In the 1st 100 days of FDR’s presidency, he accomplished the 3R’s:

1. Relief for the jobless & homeless2. Recovery for agriculture & industry3. Reforms to change how the economy

worked (changes to banks)

New Deal Programs in GeorgiaAgricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)

•Provided cash payments to farmers who reduced the number of acres they planted or the size of their herds.•It reduced the supply and raise the prices/demand.

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)

•Planted trees, restocked lakes and rivers with fish, drained swamps, built roads, worked as firefighters, and built buildings in state & national parks.

Rural Electrification Act (REA)

•In the 1930s, about 10% of people living in rural areas had access to electricity.•Brought electricity to the rural areas of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina.

Social Security Act (SSA) •Passed in 1935 by Congress.•Workers & employers made payments into a special fund, so when they retire, they can get a pension ($$$) from this fund.•It also helps laid-off workers, disabled workers, and needy families with dependent children.

Eugene Talmadge• From 1932-1936, he served as

governor of GA.

• Eugene Talmadge disliked the New Deal programs and fought hard to keep them out of GA.

• He felt that the federal gov’t should stay out of GA’s business.

Eurith D. Rivers• In 1936, GA elected

Eurith “Ed” Rivers as the next governor.

• Rivers supported the New Deal and helped to bring federal programs and money to GA.
