Set the scene Read the title of the lesson and then the title of the reading aloud. Say “This is a newspaper column. A newspaper column usually gives one writer’s opinion or ideas about different topics. Ask, “Do you ever read newspapers columns? What are the columns about?” Ask, “What do you think this column is about?”A. Preview the task. Read the instructions and the three examples aloud. Ask, “Did anything like these things happen to you recently?”B. During the reading.Say, “Now read the newspaper column. What good things happened to these people? As you read, underline the main events in each letter.”Do the reading. When Ss finish, have them work in pairs briefly, summarize the stories in each letter. To help Ss write the names of the three people on the board. Tell Ss to help each other with the information instead of looking back at the reading.Tell Ss to circle any new vocabulary words in the column. Have Ss call them out. Ask other Ss to help explain the meanings, or explain them yourself.C. Postreading Preview the task Read the instructions and the example aloud. Point out that the statement is checked false, and read the corrected statement. Have Ss look in the column for information to support that answer.Do the task Have Ss check True or False for the remaining statements. For false statements, have Ss find the true information in the column and correct the statements.

Preview the task Read the instructions aloud. Have Ss read the questions, and make sure they understand them. Play the recording. Ss listen only.Play the recording again Pause after each story to give Ss time to write their answers. Compare answers.
