Traditional dress is very important to indigenous identity in Ecuador.
Otavaleños – a blue poncho, white knickers, a felt fedora, and of course, the long braid, called a shimba.
Otavaleñas - white blouses and layered white and black skirts with red sashes, along with gold or red coral jewelry.

Progressive
SER and ESTAR both mean to be. How do you know which verb to use?

SER
• Use ser to indicate origin: where someone or something is from. Soy de Quito. I’m from Quito.
• Use ser to describe personal traits and physical characteristics. Los estudiantes son inteligentes. The students are
intelligent.
• Ser is also used to indicate professions. La señora Ramírez es maestra. Mrs. Ramírez is a
teacher.
• You also use ser to identify people or things Paco es mi hermano. Paco is my brother.
• Ser is used to give the time, the day, and the date. Son las tres y media. It is 3:30. Hoy es el 24 de mayo. Today is May 24th. Hoy es viernes. Today is Thursday.

ESTAR
• Present Progressive: using estar + present participle to talk about something that is in the act of happening. (We haven’t learned this yet!) La señorita Furphy está repasando los verbos estar y
ser ahora. Ms. Furphy is reviewing the verbs estar and ser right
now.
• Use estar to indicate location: where someone or something is. Quito está en Ecuador. Quito is in Ecuador.
• We also use estar to describe conditions, such as how someone feels, this can also be labeled as a state of being or an SOB. physical:
¿Cómo estás? Estoy bien. How are you? I’m fine.
emotional: Estamos contentos. We are happy. Están enojados. They are angry. N

Ordinal Numbers
• When used with a noun, an ordinal number must agree in number and gender with that noun.
• Ordinals are placed before nouns. Es la primera película de María
Conchita Alonso. It’s the first movie of María Conchita
Alonso. Nuestro apartamento está en el
octavo piso. Our apartment is on the eighth
floor.
• Primero and tercero drop the o before a masculine singular noun. Enero es el primer mes del año. January is the first month of the year.

• Decir and venir are irregular. Decir(e-i) is only irregular in the yo form, all
other forms are regular with a stem-change. Only the nosotros(as) and vosotros(as) forms are regular without a stem-change. Dicen que es una fiesta de sorpresa. They say that it is a surprise party.
Venir(e-ie) is similar to tener, except that the nosotros(as) and vosotros(as) forms have -ir endings, while tener uses -er endings. ¿De dónde vienes? Where are you coming from?

• Dar(to give), poner(to set, place or put), salir(to go out, to leave), and traer(to bring) are all irregular verbs only in the YO FORM of the present tense.
Doy una fiesta. I give the party. I am giving a party.
Pongo la mesa. I set the table. I am setting the table.
Salgo a las tres. I leave at 3. I am leaving at 3.
Traigo* las galletas. I bring the cookings. I am bringing the
cookies.* Traer is special in the yo form because it adds –igo not just –
go.

commands
• Use affirmative tú commands with a friend or a family member.
• Infinitive present tense form tú command (aff)

• Since they are identical to the él/ella/usted form present tense, how do we know it is a tú affirmative command not the present tense form? Present tense must use the subject(noun or pronoun) to
clarify who the subject is, the command does not you the subject pronoun because it is an understood you! N
