Who and What of Westward Expansion• Thomas Jefferson: the 3rd President, made the

Louisiana Purchase, and started the Democratic-Republican party system

• Lewis and Clark: two men selected by Jefferson to explore the Louisiana territory

• Sacagawea: Native American guide who helped L&C

on their journey

• James Monroe: 5th President, created stricter laws in foreign policy from Europe which created a strong America

• Andrew Jackson: aggressive 7th President who led the removal of Native Americans from their lands for American expansion

• Cherokee Natives: large group of Native Americans forcibly removed from their homes and land in the Trail of Tears

• Manifest Destiny: the belief it was the US’s destiny to expand west to the Pacific Ocean

• Louisiana Purchase: in 1803 the land Jefferson bought from France

• Monroe Doctrine: foreign policy that distanced the US from Europe

• Cotton Gin: invention that made “Cotton King” of the south

US: The Early Years

• George Washington was elected the first President• Federalists (who wanted a strong central gov’t) were

the majority political party• When Washington was done serving the nation, a new

political party had emerged- Democratic-Republicans• The Democratic-Republicans wanted:

– Limited national gov’t– Feared the rule of one or a few– Supported farmers and tradesmen
