9.4 Combining Like Terms pg. 114• Algebra problems separate terms with + and –

signs. The expression 5x – 4 – 3x + 7 has 4 terms: 5x, 4, 3x, and 7. Terms having the same variable can be combined (added or subtracted) to simplify the expression.

Simplify 5x – 4 – 3x + 7

The key is to READ CAREFULLY! Use the information given to solve what the question is asking.

• Example 9: Mrs. Hill bought 3 pounds of apples. The price is $2.49 per pound. How much did Mrs. Hill pay for the 3 pounds of apples?

Step 1: Get the facts together:

Solving EquationsClasswork: Graphing Inequalities (9.7) pg. 118-119

Homework: Multiplication/Division Number Puzzle/Bring Composition Book Due FRIDAY.

Graphing Inequalities (9.7) pg. 118-119An inequality is a sentence that contains a < , > , ≤ , or ≥ sign. Look at the following graphs of inequalities on a number line. Graphing inequality shows all the numbers that make the inequality true.

X > 2 is read “x is greater than 2” since it is > and not ≥.

X ≤ 3 is read “x is less then or equal to 3” since the inequality is ≤. The endpoint is filled in. The graph uses a closed circle because the number 3 is included in the graph.

Graphing Inequalities (9.7) pg. 118-119There can be more than one inequality sign. These are called compound inequalities. For example:1 < x < 4 is read “1 is less than x and x is less than 4.”

1 4

X < 1 or x ≥ 4 is read “x is less than 1 or x is greater than or equal to 4.”

0 1 4

Solving EquationsClasswork: Solving Inequalities by Adding and

Subtracting (9.8) pg. 120Homework: Multiplication/Division Number

Puzzle/Bring Composition Book Due TOMORROW.

Solving Inequalities by Addition and Subtraction(9.8) pg. 120

Solving inequalities is similar to solving equations.

Example 11: Solve and graph the solution set for x – 2 ≤ 5Step 1: Add 2 to both sides of the inequality so the variable will be by itself. x – 2 ≤ 5

Step 2: Graph the solution set for the inequality.

Order of OperationsClasswork: Solving Inequalities by Multiplying and

Dividing (9.9) pg. 121Homework: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMPOSITION BOOK

Solving Inequalities by Multiplication and Division (9.9) pg. 121

Solving inequalities is similar to solving equations.

Example 12: Solve and graph the solution set for 4x ≤ 5Step 1: Divide both sides of the inequality by 4. 4x ≤ 5

Step 2: Graph the solution
