Susan and I are lost in the centre of Boston. We would like to visit the Boston

Harbour. We have just decided to ask a policeman how to get there.

Matthew: Excuse me. Is the Boston Habour near here? We have heard that it

is beautiful.

Policeman: Yes, it is. Boston Harbour is a natural harbour located adjacent out

the city of Boston.

Matthew: I see. Can you tell me how to reach there, please? We have no

knowledge of this area.

Policeman: Sure!: Cross the road and turn left at the other side. Walk along

the footpath until you reach the traffic lights. You will see a shopping centre on

the left hand side. Walk across the road and turn right after the shopping

centre. Keep going straight for about 200m and the Harbour is to your left.

Matthew: It sounds very complicated. How far is it from here?

Policeman: It's not so complicated. It's about twenty minutes walk from here.

I can draw a map for you.

Matthew: Oh, I would really appreciate that. By the way will I go North or

South?

Policeman: You will go northwards. Here's a drawing of the area.

Matthew: Thank you.

two friends in New York. Will you buy any?

Matthew: No, I won’t.

Shop assistant: Can I help you?

Susan: Yes, may I see those postcards over there?

Shop assistant: Sure. You mean these ones?

Susan: No, the ones on the left. Yes, those ones…thank you. How much are

they?

Shop assistant: These make 95 cents.

3.3.3. Ask and give directions

Ask directions

We can use some structures to ask a direction:

- How do I get to…?

- Where is…?

- Do you know where I can…?

E.g.: How can I get to the church?

Where is the train station?

Do you know where I can buy some flowers?

Give directions

There are different ways to give directions.

- You can say the name of the street, and some building nearby.

- Or you can explain how to get there.

E.g.: It’s on Penn Street, between the church and the town hall.

Go straight until the drugstore, and turn on the left.

To give directions you can use some of the following expressions:

Here you are some examples, to better understand it!

E.g.: Hello! Where is the nearest hospital?

Go straight on, and take the second on the left.

Thank you!

No problem!

Here you are some more useful vocabulary and expressions:

When we don’t know the direction someone is asking us, we can say:

I’m not sure!

I can’t help you

I’ve never heard on it

E.g.: Where can I buy a pair of shoes?

I’m not sure.

It’s on…. On the … floor

Next to… North /South/ West/East

Between/ in front of/ behind Left /right

Across from Go straight/ Turn around

3.4. Grammar

Now let’s learn some aspects about Grammar. In this topic we will study the

Future Tense and the different ways to express future. We will also learn the

question words, prepositions of place and time, and some compound names

and adjectives.

If you are ready let’s begin!!

3.4.1. Future

There are different ways of expressing future. Let’s see them:

Future Simple: with WILL

The form is: WILL + infinitive.

We use will + infinitive in the following:

1. To make predictions about the future, or express your opinion about

something.

E.g.: I think that I will live in London.

2. To make offers.

E.g.: I will help you.

3. For decisions you make at the moment of speaking.

E.g.: The telephone is ringing, I’ll answer it.

4. To talk about things you are not sure they will happen.

E.g.: I’ll probably be on holydays in July, but I’m not sure.

Page 13: UNIT 3. WHERE IS THE HARBOUR? - Grupo Conforsa

Inglés Intermedio Bajo. Where is the harbour?3.12

Interesting…

(BE) going to + infinitive

We use this structure (am, is, are) + going to + infinitive to express intentions

of doing something, or plans.

E.g.: I’m going to study Medicine.

We also use this to talk about future events that are going to happen sure.

E.g.: We are going to travel to Italy. We have the tickets.

Present Simple.

It is used for fixed or scheduled events.

E.g.: My plane leaves at 12:00.

Present Continuous

Remember that the Present Continuous is formed with “to be” (am, is, are) +

the verb in gerund (-ing)

It is used for arranged events.

E.g.: On Saturday night we are having a party.

Future Continuous (Will be + (vb-ing) )

The future continuous is formed with: will be + the main verb ended in –ing

(gerund)

It is used for temporary situations in the future.

Remember that the short or contracted form of “will” is ‘ll, and the negative

is “won’t”

E.g.: You’ll be in London.

In interrogative the pattern is: WILL+ SUBJECT+ INFINITIVE…?

E.g.: You won’t be in London.

Page 14: UNIT 3. WHERE IS THE HARBOUR? - Grupo Conforsa

Inglés Intermedio Bajo. Where is the harbour? 3.13

E.g.: Where will you be working in ten year’s time?

Future Perfect (will+have+past participle)

The Future Perfect is formed with: will have+ the past participle.

We use this tense for situations that will happen at a time in the future.

E.g.: When we arrive home, my father will have left.

About to + infinitive

We use this pattern when it refers to the immediate future.

E.g.: The train is about to leave.

3.4.2. Question words

Question words are used to make questions. Depending on what we want to

know, we use one or other.

They are at the beginning of the sentence, following this structure:

E.g.: What do you think?

Where does she live?

Here we are a list of question words, the meaning and some examples:

QUESTION WORD + auxiliary verb + subject + verb+ …?

WHAT

It’s used to ask for things.

E.g.: What is that?

WHERE

It’s used to ask for places.

E.g.: Where do you go?

WHEN

It’s used to ask for the time.

E.g.: When did you go to Rome?

Page 15: UNIT 3. WHERE IS THE HARBOUR? - Grupo Conforsa

Inglés Intermedio Bajo. Where is the harbour?3.14

WHO and WHAT can act as subject or object in an interrogative sentence.

-When they are subject in the sentence there is not an auxiliary verb.

E.g.: Who rang you?

What made you change your mind?

WHO

It’s used to ask for people.

E.g.: Who is your aunt?

WHOSE

It’s used to ask for the owner.

E.g.: Whose is this pencil?

WHY

It’s for the reason.

E.g.: Why do you cry?

WHICH

It’s to ask about one in a specific group.

E.g.: Which is your car?

HOW

It’s to ask for the way of doing something.

E.g.: How can I do that?

HOW MUCH

To ask about the quantity (uncountable names)

E.g.: How much sugar do you have?

HOW MANY

To ask about the quantity (countable names)

E.g.: How many books have you read?

HOW LONG

To ask about the duration of something.

E.g.: How long does this class last?

HOW FAR

To ask about the distance.

E.g.: How far is your village?

HOW OFTEN

To ask about the frequency.

E.g.: How often do you go to the beach?

HOW + adjective

To ask about the quality of that adjective.

E.g.: How big is your house?

Page 16: UNIT 3. WHERE IS THE HARBOUR? - Grupo Conforsa

Inglés Intermedio Bajo. Where is the harbour? 3.15

- Whereas if they are an object in the sentence, the auxiliary verb is necessary.

E.g.: Who did you phone?

What do you do?

Look at this sentence: Susan asked the President.

- If we ask for the subject: Who asked the President?

- If we asked for the object: Who did Susan ask?

3.4.3. Prepositions: place and time

Here we will see place and time prepositions.

Prepositions of place

Place prepositions are used to describe the place or position where something

is.Normally prepositions go before the noun.

Let’s see the prepositions.

Prepositions of time

Let’s study prepositions of time: on, in, at.

On

We use on with days and dates. We also use “on” with special holydays (on my

birthday), and special parts of the day.

E.g.: I go to the swimming pool on Monday.

IN dentro

INSIDE dentro de algo cerrado

ON encima

UNDER debajo

NEXT TO junto a

BETWEEN entre 2 cosas

AMONG entre más de 2 cosas

OPPOSITE en frente

3.4.4. Compound nouns and adjectives

Compound nouns are nouns composed by two or more words. There are

several possibilities to form compound nouns: noun + noun, noun + adjective,

verb + noun, etc.

Let’s see some of them:

NOUN + NOUN

E.g.: toothpaste (tooth + paste), football.

ADJECTIVE + NOUN

E.g.: weekly ticket, full moon, blackboard.

VERB + NOUN

E.g.: swimming pool, break water.

PREPOSITION + VERB

E.g.: input, undercut.

Page 19: UNIT 3. WHERE IS THE HARBOUR? - Grupo Conforsa

Inglés Intermedio Bajo. Where is the harbour?3.18

It’s also important to know that there are different ways of joining the two

words to form a compound:

the two words joined together

E.g.: toothpaste

separated with a hyphen

E.g.: dry- cleanig

as two separated words

E.g.: swimming pool

Susan and I are tired after our long walk to come to the harbour. So we have

decided sitting and relaxing reading interesting news about Boston’s bicyclist.

Let’s read!

Mayor gives nod, lanes to Boston’s bicyclist

BOSTON. Bicyclist gained ground in the battle for road space yesterday as the

city announced that bike lanes have been created along Commonwealth Avenue

in Allston and the American Legion Highway in Roslindale.

“I want to make Boston a more bike-friendly city”, Mayor Thomas Menino said

after telling the crowd that he’d been on his own bike at 5 a.m. that morning.

The new bike lanes, along with the placement of 250 bike racks citywide, is

part of Menino’s Boston Bikes initiative, which began 10 months ago in an effort

to make Boston a “world-class bicycling city”.

Menino cited high gas prices, environmental concerns and health benefits as

reasons for a surge in bike riders in the city.

MassBike Executive Director David Watson said that when bicyclists,

automobiles, and pedestrians are vying for space in an urban environment, bike

lanes are particularly important for beginning cyclist, and that he hopes to

educate students who will be pouring into the city in the fall.

Menino said the Boston Bikes initiative hopes to include even more lanes to the

city, along with promoting a bike sharing program, which would include bike

rentals with multiple pick-up and drop-off locations.

3.8. English World

In this section you will learn more things about Boston. Here we have some

information about Boston Harbour and the transportation in America. So, sit

down, relax and enjoy!

Boston Harbor

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boston Harbor is a natural harbor located adjacent ot

the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is home to the

Port of Boston, a major shipping facility in the

northeast.

History

Since its discovery by European Settlers in the 1630s, Boston Harbor has been

an important port in American history. It was the site of the Boston Tea Party

as well as almost continuous backfilling of the harbor until the 1800s. More

recently, the harbor was the site of a massive cleanup in the 1960s that was

the focus of one of the first harbor cleanups in the nation. The water was so

polluted that The Standells made a song called Dirty Water. Since the the

writing of the song, the harbor quality has significantly improved and the harbor

is now clean enough to swim in on occasion.

Geography

Boston Harbor is a large harbor which constitutes the western extremity of

Massachusetts Bay. The harbor is sheltered from Massachusetts Bay and the

open Atlantic Ocean by a combination of the Winthrop Peninsula and Deer

Island to the north, the hooked Nantasket Peninsula and Point Allerton to the

south, and the harbor islands in the middle. The harbor is often described as

being split into an inner harbor and an outer harbor.

Transportation

Matthew: Susan do you think is a good idea to rent a car?

Susan: Matthew, the traffic in Boston is terrible! You know what? Most hotels

on the outskirts of Boston and in the suburbs have parking lots where you can

leave the car, for free or for a fee, depending on the hotel, and use Boston’s

first-class public transportation system to get around.

So it is better to take the metro. The Subway service runs less frequently on

the weekends, especially on Sunday, but during the week it is generally very

reliable and efficient, especially considering the large number of passengers it

services every day.

Matthew: You are right! Trains are also good here in America. Do you think so?

Susan: Yes, Amtrak offers good service. We came from New York to Boston by

train and it was fine, wasn’t it?

Matthew: Yes, great service. From New York City to Boston was quick and

comfortable. But Amtrak needs to lower its prices. Maybe by car would be

cheaper.

But I love Amtrak, for the scenery, for the frequency of the trains, for the

choices that I have, for the flexibility…

What I like about Amtrak is that you can walk through the trains. You don't

have to remain seated you can walk to the dining car or snack car. The workers

are friendly and courteous, in either first class or coach.

So we will take the public transportation again! Where do you want to go next?
