    BTEC CREATIVE MEDIA PRODUCTION - Unit 22: Single Camera Techniques

    Unit 1: Pre-Production Techniques- P1/M1/D1 - Understand requirements for a

    specific media production.

    Unit 2: Communication SkillsBe able to extract information from written

    sources.

    Create a written report to include the nine points below. You must find numerous

    examples for each of the nine areas and include print screens or other evidence of

    what you have found.

    1. IntroductionIntroduce what pre-production and outline why it is done as well as why it is

    important. Use examples from film or TV. Reference that the type of

    productionyou will be working on for Unit 22 will be a short film.

    2. FinanceWrite about how short films can be financed. Research production costs for a

    short film (such as crew, talent, material, facilities, post production) and

    include these. Mention what you would need to budget for in a short film.

    You could include Attack the Block as a case study of how a film got financed,

    how much it cost to make and how much money it made (or didnt).

    3. TimeWrite about why timeis so important to a productioninclude deadlines,

    availability of equipment etc. Research timescalesfor the production of a

    short film (from pre-production to actually filming) clearancesand include

    this.

    4. PersonnelWrite about why matching skills and experienceis so important. Write about

    the different types of job rolesthat you researched in film. Research some ofthe salaries of different job roles. Write about different ways you could recruit

    a team for a filmresourcing.

    5. FacilitiesTalk about the different types of facilities you would need for a short film.

    Mention the production equipment and post-production equipmentyou

    would use. Research typical facility houses, post production housesand

    outsourcing costs for filming and include this.

    6. MaterialsExplain what materialsfor a film would be, include archive or library or

    photo-library materials, sound, audio, script etc.. Talk about the costs

    involved (found through research). Talk about clearances for material (you

    could mention the Charlie Brooker programme). Mention some of thematerialsyou will need for you filmcostume, music, script, audioetc.

    7. ContributorsMention the type of contributorsyou would need for your short film, e.g.

    actors (talent) or extras.Mention that as you are making a film you will need

    actors but if you were making a TV programme you might need experts or the

    publicetc. Explain that all contributors need to sign a release form and

    include an example (found online or copied from the book).

    8. LocationsExplain how you would need to identify and reccelocations before you started

    filming. Talk about limitations(i.e noise, distance, cost, weather etc) andrisks

    such as health and safety.

    9. Codes of practice and regulation.A)Regulation- Explain who regulatesthe film industrythe BBFC. Explain

    what they do and how they are funded. Briefly give some case studyexamples (i.e Human Centipede or Lovely Bones). Compare film with how

    TV is regulated (Ofcom)

    B) Codes of practice- Explain how for your film you would need to getlocation permissions, health and safety and insurance (public liability).

    C) Research the trade unionfor film - Producers Alliance for Cinema andTelevision (PACT) or Broadcasting Entertainment, Cinematograph and

    Theatre Union (BECTU) explain what they do and how this would impact ashort film.

    Unit 2Research

    10.You must keep a research log with evidence of all the research you did toinclude with your report. You must ensure you use a variety of sources

    books, magazines, newspapers, journals, handouts, interviews etc.. NOT just

    the internet. Make sure your sources are reliable.
