FloodThe simplest type of lantern usedwithin a theatre, it uses a linearbulb as a source of light.Reflectors around the lightemitting lamp direct the beaminto an opening of the box withno lens. A Floods only way offocussing is the general directionof the wide spread light beam. There are two types of floods;symmetrical reflectors andasymmetrical reflectors.

FresnelA Fresnel lantern derives fromthe lens used in lighthouseswhich was developed in C.1823by French inventor AugustinJean Fresnel. It has more controlover the beam angle than aFlood but has less control than a

Profile lantern. To adjust thefocus of the light beam producedfrom this fixture you can movethe Tungsten Halogen Quartzbulb along with the attachedreflector behind the lamp, furtheror closeraway from the lens; thiscan be achieved by moving anunderside knob. Barn doorslocated to the front of the lanterncan refine the edge of the light

    seen on stage.

Par CanPar Can is short for parabolicreflector because of the lamp this

lantern uses; the same one usedin car headlights. Apart fromtwisting the fixtures elliptic beam,it has no more features to focusthe light. To compensate for this, the Par Can comes in a range ofsizes.

More recently the advancementof LED (Lighting EmittingDiodes), Par Cans have taken to

this new technology. Following atypical RGB pattern, Par Canswill be leading the way in LEDlighting fixtures.

Fresnel lantern, a PebbleConvexs (PC) only difference isthe lens. A PC is a modifiedversion of the Plano Convexlens, having a pebble dashedeffect on the flat side of the lens(hence it name). This can also bemoved forwards and backwards

ProfileOften referred to as a spotlightby many because of its hardedge, it is the most complex andversatile of all the theatrelanterns. Here are its mainadaptions:

Two movable plano-convexlenses to focus the lights beam.

    One adjustable lamp.

At least four shutters (thinmetal pieces) that cut off part ofthe light to produce a shape.

A GOBO which produces apattern in the light.

An Iris which creates a circularlight beam of any size.

Aa Followspot is a Profile whichcan be moved within aperformance to follow an actor.

The power they use!Below is the typical power consumption of each lantern from the SeleconPhillips range. Each lamp varies from manufacture to manufacture, sotake these as guidelines only. It is important to know the amount of wattseach lantern uses to calculate important sums to work out the maximumnumber of lights that can be powered by one dimmer.
