Không dùng kèm với trợ động từ do, does, did, have, has, had, am, is, are, was, were. Động từ chính đi sau trợ động từ cũng không chia (luôn ở dạng nguyên thể không có to). present tense past tense will can may shall must (have to) would (used to) could might should (ought to) (had better) (had to) Các từ đặt trong ngoặc là các động từ bán hình thái. Ví dụ về cách dùng trợ động từ: I can swim ; she can swim , too. (không chia theo ngôi) He can swim . (Không dùng: He cans swim hoặc He can swims ) They will leave now. (Không dùng: They will leaving now hoặc They will can leave now.) They have to go now. He has to go now. (chia theo ngôi). 1. Câu phủ định dùng trợ động từ Trong câu phủ định, thêm not vào sau trợ động từ, trước động từ chính: Ex: John will leave now. => John will not leave now. He can swim => He can not swim. Chú ý khi viết tắt: will not => won't; must not => musn't; would not => wouldn't; could not => couldn't; can not => can't. 2. Câu nghi vấn dùng trợ động từ Trong câu hỏi, đặt trợ động từ ở đầu câu: Ex: John will leave now. => Will he leave now? Yes, he will/ No, he won't 3. Cách sử dụng could/may/might: Chỉ khả năng có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại nhưng người nói không dám chắc. (Cả 3 trợ động từ đều có giá trị như nhau). Ex: It might rain tomorrow. = It may rain tomorrow. = It could rain tomorrow. = It will possibly rain tomorrow = Maybe it will rain tomorrow. Ex: He should study tonight. One should do exercise daily. You should go on a diet. She should see a doctor about her pain. (Expectation) Ex: It should rain tomorrow. (= I expect it to rain tomorrow) My check should arrive next week. (= I expect it to arrive next week) Các cụm từ had better, ought to, be supposed to đều có nghĩa tương đương (với điều kiện động từ be trong be supposed to phải chia ở thời hiện tại).
