Agenda Catalyst Pass quizzes back Mastery based grading Dimensional Analysis Lecture Break Phase 2 of Project Homework: Scientific Notation, Calculator
Usage
Catalyst
Date: Mon 9/9 or Tue 9/10
Reflect on the quiz from Friday
What do you predict is your grade?
Would this grade reflect what you have learned?
What would have been helpful to do better on the
quiz?
What will you do in the future to demonstrate your
learning well on assessments and projects?
Pass Back Quizzes Period 1-3 Overall Average: 89% (B+) Period 2-4 Overall Average: 84% (B) Period 6-8 Overall Average: 89% (B+) Period 9-11 Overall Average: 86% (B)
It’s All About the Learning! If you got below a 100%, it is SUGGESTED that
you come into office hours to go over the quiz
If you got below an 80%, it is MANDATORY that you come into office hours to go over your quiz This MUST be done by THURSDAY! Failure to do so results in a REFLECTION HOUR
With Your Quizzes Habits of Mind vs. Essential Skills Grades
Look over them, determine if you MUST/SHOULD come into office hours
When finished, place them into the folders. Write your name large on the folder (First and Last). SLCs

Mastery Based Grading
On PowerSchool, starred (*) assignments are NOT
included in your final grade. The included
assignments are the ones labelled “OVERALL
SCORE” assignments.
Category Percentage of Final Grade
Unit1: Science Fundamentals 23.3%
Unit 2: Motion and Forces 23.3%
Unit 3: Energy and Momentum 23.3%
Semester 1 POL 10.0%
Habits of Mind 20.0%
Essential Skills and Knowledge (Physics Mastery) = 70% of
gradeHabits of Mind (Accountability,
Quality, Collaboration) =
30% of grade
Mastery Based Grading
What this DOESN’T mean:
Unlimited retakes on assessments
What this DOES mean:
Multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery
on an essential skill:
Homework, Quizzes, Exams, Lab Reports,
Projects, POLs
Exams are cumulative, which means that the Unit 2
Exam will still assess mastery on Unit 1 material.
Mastery Based Grading
In Mrs. Larkin’s Class:
If you show higher mastery LATER, you receive the HIGHER score.
Example
On 8/30, you got a 7 on an assignment. On 9/3, you got a 9 on an assignment.
Your overall score would become a 9
If you show lower mastery LATER, you receive the AVERAGE score.
Example
On 8/30, you got a 9 on an assignment. On 9/3, you got a 7 on an assignment
Your overall score would become a 8 (average of 9 and 7)
Mastery Based Grading
REASSESSMENTS are allowed only for the following:
Unit Projects
Improve and return the project within two weeks. Must have been
turned in COMPLETED on time.
Lab Reports
Edit the report based on Mrs. Larkin’s feedback and return within two
weeks. Must have been turned in COMPLETED on time.
Unit Assessments
Do test corrections during Mrs. Larkin’s office hours and return within
two weeks. Test corrections don’t count for points; they only EARN you
the ability to do a DIFFERENT form of the unit assessment. Must be
done within 2 weeks.
Bright Idea! If you have not watched the YouTube video, do so
tonight so that you are prepared for the unit assessment.
If you don’t understand something, OFFICE HOURS!!!! Remember, you will see the content for EVERY EXAM
from here to the end of the year, since they are cumulative.
Basic Dimensional Analysis Activity
There are 3 triangles per 1 circle. There are 2 circles per 1 square. How many triangles are in 4 squares?

Basic Dimensional Analysis
Dimensional Analysis: Comparing relationships between units
Conversion Factor: changes something to a different version
1 ft = 12 in 1 mm = 0.001 m 1 kg = 2.2 lb
1 s = 100 cs 1 L = 1000 mL 1 mL = 1 cm3
Conversion factors can be written as fractions:

Project: Too Fly For Junior High
Phase 2 Task:
Modify the best Phase 1 paper airplane in a
SINGLE, MEASURABLE way.
Create 5 models that incrementally change this part.
Design and conduct an experiment using the scientific
method to determine which of the 5 SIMILAR paper
airplane models flies the furthest.
Constraints:
You may use computer paper, cardstock, glue, tape,
paperclips, & staples.
Phase 2 Design Lab Portion of Notebook. Date 9/9
Write out the procedure (steps) for the experiment inPhase 2. Indicate the following: Independent Variable, Dependent Variable, Constants,
Control Group, Experimental Groups
Must be approved by Mrs. Larkin before you begin
Materials you will have: Tape measurer, Ruler, Paper airplanes Only the following may be used for airplane: Computer paper,
cardstock, staples, paper clips, tape, glue, scissors Ask if you need anything else
