How can Someone Become a Citizen?

• Any person born in this country is a United States citizen.

• People who move to this country are immigrants and must live in the United States for five years before they can become a citizen.

• They must take a test that asks questions about the United States government and American history.


How can Someone Become a Citizen?

• They have to be able to speak, read and write English.

• After they pass the test they must take an oath of loyalty to the United States of America.

• Children under 18 whose parents become United States citizens are also United States citizens.


Scenario• You were asked to walk the

neighbor’s dog when they went on vacation for a week. Every day after school you went to their house and walked the dog. Was that acting responsibly?


Scenario• Your best friend asked you to

watch his bike while he was on vacation. He said not to ride it, because the tire had a leak. You rode it anyway and now the tire is completely flat. Did you act responsibly?


Responsibility Changes• Think about when you were 6

years old. What were some of your responsibilities?

• Think about now. What are some of the responsibilities you have now that you didn’t have at six.


Responsibilities at Home, School and Both• Watch me as I show you how to

draw a venn diagram.• Now let’s think of one

responsibility you have at home, one you have at school, and one you have at both home and school.

• Complete your venn diagram by coming up with three more responsibilities for each area of the diagram.

• This will be graded for social studies.
