CE.3b: 1st & 14th Amendments (DUE PROCESS OF LAW)

***************************************************************************************************14th Amendment (1869) - VIDEO

1. Explain DUE PROCESS OF LAW.

2. Provide an example of a DUE PROCESS protection.

3. Does the 14th Amendment apply to the nation as a whole or the individual states?

4. What must a state conduct before sentencing a person to prison?

5. Which amendment establishes DUE PROCESS OF LAW at the national level?

Few rights, if any, are considered absolute. For example, the guarantee of freedom of religion doesn’t mean that the gov’t must allow all religious practices. In

the 1800s, some Mormons believed it was a man’s religious duty to have more than one wife. The Supreme Court ruled that

Mormons had to obey laws forbidding that practice.
