What you need to do to be successful in this portfolio unit!

You will need to focus on services that are from one sector in the local community. All of your investigation within the unit will relate to the one sector you have chosen, to include:

1. The range of care needs of major client groups and why they may need the services.

2. The ways people can obtain services in the sector chosen and the possible barriers that could prevent people from gaining access to the services.

3. The different types of services in the sector that exist to meet different needs of individuals and how they are developed and organized.

4. The principles of care that underpin all care work with clients.

5. The main work roles and skills of people who provide health, social care and early years services.

Page 6: Unit 1 Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision

What you need to do next once you start your coursework!

You must also present your work in an appropriate format using evidence that is relevant to the investigation you have decided to carry out.

You must include:

A plan or checklist

An evaluation:•aim•objectives•effectiveness•conclusions

Improvements that

could be madeA bibliography

When you start your planning under controlled assessment conditions !

You will need to start a plan for the investigation of the sector you have chosen. You will need to follow this plan after the teaching has been completed and before starting the controlled assignment. You should include:

The dates when you propose to investigate and write up the information

The actions you propose to take The reasons for the actions to be taken

Page 8: Unit 1 Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision

How you could draw up the plan you intend to use for your investigation.

Date Action to be taken Reason for actions15 Jan Research the structure of

the health sectorTo find out how it is organized at national and local levels

This is an example – the statements you make will be greater and the plan will be quite extensive.

Today and during the next few lessons, you will learn how to carry out the planning and research tasks

Task 1 Working in your groups (remember each person

has a job to do over the coming weeks, you will be graded on the input each person contributes to each task) put your name next to each task you do.

Now write down three services that you or your family have used , produce a table with three columns headed:

1. Health care2. Social care3. Early yearsPlace the services that each of you have used under the

correct heading. Now state why you use the service?AfL – now compare your table with another group, are

they similar or different?

Task 3 – Homework

Linking your answers into PIES How did the professional care workers apply

the care values in the services you used? How did this make you feel? It is quality of

service that we receive when we are in need of health and social care that will influence how we rate the services.

How well did the services meet your needs? Make some notes at home, then discuss this with the rest of the group during next lesson.

Next time – remember everything you do now will be used to help you as an individual during the planning controlled

assessment Start to work on your planning and research strategies How will you do this?First - you need to decide on the area of services you

intend to study.Secondly – you need to remember to complete your study

in the local community How can I do this?Using the glossary of local services on the next slide or

using a service you know of, begin to start thinking about how you could collect primary research. You will write this up in a large mind map.

Mind map – what do you need to plan and think about?
