p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that children can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. Leaders can ask “get-to-know-you” questions after welcoming kids into their groups.

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

Round and Round

Play a game of “Duck, Duck, Goose” in a circle with the kids. Talk about how it feels to be chased, how it feels to be caught, and what it feels like to get back to the seat safely. What do they notice about how they feel? Does their heart beat faster? Do they start screaming? Laughing? Today we will hear about a chase that lasted for a very long time!

Color “David and Saul” Coloring Sheets

• Tell preschoolers that today they will learn about a choice that David had to make.

• Distribute coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Allow them to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin.

• If the kids prefer to use blank paper, they can color on the back of the page.

STAGE MANAGER

(Show Session Title slide.) Hey, everyone! Have you ever had to make a REALLY hard choice? Sometimes decisions are easy, like not taking your sister’s cookie when she isn’t looking. But other times, choices can be much harder. Doing the right thing isn’t always doing the easiest thing.

Today we’ll learn about a hard choice that David had to make, … and I think you might be surprised by how it turns out! But right now, I’m making the very EASY choice to check with our teams and see if we’re ready to start! (speaks into headset) Are you guys all set to go? Awesome. (speaks to audience) OK, they’re ready! Are you ready? Then let’s do this! PLACES! (runs offstage)

Today, we will hear more about King Saul and David! We want you to know that God loves all people. (Show Life Point slide.) Let’s say that together. God loves all people. Good job!

This is what our Bible verse says today. Can you say this with me? (Practice saying the verse with the kids a few times. Encourage kids to say the verse to a new friend each time you say it together.)

p CONNECT ION PO INT GAME

c Estimated time: 5-10 minutes

t Tech: Connection Point slide, Connection Point theme music

p People: Host, everyone

h Props: small baskets

Game Instructions:

Depending on the size of your group, set up multiple relay lines. At the start of each line will be a person with a basket on their head. Each person will carry the basket on their head and make it to the other side and back without dropping it. Let kids use their hands to hold the basket. Everyone has to do their part on this relay in order for the team to win. The team to have all of their players go through the line wins!

Host

(Play Connection Point theme music and show Connection Point slide.) (Enter after theme music plays.) Hi, everyone! Welcome to Connection Point!

Today’s game is a basket relay. Each of you will carry a basket on your head and make it across to the other side of the room and back. Then you’ll pass the basket off to the next friend in line. The first team to have all their friends get across the room and back again, wins! Be careful not to drop the basket! Everyone has to do their part to help their team win!

Can you balance your baskets and help your team win? Get ready! Get set! Go!

(Play the game as time allows.)

Wow! You guys are great basket holders! OK, that was great … let’s pass the baskets back to the leaders and have a seat. Great job, guys.

(Theme music/slide to transition. Host leads into next segment.)

(Play the Bible Story video or tell the following Bible story.)

STORYTELLER

(Show Bible Story slide.) (Interactive Option: Call on two kids to stand near you. Give each child a question mark poster to hold. Position the poster-holders so their backs are to the group. Each time you ask a question, physically turn one of the poster-holders so she is facing the group. After the question is answered, turn the child around so her back is facing the group once more. Invite the rest of the kids in the room to clap their hands two times each time you turn a poster-holder to face the group.)

Hi, friends! I want to ask you a very serious question today. (Turn a poster-holder.) Are you ready? (Turn a poster-holder.) Are you listening? (Allow kids to respond.) Good! (Turn a poster-holder.) Have your feelings ever been hurt by a friend? (Allow kids to respond.) Yes! Wow! (Turn a poster-holder.) Do you think that you have ever hurt your friend’s feelings? (Allow kids to respond.) That’s a hard question. But sometimes we do or say things that hurt our friends.

Today I have a true story from the Bible about King Saul and David. In this true story, King Saul forgets how much he loved David and decides he would rather hurt David. (Turn a poster-holder.) Are you ready to hear today’s Bible story? (Allow kids to respond.)

King Saul had become very jealous of David. He was so jealous that he wanted to hurt David. King Saul began chasing David, causing David to find places to hide. (Turn a poster-holder.) I wonder … do you like to play the game “Hide and Seek”? (Allow kids to respond.) It’s fun to play hide and seek with your friends or with your family. But this was no game for David and Saul. This was very dangerous for David. David was afraid of King Saul, so he ran away.

Saul’s men told him that David had run away. Saul took 3,000 soldiers to help him look for David in the desert. Saul and his men came to a cave and Saul went inside. (Turn a poster-holder.) Do you think that it would be dark inside of a cave? (Allow kids to respond.) Yes, it was dark inside the cave. (Turn a poster-holder.) Do you think it would be cold inside the cave? (Allow kids to respond.) It might have been cold inside the cave. (Turn a poster-holder.) Do you think that someone else was in the cave when Saul went inside? (Allow kids to respond. Poster-holders can return to their seats.)

There was someone else inside the cave! David and his men were hiding in the back of the cave. Saul did not know that David was inside. David’s men whispered to him, “David, God brought Saul here. You can do whatever you want.” David did not want to hurt Saul. He crawled close to Saul and cut off part of Saul’s robe. David would not let anyone hurt Saul. Saul left the cave. Let’s see what happened after Saul left the cave.

(Open your Bible and read 1 Samuel 24:8.)

After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed to the ground in homage.

David was honoring God by making the right choice to not hurt Saul. David knew that God did not want him to hurt Saul. David said, “People said that I am your enemy. Today God brought you into this cave where I was.” David held up the corner of Saul’s robe. David said, “I cut part of your robe. But I did not kill you. I did not hurt you. I am not your enemy.” Saul said, “David, you have done good to me even though I wanted to hurt you. You are not my enemy. I know you will be king one day. Promise you will not hurt my family when you are king.” David promised not to hurt Saul’s family. Saul went home. God took care of David and Saul that day in the cave. God did not want them to hurt each other. God loved them both.

(Show Christ Focus slide.)

(Lead kids to cross their arms across their chests and hold them there until you have finished the closing prayer.) Jesus came to show us God’s love. Jesus cares for our needs every day. Jesus cares for us when we are hurt, sad, or sick. We can trust Jesus to take care us. When you are sick or afraid, you can ask Jesus to take care of you. Jesus loves you!

God, thank You for loving us and taking care of us. Help us to trust in Your care. We love You. Amen.

p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

This time is designed for churches that have a pick-up time from a large room as parents arrive. It’s a great time for follow-up conversations and questions from small group leaders about the session’s content. You also can use the missions emphasis (below).

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

• Why was David hiding? (King Saul was chasing him.)

• Why was King Saul chasing David? (He was jealous of him.)

• What happened in the cave? (David didn’t hurt King Saul when he had the chance.)

MISS IONS EMPHASIS (OPTIONAL)

• Prior to the session, gather two teacups and two Ping-Pong® balls for each small group.

• Review the missions story, “Who Are the Bedia?”

• Remind kids that the Bedia enjoy drinking tea in little shops.

• Group kids into two teams. Line each team up behind a teacup.

• Allow the first child in each line to begin trying to toss a ball into the cup. Then guide players to move to the end of the line so that the next kids may take their turns.

• Pray for the Bedia people to know and follow Jesus.

Missions Story: Who Are the Bedia?

This is a story about how God brought together two groups of people from opposite sides of the world! It all began when First Baptist Church of Centerton, Arkansas learned about a people group in India called the Bedia. The Bedia had never heard about Jesus. Most of the Bedia are Hindu, which means they worship many gods. The church wanted to help, so they began to pray.

After many years of praying, the church saved enough money to make the long flight to India. When they arrived, they saw small, busy villages. The Bedia ride their bikes or drink tea in little shops. Others carry water from the well to use at home. Kitchens are usually nothing more than a small pot and a fire. But, the church saw something else, too! They saw many people choosing to follow Jesus and being baptized. The church thought there were no Christians there, but God had answered their prayers!

Mandahar (MAHN-dah-har) is a new believer in Christ. He is a rice farmer. A few years ago, Mandahar was very sick, and no one could help him. Finally, a group of pastors came to the village and began to pray for Mandahar. God heard their prayers, and Mandahar was healed! God has changed Mandahar’s life.

Although there are now some Christians among the Bedia, it still is not easy. Pushba (PUSH-bah) believed in Jesus, but her father did not. He got very angry at her and would not allow her to stay in her home with her family. Pushba, her mother, and her older brother were some of the first Christians in her village. Pushba is praying for a church to be built near her village. She also is praying for the people in her village to understand the love God has for them and that they would not be hurt for believing in Jesus.

First Baptist Church continues to pray for the Bedia. They keep photographs of the Bedia hanging in their church to remind them to pray for the new believers and the people who still need to know about Jesus.
