Unique Learning System Alignment to Missouri Show-Me Standards and Grade Level Expectations
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has established Show-Me Standards and Grade Level Expectations that serve as statewide standards for use as a foundation for teaching and learning, Because federal law requires statewide assessment programs to measure academic achievement, the skills chosen for assessment with the Missouri Assessment Program-Alternate (MAP-A) are related to the same academic standards that are available in the general education curriculum. Within the Missouri’s Alternate Framework for Curriculum Development, skills and concepts in which students are instructed may range from access-level skills to skills that are challenging to higher-functioning students. The Unique Learning System includes lesson plans and materials that have been developed from a foundation of “Instructional Targets” that represent the essential skills from academic content standards in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. This alignment of the Instructional Targets to Missouri’s Grade Level Expectations is outlined in the attached documents. Additionally, this document lists suggested lessons, activities and materials from the Unique Learning System corresponding to these standards. Unique Learning System units are based on Science and Social Studies Topics. These are addressed in four grade level bands: Elementary (Grades K – 2); Intermediate (Grades 3 – 4); Middle School (Grades 5 – 7) and High School (Grades 8 – 11). Lesson plans within the Unique Learning System include a section defining “differentiated tasks.” These differentiated tasks are based on three levels of learning for students with significant cognitive disabilities. These differentiated levels assure that all students have an appropriate means of demonstrating knowledge and skills in instructional activities. These instructional tasks may serve as evidence in the MAP-A process.
Unique Learning System Differentiated Tasks Level 3 students typically are or have potential to learn to read text, and to independently demonstrate comprehension of learned information within modified content. Level 2 students require picture support and other direct support in learning and the demonstration of skills. Level 1 students typically require maximum support within instructional tasks. For these students, increasing the level of participation is the main objective. It will be important to find supports that encourage active response to lesson activities.
