of North East Region, Dr. Jitendra Singh formally inaugurated postgraduate (MD) program in Unani Medicine at the CCRUM’s Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Srinagar on April 17, 2018.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik highlighted the importance of Unani system of medicine in the country and its potential in terms of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare. He announced that the government

would also consider the proposal of starting teaching Unani Medicine at undergraduate level in Jammu & Kashmir.

Unani Medicine saying that it would definitely help the state to produce able teachers, researchers and medical officers to serve the state more efficiently.

Shri Bali Bhagat, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Medical Education, Government of Jammu & Kashmir appreciated the research work being carried out at the RRIUM, Srinagar and made a special mention of the effects of Regimen Therapy in treatment of different diseases particularly Waja‘ al-Mafās.il (Rheumatoid Arthritis).

The postgraduate (MD)program in two disciplines of Unani Medicine – Mu‘ālajāt (Medicine) and ‘Ilm al-Adviya (Pharmacology) – with seven seats each is undergoing at the RRIUM, Srinagar in affiliation with the University of Kashmir since academic session 2016–2017. However, the formal inauguration could not take place at that time due to unavoidable circumstances.

Prof. Asim Ali Khan takes over as Director General, CCRUM

Prof. Asim Ali Khan took over as the Director General (DG) of the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine

(CCRUM) on April 27, 2018. Prof. Khan is basically a scholar of Unani Medicine and carries with him about three decades of varied experience of academics, research and administration.

Prof. Khan is a dynamic personality and has a good vision for the development of Unani Medicine and has been making concerted efforts for its promotion at national and international platforms for about thirty years now. He is very keen to expedite research and development activities at the CCRUM and take Unani system of medicine to new heights. He has prior association with the CCRUM as an expert member of various technical and scientific committees.

Prof. Khan has been previously associated with

Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi as a professor of Mu‘alajāt (Medicine) at the School of Unani Medical Education and Research besides having various academic and administrative responsibilities. As International Students’ Advisor at Jamia Hamdard, he has been instrumental in developing many academic and research collaborations at international level and spreading the knowledge of Unani system of medicine to many countries like Nigeria, Congo, Malaysia, Syria, Iran, China and Bahrain. He has supervised and guided about 20

postgraduate research projects in Unani Medicine.

Prof. Khan has been on boards of studies of different academic institutions of Unani Medicine including Jamia Hamdard and Aligarh Muslim University. He has also been a member of various committees at Jamia Hamdard including Board of Management, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Academic Council. Besides, he has been on staff selection panels of Jamia Hamdard and various other organizations.

He has made significant contributions to scientific writing and has about 50 publications to his credit. These include five books, various research papers and 17 popular articles. He has contributed a chapter entitled ‘Essentials of Unani Medicine’ in ‘Textbook of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Allied and Molecular Medicine’ (Fourth Edition 2016). He has also been on editorial boards of Indian Journal of Unani Medicine, a semiannual journal of National Environment Science Academy (NESA) and Spreadsheet, an official newsletter of Jamia Hamdard. He has been delivering lectures and presenting papers at various national and international platforms and paying visits to Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Iran and United States of America for academic purposes.

The CCRUM extends warm welcome to Prof. Asim Ali Khan as its new DG and looks forward to his leadership for its all round development and faster progression of research in Unani System of Medicine.

In his introductory address, Prof. Asim Ali Khan, Director General, CCRUM emphasized that in order to conduct research, it is essential for researchers to update their skills from time to time and be well versed in research methodology. Prof. Khan further said that the CCRUM would be focusing on improving the quality and quantity of research and development activities in Unani Medicine in the coming years.

Prof. Ahmed Kamal shared his knowledge and expertise on

‘Development of new anti-cancer agents based on natural products scaffolds’ and highlighted key aspects related to the topic. He stressed the need for development of drugs to treat emerging diseases.

Workshop on Research Methodology

The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) organized a one-day Workshop on Research Methodology

at its headquarters in New Delhi on June 27, 2018. The workshop aimed at enhancing the capacity of participants and sensitizing them with the principles and techniques of research.

In this workshop, Dr. Vijay Kumar delivered a comprehensive lecture on ‘Percutaneous valve therapy – An overview of transcatheter aortic valve replacement’ and enlightened the participants with his in-depth knowledge on the subject. Emphasizing the need for validation studies and generating scientific evidence, he said that claims could not last long if they are not supported by convincing evidences. He noted that due to various reasons alternative medicine could not take its seat that it deserves which is unfortunate.

The workshop concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Shri RU Choudhury, Assistant Director (Administration), CCRUM. More than 100 participants including researchers, scientists and PG scholars of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Jamia Millia Islamia, A&U Tibbia College, Jamia Hamdard and Amity University besides researchers from the CCRUM benefited from the workshop.

National Consultative Meet on Intra–AYUSH Collaboration

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) organized a two-day ‘National Consultative Meet

on Intra–AYUSH Collaboration’ during April 28–29, 2018 in New Delhi. The meet aimed at assessing the core strengths of AYUSH systems and formulating strategies for intra-AYUSH collaborations in order to promote medical pluralism and ensure effective interface among the systems.

Inaugurating the meet, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for AYUSH highlighted the achievements of different research councils under the Ministry of AYUSH and core strengths of different Indian systems of medicine.

Speaking on the occasion, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH highlighted key provisions of National Health Policy 2017 and emphasized the need for integration and mainstreaming of AYUSH systems.

During the technical sessions, core achievements of AYUSH

research councils were presented by researchers of respective councils. The achievements of the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) in its research programs viz. preclinical research, clinical research, literary research, survey and cultivation of medicinal plants and drug standardization were presented by Dr. Ghazala Javed, Dr. Jamal Akhtar, Dr. Nighat Anjum, Dr. Amanullah and Dr. Rampratap Meena. In one of the technical sessions, potential areas for intra-AYUSH collaborations were also

integrated approach for promotion of different AYUSH systems and complement each other in better healthcare delivery to the mankind.

The meet also witnessed felicitation of Prof. Asim Ali Khan for assuming the charge as the Director General, CCRUM the previous day, conferring of CCRAS Awards and release of various publications

brought out by different research councils. Hindi version of National Unani Morbidity Codes and special issue of the CCRUM Newsletter published by the CCRUM were also released during the inaugural session. The meet was attended by researchers, academicians, policymakers and practitioners of AYUSH systems.

Brainstorming Session on Popularizing Unani Medicine

The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) organized a brainstorming session (BSS) on formulating

strategy for popularizing Unani Medicine in masses at its headquarters on June 20, 2018. The BSS had Dr. Mohammad Khalid Siddiqui, former Director General, CCRUM and Prof. YK Gupta, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi as resource persons.

In his introductory remarks, Prof. Asim Ali Khan, Director General, CCRUM briefed about the functioning and achievements of the Council and presented an overview of the facilities and infrastructure available at different institutes / centres

of the CCRUM. He stressed on developing collaborations with different healthcare and research institutions for popularizing Unani Medicine in masses.

Speaking on formulating strategy for popularizing Unani Medicine, Prof. YK Gupta

emphasized the need to develop medicines for such health issues for which very few medicines are available in the market. He also suggested developing medicines for general purposes and collaborating with many organizations rather than focusing on one or two.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mohammad Khalid Siddiqui urged to prioritize areas for research and development. He laid emphasis on identification of 4-5 diseases for Regimen Therapy and proper documentation of the data of different classical techniques.

The BSS concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Asim Ali Khan. All the researchers at the CCRUM headquarters attended the BSS.

Industry Consultation on Global Promotion of Indian Systems of Medicine

The Forum on Indian Traditional Medicine (FITM) organized an Industry Consultation on Global Promotion of Indian Systems of Medicine in New Delhi on May 18, 2018 with the

objective of facilitating an effective dialogue between the private sector and government, addressing challenges in implementing specific regulations/measures and providing a roadmap for successful global promotion of Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM).

Rajeev Kher, former Commerce Secretary to the Government of India and Dr. Akash Taneja, Joint Director General, Foreign Trade, Directorate General of Foreign Trade. The meet had participation from industry, academia and different ministries.

The FITM is a forum established by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India at RIS for all related actors to come together to contribute to pragmatic policy making and strategies for promotion of ISM.


International Day of Yoga Celebrated at CCRUM

The institutes had listed the events on Yogalocator, a mobile application launched by the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN) ahead of the event to help Yoga enthusiasts find the Yoga events being organized near them.

To commemorate the fourth International Day of Yoga, a host of events including live Yoga sessions and lectures on the benefits and importance of Yoga for body and mind were organized. All the employees of the Council gathered to flex their body at their respective workplaces early in the morning. The Yoga sessions started with warm-up exercises which were followed by meditation and a guided Yoga session based on ‘Common Yoga Protocol’ conducted with the help of Yoga demonstrators and teachers.

Following the Yoga sessions, public lectures were organized that highlighted Yoga as a unique

way to approach an individual’s health and well-being. It was described as one of the best ways to exercise and relax at the same

Hindi Workshop at CRIUM, Hyderabad

The Council’s Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Hyderabad organized a Hindi workshop at its

campus on June 26, 2018. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness among the officials about the official language policy and enhance their language skills.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Raj Narayan Awasthi, Hindi Officer, Electronics Corporation of India Limited

(ECIL), Hyderabad. He delivered a speech on ‘Official language policy of Government of India and its compliance’ and highlighted

constitutional provision of the official language. He also addressed important points related to Hindi translation.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Munawwar Hussain Kazmi, Director Incharge, CRIUM, Hyderabad urged the officials to do maximum work in Hindi language. The workshop concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Gulam Mohammed Husain, Incharge, Rajbhasha Section at the CRIUM, Hyderabad.


Swachhata Pakhwada at RRIUM, Aligarh

World No Tobacco Day Observed

The Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Aligarh observed Swachhata Pakhwada during April 21 – May 5, 2018 with the objective of bringing a fortnight of intense

focus on the issues and practices of cleanliness and hygiene.

The Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Lucknow organized a public meeting at its campus on

May 31, 2018 to observe World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). The meeting focused on ‘Tobacco and heart disease’.

Inaugurating Swachhata Pakhwada, Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmad, Deputy Director In-charge, RRIUM urged to maintain cleanliness and hygiene at workplace as well as at home in order to stay healthy and free of disease. He encouraged all the staff members to take part in cleanliness drive.

During the fortnight, an intensive cleanliness drive was undertaken in the institute premises. An essay writing competition on cleanliness was also organized to create awareness about hygiene and cleanliness and winners were awarded.

Dr. MA Khan, Deputy Director, CRIUM addressed the gathering and highlighted health hazards of tobacco consumption and various ailments caused by it. He informed that cancer, heart diseases, respiratory problems, tuberculosis, reproductive problems and diseases of intestine, liver and kidney are caused by tobacco. He also administered a public oath to the staff, patients and general public to completely avoid the use of tobacco in future.

WNTD is observed every year on 31st May to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco use, and advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

Medical Camps in Lucknow

The Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Lucknow organized three medical camps in June 2018

to counter outbreak of fever, vomiting and diarrhea in Faizullahganj locality of Lucknow.

The camps were organized taking suo motu action on a news report about the outbreak of the diseases in Faizullahganj Ward, Lucknow. The camps were organized in cooperation with local Corporator Shri Jaglal Yadav on June 9, 11 & 13, 2018. The patients were provided free consultation and Unani medicines by a team of Unani physicians and supporting staff led by Dr. ZH Siddiqui, Research Officer (Unani) and consisting of Dr. Mahboobus Salam, Research Officer (Unani); Shri Abdul Mobin Khan, Pharmacist; Shri Mohd. Zafar Khan, Driver; Shri Anwarulhaq Khan, Messenger; and Shri Sajid Ali, Mali.

Hindi Workshop at RRIUM, Mumbai

The Council’s Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM), Mumbai organized a Hindi workshop on May 9,

2018 at Sir JJ Group of Hospitals to enhance knowledge and skills of the officials for using the official language in day-to-day personal and professional works.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Shrinivas Chavan, Sir JJ Group of Hospitals in the presence of other guests namely Shri Vinod Kumar Sharma, Central Hindi Training Scheme, Mumbai and Shri Veerbhadra Sony, Assistant Director, Department of Rajbhasha, GPO, Mumbai.

In his inaugural address, Shri Chavan shared his experience related to Hindi language and its promotion and propagation. He stressed to make Hindi a

compulsory subject in the entire country so that the young and future generations of B and C regions could attain adequate knowledge of Hindi besides regional language.

Shri Vinod Kumar Sharma delivered a talk on ‘Conducting correspondence in simple Hindi language’ and stressed that one should prefer simple and easy-to-understand vocabulary to difficult ones. He also emphasized that Hindi is an easy-to-use language

provided we are committed towards it.

Shri Veerbhadra Sony expressed his views on ‘Role of internet in creation of the worldwide landscape of Hindi’ and said that internet has contributed immensely to Hindi by providing language learning resources. He informed that there are various websites and mobile applications that can be accessed for learning Hindi language.

World Thyroid Day Observed

The Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Lucknow organized a lecture on May 25, 2018 to observe

World Thyroid Day.

In his lecture, Dr. MA Khan, Deputy Director, CRIUM shed light on the importance of thyroid gland in the body and informed the gathering about the problems and difficulties faced by the human beings in either condition of decrease or increase of the secretion from the gland. He also highlighted various diseases caused due to thyroid imbalance like obesity, cardiac problems, body ache, pain in joints and respiratory diseases and advised to keep thyroid healthy with the right diet and exercise. The officers and staff of the institute as well as patients attended the lecture and benefited.

Training on Ùijäma (Cupping)

The Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM), Lucknow organized two training programs on H. ijāma

(Cupping) in April and June 2018 to develop skills of physicians in the application of this ancient therapy.

Kallakurichi Forest Division consists of six territorial ranges, of which five ranges namely Vellimalai, Gomukhi, Innadu, Cherapattu and Palapattu are in Kalrayan hills. The Kallakurichi range consists of scattered reserve forests at the foothills and plains of the division. The average annual rainfall is 1070 mm through the northeast monsoon in winter and the southwest monsoon in summer. The temperature varies between a minimum of 25 °C and a maximum of 40 °C.

The ethnobotanical survey was conducted in Kendikal, Muruvam, Sirumugil malai, Kallaru, Andiyappar malai, Sethur, Varam, Thottithurai, Pattivalavu and Manapachi forest areas in Vellimalai Range; Innadu, Kariyalur, Tharisukadu, Malenilavur, Maniyur palayam and Sozhiyaru falls forest areas in Innadu Range; Erukampatti, Vellarikadu, Vilvathi, Cherapattu, Mankombu, Killakadu and Kumballur forest areas in Cherapattu Range; and Kurathikundram, Megam falls, Koviyam falls, Gomukidam, Vellimlai lower slope, Parigam and Kalpadi Forest areas in Gomuki Range.

The survey team collected 471 plant specimens belonging to 157 species for herbarium documentation. Some of the important Unani medicinal plants include Abutilon indicum (L.) Sweet. (Kanghi), Acorus calamus L. (Waj Turki), Aegle marmelos (L.) Corr. (Belgiri), Alpinia galanga Willd. (Khulanjan), Anacardium occidentale L. (Kaju), Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) The survey team also visited some of the tribal areas and interacted with their inhabitants especially the local healers in order to collect information about folk claims of medicinal plants. Some of the important folk medicinal uses recorded are: Fruit of Mallotus philippensis (Lam.) Muell – Arg. (Senthuram) for skin diseases; Leaf of Datura metel L. (Karuoomathai) for skin diseases; Leaf of Ricinus communis L. (Amanaku) for stomach pain; Leaf

of Cardiospermum halicacabum L. (Mudakathan) for joint pain, Leaf of Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R. Br. (Veppalai) for wounds; Root of Achyranthes aspera L. (Nayuruvi) for toothache, Seed kernel of Strychnos nux-vomica L. (Etti) for indigestion; Bark of Terminalia arjuna (Roxb. ex DC.) W&A. (Arjun) for stomach pain; Leaf of Andrographis paniculata Nees. (Nilavembu) for fever; Flower bud of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merrill & Perry. (Kirambu) for toothache, Seed kernel of Caesalpinia bonduc L. (Karanjwa) for stomach pain, Fruit of Tribulus terrestris L. (Nerungil) for kidney stone; Leaf of Cardiospermum halicacabum L. (Mudakathan) for joint pain; Leaf of Acalypha indica L. (Kuppaimani) for skin diseases; Leaf of Scoparia dulcis L. (Semaikothamalli) for fever; and Whole plant of Phyllanthus amarus Schum. & Thom. (Kezhanelli) for jaundice.

Workshops on Content Development Strategy for Social Media

Officers from the CCRUM and its subordinate institutes participated in Workshops on Content Development

Strategy for Social Media, Level I & II held in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai during April–June 2018. The workshops aimed to impart training to AYUSH professionals in order to exploit the potentials of social media platforms in better outreach and effective propagation of research activities and services under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

The level I workshops covered various topics including digital marketing, understanding the core of content, various types and formats of content and content auditing and evaluation. The level II workshops focused on practical aspects and included hands-on training of various tools of social media.

The workshops held in Chennai were organized by the Central Council for Research in Siddha and the National Institute of Siddha during May 25–26 and July 6–7, 2018. The level I workshop at Chennai was inaugurated by Prof. Asim Ali Khan, Director General,

CCRUM. He appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of AYUSH and highlighted the importance of social media in promoting and propagating AYUSH systems.

The workshops held in Mumbai were organized by RRA Podar Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Cancer during April 6–7 and May 4–5, 2018, whereas the workshops held in Hyderabad were organized by the National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage during April 9–10 and May 7–8, 2018. Dr. Ghazala Javed, Research Officer (Unani) Scientist-IV, CCRUM coordinated all the workshops.
