Great Valley Solar Battery-Ready 200 MW Solar Facility
Great Valley Solar (GVS) includes four independent
solar sites with five separate SCADA licenses that tie
into a common point of interconnection (POI). The SCADA system for the sites controls eighty-two 2,500 kW inverters.
OpportunityGVS was unable to meet its full power supply and
earning potential due to a risk of circular Var flow
from site to site.
The site consists of eight 3 MW wind turbines with an
11 MW BESS and nine 1.22 MW Dynapower inverters.
OpportunityThe original control solution for this site consisted of
PLCs and SCADA with limited battery ramp control
for the variable wind output. High levels of variable
generation on the island and limited control capabilities
resulted in periodic wind curtailment.
SolutionThe PXiSE Power Plant Control solution provides real-
time feedback control of both active and reactive power
which improved site economics. The control solution
also integrates controls across the four sites for efficient
operations and is battery storage ready. The solution
includes an embedded OEM version of the OSISoft PI
data platform.
SolutionPXiSE deployed its Power Plant Control solution to autonomously coordinate the BESS for effective
frequency and Volt/Var control. PXiSE held frequency constant at 60 Hz in dynamic grid conditions and
demonstrated the ability to reduce thermal generation,
thereby producing cost savings.
