RESTRICTION Consult the reference staff about the restriction on this collection. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Arthur Unger was born on 29 March 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a cryptographer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism, graduating in 1949.

He worked at several magazines including Cars and Mechanix Illustrated before starting his own teen magazine called Datebook. In 1964, he bought the rights to several British articles and photographs of the Beatles and published them in Datebook. From this point on, the publication became an official fan magazine of the group. He toured with the Beatles in 1964 and 1965, conducting multiple interviews with them.

Unger was the editorial director of Great American Publications and Young World Press, the latter of which published advice books for teenage girls.

From 1971 to 1973, he was the entertainment editor for Ingenue and in 1973, he became the television critic for the Christian Science Monitor. He retired from the Monitor in 1988, but continued to write occasional articles for it until 1990 and Television Quarterly until 2002.

In addition to his magazine work, Unger was also the public relations director for the American Friends of Anne Frank Center.

Unger died on 9 July 2004 while vacationing in Paris with his partner, Raul Nuñez. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Arthur Unger Papers contain recordings, transcripts, and notes from his interviews with celebrities, his writings, Beatles publications, and personal materials. The collection is arranged into eight series: Interviews, Christian Science Monitor, Datebook, Magazines and Journals, Other Writings, Beatles, Personal, and Audiovisual.

The Interviews series is comprised of transcripts, notes, and articles from the hundreds of interviews Unger conducted with television and movie personalities, as well as others involved in the entertainment industry. The bulk of the interviews were done from 1965 to 1998 and they are arranged alphabetically.

One exception to the entertainment theme in his work is the interview he did with Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank. This interview came about through Unger’s proposal to write a script about the relationship between Anne and Peter Van Pels.

A small number of audio cassettes with interviews are included in this series and they are denoted with an asterisk (*) in the folder list, but Unger donated the complete collection of his interview recordings to the Archives of Recorded Sound at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

The Christian Science Monitor series contains reviews of television shows and feature articles Unger wrote for the newspaper, as well as correspondence and memos written between Unger and the paper’s editors. In addition to reviews and interviews with actors, he also wrote about the future of television technology for the Monitor. The materials in this series are arranged chronologically.

The Datebook series contains issues of the teen magazine from 1957 to 1968, correspondence from readers, promotional material, and business and financial records and is arranged by type of document.

The Magazines and Journals series consists of issues of the many publications Unger wrote for or edited throughout his career. They include Cars, Mechanix Illustrated, Television Quarterly, and Ingenue and are arranged alphabetically by title.

The Other Writings series includes Unger’s books and book proposals, short stories, plays, poetry, and freelance articles. Most of the books were published by Young World Press, for which Unger was editorial director, and were geared toward the same audience as the Datebook magazines. This series is arranged alphabetically by genre.

The Beatles series contains Beatles fan magazines, transcripts and tapes of Unger’s interviews with the group, press releases, and letters Unger wrote to the Beatles. In addition, the series includes newspaper clippings and a significant number of letters from Datebook readers concerning the controversy surrounding John Lennon’s comment about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus.

In 1998, Unger put up for auction some correspondence and other Beatles memorabilia. The auction book with descriptions of these items is included in the series which is arranged alphabetically by type of document.

The Personal series is arranged alphabetically by subject and contains correspondence, publicity clippings, Unger’s World War II orders and camp newsletters, and documents concerning the American Friends of Anne Frank Center. The series also includes a discussion with Unger as he was sorting through his interview files to be donated to the University of Missouri. The recording and transcript did not begin until Unger got to Ruth Gordon (he was reviewing his files in alphabetical order), but he discusses many entertaining stories from his encounters with the people he interviewed

that provide a more intimate portrait of the individuals than what would appear in his published articles.

The Audiovisual series contains audio cassette recordings of two interviews with Unger, one by WNYC radio and another by a man identified only as Rafael A. In the second interview, Unger discusses the inception of Datebook and how he came to be involved with the Beatles. Unger also recorded his own notes on topics covered in this interview. The audio tapes consist of an interview with Allen Grey, and Murray the K interviewing Brian Epstein. The audio discs include a two-record set and picture book of the Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” and interviews of the Beatles while they were touring the United States. None of the interviews on the tapes or discs involved Unger.
