UNESCO CITIES OF MUSIC

KANAZAWA, May 2015

Strengthen international cooperation between cities that have recognized creativity as a strategic factor of their sustainable development1

EDUCATION EXCHANGE

The Conservatory of Bologna, the University of Seville

and the Baroque Orchestra of Seville are collaborating

through the project AMANT (Academia de Música

Antigua), an exchange project dedicated to Baroque

music for young musicians

RESIDENCY PROJECTS

The Colombian artist Icaro Zorbar was invited by roBOt

Festival for an artistic residence in Bologna. The City of

Bogotá invited the curator of roBOt festival for a studio visit

series, in order to strengthen the future network activities

around exchanges and artistic residencies between Bologna

and Bogotà

ROUTES OF EMPEROR CHARLES V

In the framework of the Network of European Routes

of Emperor Charles V, Seville organized a meeting

with Bologna and Ghent

A concert of “Música Prima” at Real Alcázar of Seville

celebrated the event

WORLD YOUTH MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Hamamatsu World Youth Music Festival invited

the Choir “Piccolo Coro Athena” and the harpsichordist

Chiara Cattani from Bologna

FÊTE DE LA MUSIQUE AND MASCHSEE LAKE FESTIVAL

Hannover will invite artists from other UNESCO Cities of Music

to celebrate the festival “Fête de la Musique” on June 21st

The Maschsee Lake Festival of Hannover will host during

the summer a UNESCO City of Music stage, establishing

a showcase for bands and ensembles from other Music

cities worldwide

COOPERATION BETWEEN DIFFERENT SUBNETWORKS

Gent is twinned with Kanazawa, Creative City of Crafts

and Folk Arts. In the context of this twinning Gent

receives regular study visits of art students from Kanazawa,

and shares an exchange of Orchestras

Stimulate and enhance initiatives led by member cities to make creativity an essential component of urban development, notably through public and private partnerships2

MUSIC EXCHANGE

The Ghent festival GLIMPS, the Ghent Conservatory-School

of Arts of Gent and the Pop Academy of Mannheim share

a band exchange between Byron Bay and Filius Nox

GLIMPS FESTIVAL

In the last edition the festival GLIMPS of Gent programmed

Joycut from Bologna and Filius Nox from Mannheim

COOPERATION BETWEEN DIFFERENT SUBNETWORKS

Hamamatsu presented the project AH A MAY at Biennale

Internationale Design Saint-Étienne

The design division of the two Yamahas, Yamaha

Corporation and Yamaha Motor Co., exchanged their design

fields for the designers to stimulate each other’s imagination

and sought to create products that embodied their shared

image of “Yamaha”

Strengthen the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services3

CLASSICAL MUSIC MARATHON 2014

Glasgow brought together every major classical music

company in Scotland to celebrate their music in 10 hours

of concerts for an audience of 8.000 people

Partnerships built on this event are now continuing

with further projects and performances

Shared marketing allowed the smaller companies to reach

big audiences alongside the big companies

FEUX DE BRAZZA

Brazzaville supports the music events of the city as Feux de

Brazza, the International Festival dedicated to traditional

music from Congo and Africa

INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY

Mannheim and other Cities of Music celebrated

the UNESCO International Jazz Day

DEAR GREEN SOUND

Glasgow published a book which tells the story of 800 years of

Glasgow’s music, all kinds of music are included: rock, classical,

choral, medieval, traditional, informal, children’s club, electronic

The book tells the story through buildings and venues

so there's the connection with the City’s heritage,

with the shared memories of music lovers invited

to participate by sharing their stories online

Develop hubs of creativity and innovation and broaden opportunities for creators and professionals in the cultural sector4

FORUM PULSATIONS

Bogotá organized the Forum “Pulsations: Music in cities - public

policies and music industry”, sharing experiences from the four

main Colombian cities, and inviting Australia and Uruguay as

international experiences in policy making oriented to

strengthening music sectors and music creative economy

SYMPOSIUM ENJOY JAZZ

Mannhem organized the Symposium Enjoy Jazz,

an exchange workshop with international renowned

researchers and creative artists. Several professionals

from the other Cities of Music participated

Improve access to and participation in cultural life as well as the enjoyment of cultural goods and services, notably for marginalized or vulnerable groups and individuals5

BIG BIG SING

Through Big Big Sing Glasgow inspired 100.000 of people

to sing for music, for fun and for health

People of all kinds participate, including deaf, blind

and disabled participants and 80% of them are women

In 2015 Glasgow will celebrate women singer-songwriters

through the Big Big Song Book

HIPHOP LINKUP

The UNESCO HipHop LinkUp is a project run by a Network

of musicians and social workers from Mannheim and

Bogotá. This initiative gives young rappers from the Favelas

and the poorest German city districts the opportunity to write

and record songs together through the internet

LE TROIS LEADERS

On the occasion of the 4th edition of the International Jazz

Day, the City of Brazzaville launched the first album from the

blind musician band "Les Trois leaders"

Through their song full of emotion entitled "La paix”

(“Peace"), the blind musicians exhort the Congolese and

African people to unity, nonviolence and respect for human

dignity.

RESEARCH

Bogotá entered the World Cities Culture Forum in 2013,

initiating a process of building and sharing economic

indicators in music and culture with other world culture cities

The city started a research project on the impact of the

creative economy of music in the City, in cooperation with

the Colombian Ministry of Culture and Australia Arts Council

SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONALIZATION

In 2014, with a public call for music projects that intend to go

international. 11 winners have been selected among

musicians, artists and cultural professionals that thus

contributed to the international promotion of Bologna's

musical image
