How are you? Pretty nifty! How has art improved your life? Art is upgrading and downgrading my life—drastically and constantly. It keeps getting me into kooky sit-uations that force me to use some unusual problem solving skills. How do you feel about the world today? A little bird told me that the world will survive.

What starts new work? I am always twiddling a lot of different things in my mind. Usual-ly I feel stoked about several ideas and whatnots—but only a few of them will end up working out. What finishes new work? A dead-line or boredom, though I have too many unfinished personal projects that keep combining and evolving into different kinds of nonsense.What do you see when you close your eyes? A distort-ed slide-show of my brain.

When was your first paid illustration job? When I was twelve, I made a poster for a recycling company about scrap metal. I bought a few frogs and an aquarium.When is love not enough? At the end of the world. When do you let loose? On special occasions—I like to create my own holidays...

When does that spark of creativity occur for you? It’s unpredictable—my mind’s always going. It’s just having the time and means to put ideas to paper, to a track or to the screen.When is the right time? Never and always.When are you going to take over? Who are you?I’m a guy who makes a lot of different stuff.Who is this for?First of all, for myself—but I think my work is for all. I don’t make work for some specific group of people. I think everyone can find something for themself.Who influences you?There is no one specific person. A lot of my influences come from the Russian avant-garde.

Why do you create?It always comes from inside. I’ve always wanted to show everything that is in me my own way.Why excep-tional use of space?Because the work becomes a part of that space—and if I use all the space the viewer will concentrate only on my work. My work with space works together.Why mixed media?Because it is easy to find materials, you don’t need to spend a lot of money and they always provide a very full range of textures. I mix them with simple shapes and colors.

Where do you see yourself five years down the road?I see me having my own label and really pushing Chicago music to the forefront.Why the name Tree?My real name is Tremaine, so it’s an abbrevi-ation of my name. “Tree” was given to me as a toddler by my grandparents—it kinda stuck.Why #Soultrap?I didn’t mean to create a genre—it just happened. It’s a fusion of soul samples and southern drum kits.Why music?It was one of the few things I was great at.
