Wiki: what is It??
• Wiki is Hawaiian for quick or quickly• It’s an online collaborative authoring tool allowing
for anyone (with an account) to:– Create
– Edit
– Delete

How can I use it at my library?
• Replace the reference desk notebook!– Particularly challenging assignments
• Environment to draft policies and manuals
• Promote local attractions and services
• Promote user services– Solicit feedback (begin the dialogue)– Easy to update subject guides
• Use it as a teaching tool
• Replace your website

Let’s give it a try!
• Go to Steveapedia.pbwiki.com
• In the Sidebar Select INCOL
• Find your name on the list and click on it
• Login Password: INCOL (all caps)
• Select “No Template” and hit “Create New Page”
• Type in the box
• When finished hit “save”
How do I:
• Select the right one for my library?– http://www.wikimatrix.org/ (wiki choice wizard)
• Create one?– Hosted or software– Ads or no ads– PB Wiki– Wetpaint (this one has a ton of templates to choose
from)– Media Wiki

• 2 sides to RSS: – Pulling the information in– Pushing the information out

• Copy the URL and paste it into your reader
• Find one of these symbols on the page and click on it– Either directly add it– Copy and paste the URL

Pushing information to users with RSS• Libraries have “News” and other items that we
want to communicate with our users e.g.:– After school homework help– ESL and other class offerings– New books related to specific genres– All services!!
