Understanding Language Acquisition
Learn how the English language is acquired and constructed with the latest state-of-the-art instructional methodology for working with English learners (ELs) at any level. This workshop highlights research-based strategies to understand language acquisition theory, with the opportunity to connect the theory to practice. Participants leave with an understanding of language proficiency, the linguistic needs of ELs, and how teachers can promote the language development of their ELs. Participants acquire strategies for using resources, such as the Longman dictionaries, incorporating the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in lessons, and focusing on teaching academic vocabulary, emphasizing the etymology and forms of language.
OUtcOmes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Define linguistic terms.
• Summarize how the English language is acquired and constructed.
• Appropriately instruct students at various language proficiency levels.
• Implement strategies that support English language development for ELs.
