What is Medical Appraisal? Medical appraisal for doctors is
a process of facilitating self- review that is supported by the information collected from the full scope of doctor’s medical practice.
It is a key for the doctors to demonstrate their fitness to practice to whatever branch of medical practice they belong.
How process of medical appraisal works?
The process of medical appraisal for doctors work according to this flow;
Purposes of Medical Appraisal
To reflect on the practice and performance of doctors in coordination with their appraiser for demonstrating that they meet the principles and values of Good Medical Practice on continuous basis.
To help the doctors in planning and improving their professional development.
Identification of their learning requirements. To ensure that the doctors are performing in
line with their organizational requirements.
Who conducts and monitors medical appraisal?
Appraiser is appointed within the organization who is a senior GMC licensed doctor.
He/ she coordinates with the doctor on annual basis to review and reflect on the reports of doctor’s medical practice.
The reports of the appraisal for doctors are presented to the Responsible Officer who further presents them to the GMC for revalidation.
Medical Appraisal leading to Revalidation
The process of revalidation is used to identify whether the licensed doctors are fit to practice or not.
Quality appraisal is the key to effective revalidation.
Revalidation takes into account the reports and data gathered through appraisal as well as through local clinical governance system.
