Born and raised in Tonbridge I’m almost a local girl.

I’ve certainly visited the White Rock Pub a few times over the years.

Educated at Bennett Memorial School in Tunbridge Wells, I worked for Coutts, The Barnabas Trust Carrotty Wood and then went to 'Vicar School', Oak Hill Theological College, in London to do a Theology Degree.

I went there hoping to go off and travel the world as a missionary, but God had other plans; and it’s been as equal an adventure being an Ordained minister in the Church of England for over 20 years now.

I’m really looking forward to Parish ministry again, having been Vicar of St George’s Weald until about 3 years ago when I moved to Chaplaincy at Christ’s School Richmond, in Surrey.

Christ’s School for the last three years has been a wonderful educational and exhilarating time of ministry. Working with teenagers and adults has certainly taught me a lot about life and indeed myself. I’ve certainly got some stories to tell, only a few of which can make it into

sermons!

I hope to bring back a lot of this experience into the richness and variety of Parish life. I will also be the Chaplain at Bethany School in Goudhurst; and that I think will partner really well with life here in Underriver and Stone Street.

I’m married to John, a lifelong Liverpool Football Club fan and Assistant Vice-principal at Skinners Kent Academy in Tunbridge Wells. We have two Children, Esther at Judd in Tonbridge and Freddie at Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys, also a lifelong Liverpool fan! We have a little crazy dog, Coco, who is loving life and the space in the Vicarage - as are we all.

I’m looking forward to being your Vicar and getting to know you.

“I have come that they might have life, life in all its fullness”, says Jesus in John’s gospel. Let’s live this message out together as the people of God in this place.

As printed in the order of Service for 3rd September

HARVEST FESTIVAL LUNCH

We are holding our Harvest Lunch as usual after the Harvest Festival Service which this year is on 1st October at 11.15am. There is a flier enclosed with the Newssheet which gives further details.

As usual, we are very much dependent on the good will and generosity of Underriver cooks and helpers to make this a success. If you are able to cook a cottage or apple pie, or provide help with the drinks or serving up, or in any oth-er way, I should very much like to hear from you (telephone 832408 or email [email protected]).

This is a happy occasion which is one of the highlights of the St. Margaret’s year but we also have in mind those who enjoy far less of this world’s good things than we do, living in one of the loveliest parts of England. All the pro-ceeds go to Christian Aid as in previous years. This year the charge for children remains the same as previously but reluctantly I have decided that it would be right to double the charge for adults to £10 per head. This had been £5 for a number of years and £10 is still a very good deal for two home-cooked courses, with all the proceeds going to the charity.

This year will be the first Harvest celebration with our new vicar Serena Willoughby and her husband John so it would be lovely to see as many of you as possible at the Lunch.

As the Flower Show and St Margaret’s 150th Celebration were on the same weekend this year the Village Hall was full to bursting with masses of entries in the flowers, fruit and veg Classes with a dead heat on points in two classes which is very unusual. Also we had Judy Graydon’s amazing village archive which is getting more detailed every time I see it. This time early school photos have had the pupils identified. Only the flower arranging classes were depleted because of the fantastic floral display in the church which meant our normal entrants had been hijacked!

The weather could have been kinder, it poured with rain for most of the afternoon but it meant that everyone stayed in the hall and really enjoyed look-ing at the winners and losers and eating Sarah Owlett’s teas. The fruit on the presidents stall moved inside at the height of the storm and instantly sold out, thank you Fionna, we would have really missed it if your granddaughter hadn’t been on hand to deliver to us.

The next thing on the agenda is the AGM which is on Thursday 26th October.

Live shows on stage

From Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th September Tunbridge Wells’ Assembly Hall Theatre (01892 530613) will be staging The Wedding Singer, a stage musical based on the Broadway film. In 1985, Hair is huge, greed is good and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey’s wed-ding singer. When his own fiancée dumps him at the al-tar, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Can sweet-natured Julia lure Robbie back or is he going to see her head off down the aisle with Wall Street bad boy Glenn?

From Saturday 16th to Saturday 21st September the new season at Ton-bridge’s Oast Theatre (01732 363849) will kick off with Our Country’s Good, based on Thomas Keneally’s novel The Playmaker. In 1789 Australia a young married lieutenant is directing rehearsals of the first play ever to be staged in that country. With only two copies of the text, a cast of convicts and one lead-ing lady who may be about to be hanged, conditions are hardly ideal … The play is based on a true story and sounds very promising.

On Thursday 21st September at the Assembly Hall (01892 530613) Russian State Opera will perform Puccini’s Madam Butterfly. Set in Japan at the turn of the 20th century, this wonderful opera is based on a true story of a Japanese geisha girl who had a son by ‘marriage’ to an American naval officer who soon deserted her, leaving her heartbroken. The opera includes One fine day and the Humming Chorus and will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

On Thursday 28th September at Tunbridge Wells’ Trinity Arts Theatre (01892 678678) Merely Theatre will stage their version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Young lovers and would-be thespians escape the city and lose themselves in the woodland realm of feuding forest gods. They become entan-gled in the magic, thanks to an impish trickster who gives them all eyes for someone (or something) else. The company is said to have a stripped-back style that puts the focus on story-telling and on making theatre accessible, entertain-ing and energised - but maybe traditionalists should make further enquiries.

Screened live performances and encores

September screened performances will include:

New Ladies Choir in Underriver

After the success of the U Fest choir I have managed to arrange for Dani Shirtcliffe ( Richard and Elizabeth’s talented daughter-in-law) to run a new and exciting 5 week choir workshop in Underriver Village Hall on a Monday morn-ing at 9.30am. Dani is an amazing teacher with a great relaxed style and I know that she will make it really fun.

The dates are on Mondays as follows :-

11th September 18th September 25th September 2nd October 9th October

The session will run for 1 hr 20 mins followed by tea and coffee and will be £10 per week payable in advance by cheque as a 5 week block. You do not have to be able to read music to join in as Dani helps us learn by providing training tracks via e mail and you just click on them to listen to them at home its quite simple and in the lessons we learn by rote although you are welcome to have the music if that’s how you prefer to sing! The songs will be from a huge range of styles and genres so there should be something for everyone the sessions are informal and great fun. Its incredibly uplifting to hear us all together once we have learnt a song - so why not give it a try?

To make this worthwhile we need a minimum of 12 people so I would ask that if you are interested you come back to me asap and we can arrange pay-ment etc. Please pass this on to anyone in the village or beyond that you think might like to come along everyone welcome. I really hope that you will be able to join us and if we get enough interest we may even be able to continue until Christmas.

I look forward to hearing from you my e mail is [email protected] or phone me on 01732 833943

Memorial Concert for Heather Clemence

There have been a number of difficulties since the original flyer was drafted.

The London Scottish Pipe Band has an engagement in Belgium that weekend so there will be no piper.

There are some who may be relieved about this.

Amy Manford has been given a leading part in a London Musical and her con-tract forbids her from other engagements. She is replaced by Carly Owen a young Welsh soprano.

Liam Crangle, the accompanist, became unable to take part and he has been replaced by Marie Otaka, a young Japanese pianist.

Jane Chee Ng, the violinist, has suffered a wrist injury which sadly means she cannot play at all until it is completely cured. We have decided not to replace her but to increase the amount of organ music.

For reasons of timing the Mascagni item has been omitted.

Tickets are selling well, so far about 55 out of possible 120 or so and many generous donations have been received both from those attending and those who cannot.

If you cannot find an application from please call me on 01732 833338 or email me at [email protected]
