VisionStatementTheLionelHamptonSchoolofMusicwillbemusicallycomprehensiveandnationallyrecognized,providingalearningenvironmentinwhichourstudentsperform,analyze,teach,andcreatemusic.Facultywillinspirestudentstobeintellectuallycurious,studentswillcultivateanatmosphereofprofessionalawareness,mutualsupport,collaboration,andoutreachtoensuresuccessinevolvingoccupationalandculturalconditions.

AccompanistsAtthebeginningofeachsemester,studioteacherssubmittheiraccompanyingneedstothepianofaculty.PriorityisgiventoUpperDivisionStanding(UDS)juries,Concerto/AriaCompetitionentrants,andgraduatedegreerecitals(mostvoicestudentswillbeassignedtoDr.GustavoCastro-Ramirerz,[email protected]).Iftherepertoireexceedsacertainabilitylevel,theaccompanyingcoordinator(Dr.EdeidaLarti)maynotbeabletoassignastudentpianist,inwhichcasethestudentmusthireaprofessionalpianist.Inmostcasesstudentsneedingapianistforregularjuries,undergraduatedegreerecitals,orotherperformancesalsomusthireapianist.StudentsshouldcontacttheirstudioinstructororDr.Larti([email protected])foralistofrecommendedpianists.Oncetheassignmentismade,studentsshouldcontacttheirassignedpianists.Studentsareresponsibleforarrangingameetingearlyinthesemesterwithpianiststoschedulerehearsals,lessons,andperformancesandtoprovidethepianopart.Ifthepianistdoesnothearfromthestudentwithinthefirstmonthofthesemester,thestudentforfeitsthepianist.Studentsarerequiredtogiveapianistatleasttwoweekstopreparebeforethefirstrehearsal.Ifstudentscomelateormissatleasttworehearsalswithoutcontactingthepianistbeforehand,thecoordinatorwillreassignthepianisttothedifferentproject.Therefore,itisimportantforstudentstocommunicatewiththeirpianiststhroughoutthesemester.Studentpianistsareassignedonlyforspecificevents—UDS,Concerto/AriaCompetition,orgraduatedegreerecitals—andshouldbecompensatedforadditionalwork.PianistsenrolledinMUSA315/515CollaborativePianoarestronglyencouragedtobringtheirsoloiststoperformfortheclass(Friday1:30-2:20pm).AdvisingLHSOMprovidesone-on-oneadvisingtoallundergraduatestudents.Weareheretohelpguideyouthroughtheacademicprocessandtoprovideresourcesforyou.AssociateDirectorLeonardGarrison([email protected])coordinatesadvisingforallundergraduatemusicmajorsandservesastheiradvisorfortheirfirstsemester.WhatisAcademicAdvising?AcademicAdvisingisarelationshipinwhichthestudentandadvisorarepartnersinplanningacademic,personalandcareergoals.Itfostersintellectualandpersonaldevelopmentthatleadstoacademicsuccessandself-directedlife-longlearning.Thispartnershiprequiresproactiveparticipationandinvolvementbybothparties,whoeachhaveclearresponsibilitiesforensuringthatthispartnershipissuccessful.(NACADA,2005&StudentAdvisingandLearningCenteratWashingtonStateUniversity)StudentResponsibilities:• Scheduleandkeepregularappointments• Gatherallnecessaryinformationandquestionspriortomeeting• Cometoregistration/advisingappointmentprepared

DirectedStudy:Amethodofdeliveringspeciallydesignedcontenttoastudentoutsideofthenormalclassroomenvironment.Astudentcannotrepeatthesamedirectedstudy.Directedstudycoursescannotduplicateanexistingcourse.
