YOUR ROUTES TO LEGAL PRACTICE
The traditional route to becoming a
barrister or solicitor starts by taking a
qualifying law degree (LLB).
Alternatively, you can take a degree in
another subject and still become a lawyer
by taking a one year law conversion
course (GDL - Graduate Diploma in Law)
or our Master’s course (MA Law) after you
have graduated.
There is no disadvantage to entering the
profession via this route.
BARRISTER SOLICITOR
NON LAW DEGREE
Alternatively, you can start your
route to becoming a solicitor or
barrister by studying a non-law
degree, and after you’ve
graduated, taking our law
conversion course,
or Master’s Degree.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
Our LLB (Hons) Law is a Qualifying Law
Degree (QLD) recognised by the Bar
Standards Board (which regulates barristers
and specialised legal services businesses in
England and Wales) and the Solicitors
Regulation Authority (which regulates solicitors
of England and Wales) for the purpose of
exemption from the academic stage of their
professional examinations. This means that
you can move directly onto a Bar Professional
Training Course (BPTC) if you want to be a
barrister, or the Legal Practice Course (LPC) if
you want to be a solicitor*.
* Please note that the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is reforming solicitor qualification in England and Wales
by introducing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). At the time of publication, the SRA intends to introduce
the SQE in 2021. Follow law.ac.uk/blog to keep up to date on the latest legal news on the SQE and other topics.*92% of our full-time UK LLB students graduating in 2017 secured employment or further study within six months of successfully completing their course.

below £25,000, your repayments will stop
• Outstanding payments are written off
