1. An apparatus in which environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, can be controlled; often used for growing bacterial cultures, hatching eggs artificially, or providing suitable conditions for a chemical or biological reaction.

2. Medicine An apparatus for maintaining an infant, especially a premature infant, in an environment of controlled temperature, humidity, and oxygen concentration.

3. A place or situation that permits or encourages the formation and development, as of new ideas: a college that was an incubator of new

approaches to sociology.

When exploring the opportunities of this site, my main goals became:

1. Create an environment that lured a pedestrian from one node of entertainment to another by the

music spilling into the street and inviting people to stay. This will create a more unified entertain-

ment district rather than the one that exists today.2. Create a site that lets people interact with the building without having to enter. This way, anyone will feel welcomed to the site and therefore bring

the entire demographic of Montgomery together in unity.

3. Fully utilize the Riverwalk. Pedestrians expect to make it to their destination in five minutes of

walking. Adding an entertainment node at this site provides another stop for the

Pedestrians and will increase the amount of traf-fic towards the river. Currently, the Riverwalk is just a little too far to be seen as a connection to the

Biscuit’s Stadium and the Alleyway.

Thesis year begins with an exploration of downtown Montgomery, Alabama. we discuss

the city’s qualities and how it needs improvement. Each student is allowed to

choose their site and their program.

lighting studiesAnother aspect of thesis was to spend Spring semester studying how light can compliment your design. I did a series of screen designs to see how the light changes character during the day and how the building glows during the night.

chicago, ilchicago children’s hospital

This Chicago Children’s hospital is located in a medical district of the city, but has a site condition unlike any other buildings on its block: Mies Van

der Rohe Way intersects Chicago Avenue directly in front. This allows for views down the street from the hospital as well as a straight-on view of

the hospital from several blocks away.

My approach to the design of this children’s hospital was to give the children a sense of escape from the hurt and fear a hospital can

possess. Every patient room as a window facing into the city as well as towards the river. There are multiple small public balcony spaces and a

large scale exterior cafeteria. The lobby and other programmatic spaces possess a “building block” theme. This is symbolic of building from strength

and getting better as well as intriguing the children visually and helping them not feel overwhelmed in these large spaces.

Our studio was asked to redesign the entrance to the architecture building on Auburn University’s campus. The entry currently lacks rain protectiion and guidenace into the building.

We were asked to create an entrance to bring visitors into the facility.

I wanted to create a mulitfunctional form which provided rain protection, a series of gathering spaces for the occupants, and

a place that guided you from the concourse into the buidiing.

The main objective of this assignment was to be able to work colllaboratively to research, explore and understand an existing site in

Rome, Italy. Our site, Piazza de San Cosimato, is a triganular site that houses a fresh market every morning using old portable structures.

However, the site also acts as a play area for the

neighborhood children.

Our approach was to design a facility to be open air market and provide spaces for the

visitors to sit and enjoy the rest of the piazza without invading the play space.

Another issue in Rome is graffiti on buildings. However, it can be admired as it adds color, livli-

ness, and art to the city streets. I designed a water wall (using and circulating

water collections from the roof) that is mimiking the colorful nature of the graffiti but protected

the facility from being vandalized.

Our studio was asked to design a house on an 8-acre parcel of property outside of Auburn, Alabama. The whouse will be of a modest scale, designed for a couple wealthy enough to have

an expensive hobby. Every solution will have to confront several basic issues: the change in grade (20’-0”); easement restriction limiting the placement of the house in the site; the alluvial terrain, the new growth forest; and the adjacency to water. The house

should include the following spaces:200 s.f. space for gathering

150 s.f. space for eating150 s.f. space for preparing food

100 s.f. space for storing food200 s.f. creative space

Our studio chose to incorporatie raiising horses as the expensive hobby of the couple. So, I designed a stable that incorportated passive air cooliing and the appropriate spaces for tending to the horses. The stable, located in a shaded area downhill from the residence, provides an easy accessible space to escape

and enjoy their tranquil hobby.

At some point, every architect must confront the most difficult question we

can ask about a building “but, what will it look like…?” It is a difficult question as we

spend so much of our time during the design process looking at all the other

issues of feasibility and accommodation. Issues of appearance, composition, and character are often left to the very end.

There are many reasons that decision concerning image and icono-

graphic are delayed. Plans can take a long time to generate, and programmatic ac-

commodation carries with it the ideological baggage that form must follow function.

Many architects are left with either a false sense of compositional inevitability, or allow

contextual arguments to mandate a certain stylistic approach.

In the project description, our studio was

asked to design a façade of a small bookstore in downtown Opelika. The store

will have several stories of books, a display window, a reading room, seats in-

tegrated with the windows and a residence on the top floor privately

accessible.

The leaf drawing was an assignment of Summer Option, the quick paced entry process of the architecture program in

Auburn University. This project was limited to three days. The leaves were chosen by the student and meant to portray the

leaf as realistic as possible.

During our fifth year, we were visited by Auburn graduatue Kelly Wilson. He spent seven days with us and taught us how to portray our drawing using one color, Poppy Red, and one stroke direction. His drawings are to emphasize the character of natural light in your building.
