My professors at Marist stressed soft skills just as much as technical skills and made the effort to build teacher-student relationships that extend beyond class sessions and semesters. With the help of my professors, my technical skills and networking put my foot in the door for many opportunities; but, the emphasis on soft skills is what secured my offers in a work-study program, an on campus research opportunity, multiple internships, and finally, my full-time offers upon graduation. My software development education at Marist, the community created by collaboration in the classroom, and my participation in extracurriculars pushed my expectations of what a small school can provide.

I can honestly say that I would not be where I am at this moment without Marist. We hate to say our professors were right, but all the group projects and assignments prepared me for my current job. Every assignment I had, pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to use new skills I did not know I had. My professors challenged me to go above and beyond; I didn’t realize how important it was until now. When the time came to think about my future, Career Services was instrumental in helping me throughout the job searching and interview process. They were my cheerleaders and incredibly supportive in making me feel as though the sky was the limit.

At Marist, I received an unwavering amount of support from faculty and peers that really helped me reach where I am today. While in the Social Work Program, I was able to volunteer as a tutor at the Poughkeepsie Middle School, and had an internship at a local nursing home. Both of these experiences reminded me of my passion for helping others, and solidified my drive to want to make a career out of bettering the lives of others. With the support of my professors and peers, as well as the experiences that Marist College provided to me, I felt more than prepared to apply to graduate programs, and obtain my master’s degree at NYU.

Marist taught me to leap boldly, unapologetically. The space encouraged tight-knit connections with professors I now call life mentors, with cafeteria strangers I now call forever friends. Because of Marist, I am unafraid to be my vulnerable, authentic self and guide others to lead with optimism: the power of resilience and curiosity combined.

The academic experiences that Marist provided me, coupled with unwavering support from my professors and the Marist Center for Career Services, played a critical role in my success entering the job market. The faculty and staff make your goals for your career their priority. They help you hone your strengths, identify areas for growth, and help you leverage your transferable skills when applying to varying positions. I was introduced to many Marist alumni that were eager to provide both insight into their roles and advice on getting my foot into the finance industry. While I was determined to succeed, the faculty fueled this drive and helped me to land a top finance internship in NYC and full-time position before graduation.

I valued the student to faculty ratio at Marist because it allowed me to make great connections with professors while also gaining a deeper understanding of the academic material. My interactions with professors at Marist has given me confidence in making the same kind of connections with the professors in my professional program.
