The internship programme ran for the first time last year and was a great success resulting in one of our students being offered, and accepting, a permanent job with the host company, KMF Ltd. Building on this success, we are pleased to report there were many more internships available for summer 2010. The importance of the internship programme is explained by Professor Mihaela Kelemen, Course Director for the MA programmes: ‘The internship programme is seen by many of our students as the highlight of the Masters courses offered by KMS. For many, it is the opportunity to put in practice some of the challenging theories and models of management presented during the year and assess their usefulness in a real life situation. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate some of the teamwork and leadership skills acquired during the year.’ All the students who applied have been through a formal interview procedure with representatives from the host companies and Professor Mihaela Kelemen and Dr Colin Rigby from Keele Management School. The successful candidates will start working on their projects during the summer and we’ll report back in the next issue of the newsletter on how the students found the experience. Learning Technology in Sweden

Dan Harding, Keele Management School’s Learning Technologist, took advantage of the Erasmis mobility Scheme to visit Luleå University in Sweden.

The administrative mobility aspect of the scheme gives university administrators the opportunity to travel abroad to partner institutions with the aim of fostering knowledge transfer and sharing good practice. Dan describes his experience….

“Visiting Luleå was an invaluable experience. The friendly and approachable nature of the staff (and love of coffee!) helped me to feel welcome and they were happy to share their knowledge. Thanks to an excellent programme, I was able to take an extensive tour of their impressive facilities including a trip to their second campus in Piteå which houses subjects relative to my own undergraduate studies. Although it shares many similarities with Keele, observing how learning technology has been utilised at another institution offered possible solutions to challenges currently faced within my role. During the visit I was able to meet a variety of individuals including students, academics, technicians and administrative staff who all offered their own interesting perspectives. The surrounding area is also of outstanding natural beauty. I would recommend the Erasmus Administrative Mobility Scheme as a great way to boost personal development.”

Academics and the Media

From time to time the expertise of our academics is called upon by the national and local media to provide expert commentary on world and local events. In a series of live BBC Radio Stoke interviews (in late 2009 and in early 2010), Professor Costas Milas commented on the prospects of the UK economy. He pointed out that although a double dip recession did not look to be the most likely outcome for 2010, UK growth relied heavily on (i) UK interest rates staying close to their current low levels, (ii) growth in the Eurozone area (our main trading partner), picking up substantially and (iii) UK consumption expenditure (the main driver of domestic growth), remaining robust despite the increase in the VAT rate.

Since 2009, Costas has participated as a regular contributor at the Monetary Roundtable, organised by the Bank of England. Costas explains “This is a prestigious event which attracts, by special invitation only, a limited number of academics and City economists. It takes place twice a year. The aim of the meeting is to bridge the gap between Bank of England policy-makers, academics and practitioners. During the meeting, current economic policy issues and the way forward are discussed in a very informal way.”

Since the beginning of 2010, Costas has contributed as a Business commentator to Kathimerini and To Vima, Greece’s two largest and most prestigious national newspapers.’

Throughout the year the University hosts a number of Visit and Open days for prospective students to take a look around the campus and find out more about the courses we offer. For our overseas students, and for UK students who are not able to visit us in person, KMS has put together a ‘virtual visit day’ with all the course information and general information about the School together on one ‘mini’ website. We hope to have the virtual visit day accessible from the school web pages www.keele.ac.uk/kms

very soon so please keep visiting the site and take a ‘virtual’ look around the School. We’d be happy to receive feedback about your virtual visit, so please email Pat at [email protected] with any ideas or suggestions you may have.

All of the photographs used on the site and the student quotes are from our current, and recent, students so you may see somebody you recognise?

KMS was delighted to host the ‘Annual Distinguished Lecture in Economics’ in February this year. The lecture was given by Sir John Gieve, Chairman of VocaLink, the main provider of payment systems in the UK. Sir John was previously Deputy Governor of the Bank of England and during his career has been a member of the Board of the Financial Services Authority, the UK regulator of financial services, and of the Financial Stability Forum. From 2001 to the end of 2005, he was the Permanent Secretary of the Home Office prior to which he spent twenty years at the UK Treasury as private secretary to three Chancellors – Lawson,

Major and Lamont, and rose to be head of the Budget and Public Services Directorates.

The lecture attracted a large audience of over 200 people, comprising members of staff, students and the public and was reported by Bloomberg news. Sir John discussed the causes and consequences of the recent financial crisis and emphasised the importance of rescuing Northern Rock. He concluded by saying that careful co-ordination of fiscal, regulatory and monetary instruments is necessary to avoid, or at least limit, the damage which can be caused by future financial crises.

KMS hosts ‘Soft Skills’ Seminars in collaboration with the Chartered

Management InstituteIn February, March and April this year the School was pleased to hold a series of ‘soft skills’ training events organised in collaboration with the Staffordshire Branch of the Chartered Management Institute. The interactive workshops were designed to complement and enhance academic study and focussed on ‘Communication Skills’; ‘Coping with Stress’ and how to ‘Promote Yourself’.

The sessions were led by Jan Ivan-Duke whose career has involved leadership roles within the public and private sectors, including military service, local government, the NHS and private enterprise and John Smart, who was previously head of Technical Training for British Telecommunications plc and is now Managing Director of Kapability Consultants.

The events were attended by a mix of management professionals and KMS students, with up to 75% of available places being preferentially allocated to KMS students.

Further sessions are planned the next academic year; please keep an eye on the Events section of our website, www.keele.ac.uk/kms/newsevents/

Dr Azimjon Kuvandikov

Azimjon joined us in February this year as a Lecturer in Accounting and Finance, having completed his PhD on the topic of ‘Employment effects of corporate takeovers’ at The York Management School, University of York.

Azimjon began his career with KPMG and decided to take an MA in Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University Management School. He then worked for the Government of Uzbekistan’s Privatisation Agency, participating in the privatisation projects of large strategic enterprises within a World Bank project. This experience led him to want to learn more about corporate governance issues which he did through a nine month study programme as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Oxford through the Chevening Scholarship Programme.

Whilst writing his PhD, Azimjon gained valuable teaching experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and trained for a formal

higher education teaching qualification within the ‘Preparing Future Academics’ programme which he is planning to further enhance through the Keele Teaching and Learning programme.

Azimjon talks about his experience since joining Keele Management School

‘At KMS I have taught the Financial and Management Accounting module, which was a significant experience for me. Teaching such a large group of students was a challenging task. However, mentoring and advice provided by KMS Accounting staff was very useful.

I have also hugely benefited from the research environment of the School and learned a lot from the research seminars organised by the economics group. I am planning to further extend my own research in collaboration with the School’s economics group research expertise. Furthermore, since joining the School, I have attended the European Academy of Management (EURAM) 2010, in Rome, where I presented two papers. I have also been able to obtain some funding from the Economics and Social Research Council (ESRC) to further develop my research skills in order to be able to advance my empirical research.

I am delighted to be a member of this dynamic School, where I can further develop my research and teaching skills and am planning to undertake some research on corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, boards of directors and shareholder versus stakeholder orientation in accounting practices. Furthermore, I am looking forward to teaching again in the next academic year!’

Dr Anita ManganAnita completed her PhD at Keele in 2007, following a BA from University College Dublin (UCD) and Masters Degree from both the University of Exeter and UCD. She subsequently worked as a lecturer in UCD, and also held research associate posts at Cardiff Business School and UCD. Prior to entering academia, Anita spent several years working in the financial services sector and in telecommunications in New York, London and Ireland. Her research focuses on not-for-profit organisations, public-private partnerships and government agencies.

Anita joined KMS in 2009 as Lecturer in Management.
